AbstractThe relationship between vitamin D levels and testicular hormonal function in men has not been clearly established. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between deficiency/insufficiency levels of 25(OH)D and luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), total (TT), free (FT), and bioavailable testosterone (BT), and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) in young, healthy men. We enrolled 176 healthy, active young men aged 18–35 years from a genetically homogenous population of Lower Silesia, Poland. Serum levels of 25(OH)D, LH, FSH, and TT were measured by electrochemiluminescence (ECLIA). FT levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). BT levels were calculated from TT, SHBG, and albumin. SHBG was measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay CLIA. We did not find any significant differences between the mean hormonal values (LH, FSH, TT, FT, BT, and SHBG) and the status of 25(OH)D level (deficient and insufficient). Based on our results, we concluded that there is no relationship between deficient and insufficient 25(OH)D concentration and androgen levels in young, healthy men.

  THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VITAMIN D SERUM LEVELS WITH QUALITY OF LIFE IN EPILEPSY PATIENTABSTRACTIntroduction: Epilepsy affects overall health status and decreases the life quality of epilepsy patient. Seizure frequency, seizure type, daily activity disorder, depression and anxiety also affect the quality of life epilepsy patient. Vitamin D is considered as a neurosteroid modulator of nerve excitability and seizure susceptibility. Studies of vitamin D direct role in epilepsy are limited. Nevertheless, some studies show the role of vitamin D as an anticonvulsant that reduces the incidence of seizures.Aim: To determine the correlation between vitamin D serum levels with quality of life in epilepsy patient.Method: A cross sectional observational study on people with epilepsy in neurology clinic at Dr. Soeselo Hospital, Slawi, Dr Kariadi Hospital, and Tugurejo Hospital, Semarang in July 2017-January 2018. The quality of life was assessed with Quality of Life in Epilepsy 31 (QOLIE-31). Vitamin D serum levels measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data were analyzed using Spearman test. Results were considered significant if p<0.05.Results: There was no correlation between vitamin D serum levels with quality of life in epilepsy. There was significant correlation between anxiety with quality of life and there were difference between age group with quality of life. Discussion: There was no correlation between serum vitamin D levels and  quality of life in epilepsy patient.Keywords: Epilepsy,quality of life epilepsy, vitamin DABSTRAKPendahuluan: Epilepsi mempengaruhi status kesehatan secara keseluruhan dan menurunkan kualitas hidup pasien epilepsi. Namun beberapa penelitian menunjukkan peran vitamin D sebagai antikonvulsan yang mengurangi kejadian bangkitan.Tujuan: Mengetahui hubungan kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup pada pasien epilepsi.Metode: Penelitian potong lintang terhadap pasien epilepsi yang berobat ke Poliklinik Saraf RSUD Dr. Soeselo, Slawi, RSUP Dr. Kariadi, Semarang, dan RS Tugurejo, Semarang pada bulan Juli 2017-Januari 2018. Kualitas hidup dinilai menggunakan kuesioner Quality of Life in Epilepsy 31 (QOLIE-31), pengukuran kadar vitamin D serum menggunakan metode enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data dianalisis dengan uji Spearman, hasil dianggap bermakna jika p<0,05.Hasil: Tidak didapatkan hubungan antara kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup serta domainnya pada pasien epilepsi. Didapatkan hubungan yang bermakna antara ansietas dengan kualitas hidup dan antara kelompok usia dengan kualitas hidup.Diskusi: Tidak terdapat hubungan bermakna antara kadar vitamin D serum dengan kualitas hidup pada pasien epilepsi.Kata kunci: Epilepsi, kualitas hidup, vitamin D

