AbstractAmino acid epimeric (aIle/Ile) values from terrestrial molluscs are used to define and correlate three aminozones in loess sequences exposed across the central Mississippi Valley, in Arkansas and Tennessee. Three superposed aminozones are defined at Wittsburg quarry, Arkansas, primarily using aIle/Ile values from total hydrolysates of the gastropod genus Hendersonia: Peoria Loess (aIle/Ile = 0.07 ± 0.01), Roxana Silt (0.14 ± 0.02), and a third loess (0.28 ± 0.06). Loess units at Wittsburg quarry can be correlated on lithologic characteristics eastward across the Mississippi Valley to the Old River section, near Memphis, Tennessee; however, only one loess unit is fossil-bearing (Peoria Loess, aIle/Ile = 0.05) at that section. Radiocarbon analyses of charcoal from the upper Roxana Silt (ca. 26,000 to 29,000 yr old) and mollusc shell carbonate from the basal Roxana Silt (ca. 39,000 yr old) are used to calibrate amino acid epimeric data for the central Mississippi Valley. These data, applied to the apparent parabolic kinetic model of R. M. Mitterer and N. Kriausakul (1989, Quaternary Science Reviews 8, 353-357), suggest an Illinoian (>120,000 yr) age for the third loess in the central Mississippi Valley that is correlative with part of the Loveland Loess in Illinois and Iowa.

Abstract. The potential of cultural heritage especially prehistoric sites along the karst hills on Rote island has significant value in the context of understanding and knowledge about archeology in East Nusa Tenggara. Cave sites in Rote island were started to be inhabited since the late Pleistocene and early Holocene, based on the presence of human settlement traces found in the caves and niches. Another historical evidence was a bronze axe which showed that Rote Island was a strategic region on Paleometalic era. The fragments of potteries, flakes, animal bones, dan mollusc shells found in the area sprang some questions if this area was used only as a settlement or had any other purposes. The aim of this research is to reveal the archaeological resources owned by the island, along with its geological condition. The method applied in this study is using field observation (survey) followed by excavation on prehistory sites that represent Rote Ndao human settlements. Numerous lithic artifacts were gathered for reasearch data, such as flakes, pottery, and mollusc shell and bone deposits. These data about prehistoric karst in Rote Ndao island have important value to reveal the migration path, particularly its geographic position as the foremost island and borderline region between East Timor and Australia.

AbstractThe radiocarbon ages of mollusc shells from the Bogenfels Pan on the hyper arid southern coast of Namibia provide constraints on the Holocene evolution of sea level and in particular, the mid-Holocene highstand. The Bogenfels Pan was flooded to depths of 3 m above mean sea level (amsl) to form a large subtidal lagoon from 7300 to 6500 calibrated radiocarbon years before present (cal yr BP). The mollusc assemblage of the wave sheltered lagoon includes Nassarius plicatellus, Lutraria lutraria, and the bivalves Solen capensis and Gastrana matadoa, both of which no longer live along the wave-dominated southern Namibian coast. The radiocarbon ages of mollusc shell from a gravely beach deposit exposed in a diamond exploration trench indicate that sea level fell to near or 1 m below its present-day position between 6500 and 4900 cal yr BP. The rapid emergence of the pan between 6500 and 4900 cal yr BP exceeds that predicted by glacio-isostatic models and may indicate a 3-m eustatic lowering of sea level. The beach deposits at Bogenfels indicate that sea level rose to 1 m amsl between 4800 and 4600 cal yr BP and then fell briefly between 4600 and 4200 cal yr BP before returning to 1 m amsl. Since 4200 cal yr BP sea level has remained within one meter of the present-day level and the beach at Bogenfels has prograded seaward from the delayed arrival of sand by longshore drift from the Orange River. A 6200 cal yr BP coastal midden and a 600 cal yr BP midden 1.7 km from the coast indicate sporadic human utilization of the area. The results of this study are consistent with previous studies and help to refine the Holocene sea-level record for southern Africa.
