Abstract For SRAMs with high logic complexity, hard defects, design debug, and soft defects have to be tackled all at once early on in the technology development while innovative integration schemes in front-end of the line are being validated. This paper presents a case study of a high-complexity static random access memory (SRAM) used during a 32nm technology development phase. The case study addresses several novel and unrelated fail mechanisms on a product-like SRAM. Corrective actions were put in place for several process levels in the back-end of the line, the middle of the line, and the front-end of the line. These process changes were successfully verified by demonstrating a significant reduction of the Vmax and Vmin nest array block fallout, thus allowing the broader development team to continue improving random defectivity.

The drug development phase is one of the most time-consuming and expensive stages in the lifecycle of a drug. Marred by patent expirations, price regulations, complexities in disease conditions, life sciences companies are facing a daunting task to bring new molecular entities into the market. Digital health technologies are playing a critical role in addressing some of the challenges faced during drug development. In this chapter, the author talks about the challenges and key trends in the world of drug development, use of new digital health technologies, and the future of drug development. As an example, the author dives into a specific case study on the use of virtual assistants in clinical trials and the benefits of its usage on patients, healthcare professionals, and life sciences companies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of the entrepreneur in the knowledge transfer (KT) process of a start-up enterprise and the ways that role should change during the development phase to ensure mid-term business survival and growth. Design/methodology/approach An in-depth, qualitative case study of Birra Flea, an Italian Craft Brewery, is presented and analysed using Liyanage et al.’s (2009) framework to identify the key components of the KT process, including relevant knowledge, key actors, transfer steps and the criteria for assessing its effectiveness and success. Findings The entrepreneur played a fundamental and crucial role in the start-up process, acting as a selective and passionate broker for the KT process. As Birra Flea matures and moves into the development phase, the role of the entrepreneur as KT’s champion needs to be integrated and distributed throughout the organisation, with the entrepreneur serving as a performance controller. Research limitations/implications This study enriches the knowledge management literature by applying a framework designed to provide a general description of KT, with some modifications, to a single case study to demonstrate its effectiveness in differentiating types of knowledge and outlining how KT can be configured to support essential business functions in an SME. Practical implications The analysis systematises the KT mechanisms that govern the start-up phase of an award-winning SME, with suggestions for how to manage KT during the development phase. Seldom are practitioners given insight into the mechanics of a successful SME start-up; this analysis serves as a practical guide for those wishing to implement effective KT strategies to emulate Birra Flea’s success. Originality/value The world’s economy thrives on SMEs, yet many fail as start-ups before they even have a chance to reach the development phase, presenting a motivation to study the early stages of SMEs. This study addresses that gap with an in-depth theoretical analysis of successful, effective KT processes in an SME, along with practical implications to enhance the knowledge, experience and skills of the actors that sustain these vital economic enterprises.

The increasing availability of mobile technologies is allowing users to interact seamlessly with a variety of content anytime, anywhere. One of these new Web 2.0 technologies, or technologies that aim at enhancing and creating opportunities for user collaboration, is podcasting (Wikipedia, 2008; O’Reilly, 2005), an online audio and video publishing tool. Podcasts are increasingly being used by language educators and learners, yet in the educational realm, podcasting is still in a development phase as teachers and students are just beginning to experiment with ways to best use the technology. Therefore, few guidelines exist in terms of researching this new technology, specifically with regards to language learning and teaching (Rosell-Aguilar, 2007). In this chapter we begin to close this gap by first providing an overview of podcasting. We then discuss the potential of podcasting to transform ways in which languages are learned. In doing so, we cite illustrative examples of podcasts currently being used by language educators and students, and suggest ways in which the effects of this technology on language learning processes may be researched in order to make pedagogically sound decisions about using podcasts for language learning and teaching. After presenting a case study investigating the use of podcasts at Iowa State University, we conclude with a reflection on the potential for podcasts to transform language learning and teaching.

The emerging use of object-relational databases with Web technologies has only recently begun. This chapter discusses a practical realization of an application using this technology. The aim is to show readers how to construct a full application from a design using object-oriented features up to the implementation. In this chapter, we highlight important or difficult stages with an emphasis on the mapping of object design into Oracle 8i and the use of stored procedures with the extended features for objects manipulation of Oracle 8i. This enables developers to construct professional Web applications achieving a high modularity and evolution capacity with an accelerated development phase in comparison with the traditional approach.

Abstract Turbomachineries are generally high-energy systems operating at supercritical speeds. Often, nonlinear effects and latent instabilities are encountered during its operation which significantly influence the synchronous and asynchronous response of the rotor. The cause may be fluid film bearing, seal rubs, shaft joints and couplings, varied acceleration rates. Accordingly one may have a varied response behavior viz. Sub and super-harmonic oscillations, jump phenomenon, limit cycles, etc. The development phase of an aero gas turbine engine faces such challenges and these problems have to be addressed to achieve a flight-worthy engine. The present paper discusses two case studies encountered during the development phase of an aero-engine in detail. First, is a case study of self-excited vibration caused due to oil inadvertently trapped in the internal cavity of hollow rotor and second, is the case demonstrating jump phenomena in case of a shaft with diaphragm couplings. The results acquired are well corroborated with the feedback and benchmarks. Wherever necessary, theoretical modeling has been resorted to validate the findings and get a better insight into the problem.

AbstractUsing interviews with former militants and previously unpublished documents, this article traces the genesis and internal dynamics of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (People's Revolutionary Army, ERP) in El Salvador during the early years of its existence (1970–6). This period was marked by the inability of the ERP to maintain internal coherence or any consensus on revolutionary strategy, which led to a series of splits and internal fights over control of the organisation. The evidence marshalled in this case study sheds new light on the origins of the armed Salvadorean Left and thus contributes to a wider understanding of the processes of formation and internal dynamics of armed left-wing groups that emerged from the 1960s onwards in Latin America.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.
