SummaryAs a corollary to our previous studies with bovine prothrombin, we have initiated a study of human prothrombin complex. This product has been isolated in crystalline form as a barium glycoprotein interaction product. Product yields were reduced compared to bovine product due to the increased solubility of the barium glycoprotein interaction product. On occasion the crystalline complex exhibited good yields. The specific activity of the crystalline complex was 1851 Iowa u/mg. Further purification of human prothrombin complex was made by removal of barium and by chromatography on Sephadex G-100 gels. The final product evidenced multiple procoagulant activities (II, VII, IX and X). The monomeric molecular weight determined by sedimentation equilibrium in a solvent of 6 M guanidine-HCl and 0.5% mercaptoethanol was 70,191 ± 3,057 and was homogeneous with respect to molecular weight. This product was characterized in regard to physical constants and chemical composition. In general, the molecular properties of human prothrombin complex are very similar to the comparable bovine product. In some preparations a reversible proteolytic enzyme inhibitor (p-aminophenylarsonic acid) was employed in the ultrafiltration step of the purification scheme to inhibit protein degradation.

Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir is a reservoir of enormous natural resources including the wealth of medicinal plants. The present paper deals with 12 medicinal plant species belonging to 8 genera of angiosperms used on pneumonia in cattle such as cows, sheep, goats and buffaloes in different areas of Poonch district. Due to poverty and nonavailability of modern health care facilities, the indigenous people of the area partially or fully depend on surrounding medicinal plants to cure the different ailments of their cattles. Further research on modern scientific line is necessary to improve their efficacy, safety and validation of the traditional knowledge.

Background The complete cytogenetic and immunophenotyping data in children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in Jammu and Kashmir is scarce. To bridge this knowledge gap the present study proposes to evaluate the immunophenotype and cytogenetic profile of pediatric ALL patients treated in our hospital. Material and methods This hospital-based observational study was conducted on 180 pediatric patients aged between 1  to 18 years who had visited the Paediatric unit of the  Department of Medical Oncology at Sher-I -Kashmir Institute of Medical Science, Srinagar ,Jammu and Kashmir between the January 2015 to December 2019. Result Among the study participants, 57.8% were male and 42.2% were female with a mean age of 9.24 years and median of 8 Years. Among the participants, 57.2% were below 10 years of age and 42.8% were above 10years of age. CNS disease was reported in 7.8%  of the study participants.  63.3% patients  had a TLC count of less than 20000. Immunophenotyping data revealed pre-B ALL in 77.8% of children. Cytogenetic study was conducted on 153 patients among them 74.4% had a normal karyotype, 7.2% s had hyperdiploidy and 3.3% had hypodiploidy. The FISH analysis showed that 23.3% of study participants were positive for the TEL-AML study, 11.1% were positive for BCR-ABL analysis and 4.4% of participants were positive for MLL gene analysis. The overall survival in the study population was 78.9% among the study participants. Only the MLL gene rearrangement analysis showed a statistically significant correlation with the survival analysis (P<0.5). Conclusion In summary, the present study reported the complete cytogenetic and immunophenotyping profile of the children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Jammu and Kashmir.

The practice of placing deprived children having least or no emotional and material resources, in orphanages has since long been prevailing in socio -economically poor Asian countries. A sample of 30 children residing in orphanage in district Anantnag in the age group of 13-18 years was selected for the present study. Most of the children were found socially and psychologically disturbed. As per Indian Academy Paediatrics (IAP) classification with respect to weight for age the condition was not bad that as approximately 67% percent of the children were found to be normal. In the same way height for age as per Waterloo’s classification shown that more than half of the children were normal. On clinical examination approximately 47% of children were normal, while as rest were suffering from dispigmentation of hair, moon face, xerosis of skin cheilosis, magenta tongue, spongy bleeding gums, oedema, conjuctival xerosis, and mottled dental enamel. The findings indicated that nutritional intake was deficient for all nutrients when compared to, Recommended Daily Allowances Chart (RDA) for all age groups which may be linked to poor planning of menus in orphanages.
