Lactobacillus acidophilus exerted antagonistic actions on growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, and Clostridium perfringens when grown with each in associative cultures. S. aureus and C. perfringens were more sensitive to the inhibition than were S. typhimurium and E. coli. The amount of the antagonism produced varied among strains of L. acidophilus and could not be directly related to amounts of acid produced; hydrogen peroxide produced by the lactobacilli appeared to be partially responsible for the antagonistic interaction. The inhibitory effect was produced also under anaerobic conditions in a pre-reduced medium.

Background. The suppression ofHelicobacter pylori(H. pylori) decreasesH. pylori-related diseases. The probiotics have an inhibitory effect onH. pylori.Aim. We investigated the effects of long-term use of yogurt onH. pyloribased on Mongolian gerbils’ model.Materials and Methods. Yogurt (containing a supplement ofLactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, etc.) was used. Forty-six gerbils were divided into five groups. All groups were inoculated withH. pylorifor 5 to 8 weeks. The yogurt was given as follows: Group (Gr.) A: from 1st to 4th week; Gr. B from 5th to 8th week; Gr. C: from 17th week to sacrifice; Gr. D: from 5th week to sacrifice. Gerbils were sacrificed on the 52nd week. Histology was evaluated according to the Sydney system.Results. The positive rates ofH. pyloriwere 60% (Gr. A), 75% (Gr. B), 67% (Gr. C), 44% (Gr. D), and 100% (Gr. E). Gr. D showed lower inflammatory score. Only Gr. E (60%) had intestinal metaplasia. Gr. D showed higher IL-10 and lower TNF-αexpression than Gr. E.Conclusion.Long-term intake of yogurt could decreaseH. pyloriinfection. The long-term use of yogurt would be an alternative strategy to manageH. pyloriinfection.

SummaryWe characterized the thromboxane A2/prostaglandin H2 receptors in porcine coronary artery. The binding of [3H]SQ 29,548, a thromboxane A2 antagonist, to coronary arterial membranes was saturable and displaceable. Scatchard analysis of equilibrium binding showed a single class of high affinity binding sites with a dissociation constant of 18.5 ±1.0 nM and the maximum binding of 80.7 ± 5.2 fmol/mg protein. [3H]SQ 29,548 binding was concentration-dependently inhibited by thromboxane A2 antagonists such as SQ 29,548, BM13505 and BM13177 or the thromboxane A2 agonists such as U46619 and U44069. KW-3635, a novel dibenzoxepin derivative, concentration-dependently inhibited the [3H]SQ 29,548 binding to thromboxane A2/prosta-glandin H2 receptors in coronary artery with an inhibition constant of 6.0 ± 0.69 nM (mean ± S.E.M.).

Abstract Objective This study was conducted to isolate and characterize lytic bacteriophages for pathogenic Escherichia coli from chicken and beef offal, and analyze their capability as biocontrol for several foodborne pathogens. Methods done in this research are bacteriophage isolation, purification, titer determination, application, determination of host range and minimum multiplicity of infection (miMOI), and bacteriophage morphology. Results Six bacteriophages successfully isolated from chicken and beef offal using EPEC and EHEC as host strain. Bacteriophage titers observed between 109 and 1010 PFU mL−1. CS EPEC and BL EHEC bacteriophage showed high efficiency in reduction of EPEC or EHEC contamination in meat about 99.20% and 99.04%. The lowest miMOI was 0.01 showed by CS EPEC bacteriophage. CI EPEC and BL EPEC bacteriophage suspected as Myoviridae family based on its micrograph from Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Refers to their activity, bacteriophages isolated in this study have a great potential to be used as biocontrol against several foodborne pathogens.
