Multiple pre-Wisconsinan glaciations along the northwestern edge of the Allegheny Plateau in Ohio and Pennsylvania

Stratigraphic studies of the glacial geology of the northwestern margin of the Allegheny Plateau of northeastern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania include evidence for multiple pre-Wisconsinan glaciations. Near the former eastern margin of the Scioto lobe at Mount Gilead, Ohio, Millbrook, Gahanna, and Chesterville tills have an inferred Illinoian age based on thermoluminescence ages of 146 000 ± 25 000 and 124 000 ± 16 000 BP from an overlying silt interpreted as loess. Northampton Till overlies Millbrook Till of the Killbuck lobe and its correlative Mogadore Till of the Cuyahoga lobe, but does not overlie the correlative Titusville Till of the Grand River lobe. There are signficant differences in carbonate contents among these tills. Millbrook Till and its equivalents contain more kaolinite than other tills, and the Northampton Till contains more clay. Millbrook Till and its correlatives represent the most extensive Illinoian glaciation of the plateau, whereas the other Illinoian tills were deposited by ice that flowed a shorter distance onto the Allegheny Plateau. Butler, Mapledale, and Slippery Rock tills, formerly assigned to an Illinoian glaciation, are pre-Illinoian in age. Scarcity of materials for the dating and the lack of recognizable paleosols separating the tills from Wisconsinan deposits inhibits the reliability of the chronological classification of these tills.

The systematic investigation of the geology of Greenland for the State was continued in 1985 by the Geological Survey of Greenland (GGU). The investigations encompassed basic research and geological mapping as well as investigations in applied disciplines. Field work, mainly in the months of June, July and August, was carried out by seventy-five scientists and technicians, half of whom belong to the Survey's staff. In addition to the GGU parties several groups from other institutions worked in close collaboration with GGU. The areas of field activity reported on in 1985 are indicated on fig. 1. During 1985 the Survey was partly reorganised, and it is now built up of six main units: Department of Stratigraphy and Structural Geology, Department of Precambrian Geology, Department of Geochemistry, Department of Mineral Resources, Department of Petroleum Geology and Department of Glaciology and Glacial Geology. The administration, computing facilities and editorial staff are directly responsible to the Director.

A review of the post-glacial geology and geomorphology of the Severn Estuary provides a context for the description and evaluation of eight sites on the margins of the Severn upstream of the Rivers Avon and Wye where Romano-British occupation debris has been recovered. This evidence provides further confirmation of the extent of the reclamation and settlement of the wetlands of the Severn during the Roman period. In addition, all sites produced clear evidence of ironmaking, employing Forest of Dean ore, and one site produced indications of glassworking. In conjunction with a comparative study of the pottery assemblages from riverside and inland sites, the role of the river as a trade route is reviewed.
