Initial Results

Increased knowledge of the processes which govern the transport of solids in sewers is necessary in order to develop more reliable and applicable sediment transport models for sewer systems. Proper validation of these are essential. For that purpose thorough field measurements are imperative. This paper renders initial results obtained in an ongoing case study of a Danish combined sewer system in Frejlev, a small town southwest of Aalborg, Denmark. Field data are presented concerning estimation of the sediment transport during dry weather. Finally, considerations on how to approach numerical modelling is made based on numerical simulations using MOUSE TRAP (DHI 1993).

AbstractErosion rates of wind turbine blades are not constant, and they depend on many external factors including meteorological differences relating to global weather patterns. In order to track the degradation of the turbine blades, it is important to analyse the distribution and change in weather conditions across the country. This case study addresses rainfall in Western Europe using the UK and Ireland data to create a relationship between the erosion rate of wind turbine blades and rainfall for both countries. In order to match the appropriate erosion data to the meteorological data, 2 months of the annual rainfall were chosen, and the differences were analysed. The month of highest rain, January and month of least rain, May were selected for the study. The two variables were then combined with other data including hailstorm events and locations of wind turbine farms to create a general overview of erosion with relation to wind turbine blades.

Elegantly poised over the Mobile River, the twin pylons and the semi-harped cable stays of the Cochrane Bridge subtly complement the vast and undulating landscape of the Mobile Bay as the bridge carries US Route 90 over the Mobile River in Alabama. In February 1998, light rain drizzled on the bridge, and a weather station nearby recorded wind speeds of about 48 km/h (30 mph). Under these seemingly mild weather conditions, the normally immobile cable stays started to vibrate, and within moments, these nascent vibrations reached amplitudes of more than 1.2 m (4 ft). Alarmed by this event, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) took immediate action to ensure the continued safety and serviceability of the bridge. A team of consultants was selected by ALDOT to investigate mitigation measures for the large-amplitude cable-stay vibrations. The fast-tracked comprehensive program planned and implemented to inspect, test, document, and evaluate the effects of the large-amplitude vibrations and the recommendation of retrofit measures that would limit future occurrences of such cable-stay vibrations on the Cochrane Bridge are described in detail.

Dew point cooling (DPC) is a novel indirect evaporative cooling concept capable of delivering air temperatures approaching the dew point. Coupling this technology with CO2 refrigeration is well suited to minimising transcritical operation when the coefficient of performance (COP) is dramatically reduced in hot climates. A substantial experimental program was conducted to characterise this combination by testing a 20 kW CO2 refrigeration system subject to ambient temperatures above 40 °C. It was demonstrated that DPC operation not only avoided transcritical operation during such weather conditions, but also increased the COP by up to 140% compared to the conventional system. The combination of these technologies was successfully mathematically modelled, from which the optimum condenser inlet air temperature was identified for each condenser temperature. Using this optimum condition, it was possible to maximise the COP for a range of conditions applicable to the psychometric chart. An annual case study for Adelaide, Australia was conducted which demonstrated that optimally coupling DPC with CO2 refrigeration can reduce the annual energy consumption and peak demand by 16% and 47%, respectively, compared to a conventional CO2 booster system. Furthermore, the number of hours of transcritical operation was reduced from 3278 to 27.

The preallocation of emergency resources is a mechanism increasing preparedness for uncertain traffic accidents under different weather conditions. This paper introduces the concept of accident probability of black spots and an improved accident frequency method to identify accident black spots and obtain the accident probability. At the same time, we propose a three-stage random regret-minimization (RRM) model to minimize the regret value of the attribute of overall response time, cost, and demand, which allocates limited emergency resources to more likely to happen accident spots. Due to the computational complexity of our model, a genetic algorithm is developed to solve a large-scale instance of the problem. A case study focuses on three-year rainy accidents’ data in Weifang, Linyi, and Rizhao of China to test the correctness and validity of the application of the model.

Selecting a riser concept for FPSOs stationed in deep water has posed challenges, due to the high hydrostatic pressure and large vessel payload. One of the major factors governing the riser concept selection for deepwater FPSOs is the geographical location and weather conditions prevalent in the region. For example, the free hanging flexible riser has been mostly used in the moderate environments of offshore Brazil, while concepts like the SCR and Hybrid Riser Tower (HRT) are dominant in the calm weather conditions of the West of Africa (WoA). Selecting a riser concept for an FPSO stationed in harsh weather conditions like those of the Northern Norwegian Sea is a daunting task. This is due to the large vessel offsets and dynamics, which are directly transferred along the riser’s length to its base, thereby causing considerable fatigue damage to the riser. The main aim of this paper is to recommend a suitable riser concept, which may be hooked to an internal turret moored FPSO stationed in water of 1500m depth and in the harsh environmental conditions of the Northern Norwegian Sea. The recommendations are based on the literature review and the case study performed in the manuscript. On the basis of the literature review, a lazy wave configuration of flexible riser and Steel Lazy Wave Riser (SLWR) has been considered as a viable riser concept. Thereafter, a case study is performed to compare the two riser concepts, on the basis of vessel payload, fabrication cost and installation cost.