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is one of the most important epidemiological events in the past 100 years has become, the consequences for public health and economic systems around the world. Vitamin D is an important micronutrient that has been reported to improve immunity and protect against respiratory diseases. In this study, we intend to review articles that examine the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D. Methods: This is a review that uses articles from studies published in 2020 on the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D in databases such as; Web of Science, Science Direct, SID, Magiran, Google Scholar and PubMed. Keywords used included; serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, vitamin D, COVID-19, SARS-COV-2 and coronavirus 2. With this search, 32 articles were finally selected for this purpose and their results were reviewed Results: Of the 32 studies reviewed, only three showed no association between vitamin D levels in the blood and COVID-19 disease. Other studies had a relationship between the severity of the disease, mortality rate and length of hospital stay, in different age, gender and location groups. Conclusion: It seems that the level of vitamin D in the blood has a potential effect on COVID-19 disease. Checking the serum vitamin D levels and supplementation in people with hypovitaminosis D can be a good solution to reduce the complications and problems caused by COVID-19.

Background: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases that can lead to mortality, inability, and lower productivity levels. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between serum vitamin D level and cardiovascular risk factors and the severity of CAD after determining and eliminating the confounding effects of dietary patterns in male patients undergoing angiography. Methods: This descriptive-analytic study was carried out on 132 men undergoing angiography during 2017 and 2018. To this end, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and physical activity questionnaire (PAQ) were completed for the patients. Fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C and vitamin D levels were also investigated. Results: Serum vitamin D levels significantly decreased with an increase in CAD severity (p=0.001). Also, low serum levels led to the highest severity of CAD (p=0.005). However, there was no significant difference between patients with vitamin D deficiency with different degrees of CAD (p=0.084). Also, the highest percentage of individuals with normal serum levels of vitamin D was observed in the group without any blocked blood arteries (normal) (p=0.023). Conclusion: This study shows an inverse relationship between serum 25(OH) D level and the severity of CAD. Our data show that vitamin D plays an important role in preventing CAD. These findings could help design prospective studies and clinical trials on a wider scale to investigate the effects of vitamin D interventions in preventing the development of CAD.

Vitamin D affects both innate and adaptive immunity. Most of the effects of vitamin D on innate immunity are anti-inflammatory. In monocytes/macrophages, vitamin D suppresses the production of the inflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, and IL-8. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between 25(OH)D concentration and selected cytokines—IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β, which are hemogram parameters for professional football players. We enrolled 41 Polish premier league soccer players. The mean age, career duration, and VO2max were, respectively: 22.7 ± 5.3 years, 14.7 ± 4.5 years, and 55.8 ± 4.0 mL/kg/min. Serum levels of 25(OH)D were measured by electrochemiluminescence (ECLIA) using the Elecsys system (Roche, Switzerland). Serum levels of IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α were measured by ELISA (R&D Systems, Minneapolis). Blood count with smear was measured on a Sysmex XT-4000i analyzer (Sysmex Corporation, Japan). Our study showed decreased serum 25(OH)D levels in 78% of the professional players. We found a significant negative correlation between 25(OH)D levels and TNF-α and LYMPH (%). The results also demonstrated a statistically significant positive correlation between vitamin D levels and NEUTH (%), NEUTH (tys/µL), and EOS (tys/µL). Based on the results of our study, we concluded that football players from Poland are not protected against vitamin D insufficiency in winter months. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency may be associated with an increased pro-inflammatory risk in well-trained athletes.

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the serum vitamin D level and the severity of bronchiolitis in infants. Materials and Methods: The population of this descriptive-analytical study included all infants within the age range of 1 month to 24 months old with bronchiolitis hospitalized in Bandar Abbas children’s hospital in 2018-2019. According to the exclusion and inclusion criteria, patients were entered in the study and diagnosed with bronchiolitis by a pediatric infectious disease specialist. Then, their serum levels of vitamin D were measured as well. Results: Of the 85 patients, 62.4% and 37.6% were males and females, respectively. The mean serum level of vitamin D was 29.74±13.44 ng/mL. In addition, the mean age in groups with mild-, moderate-, and severe-intensity was 9.27±4.52 months, 5.12±3.95 months, and 3.16±1.16 months (P<0.001), respectively. Further, the Spearman’s correlation between age and serum vitamin D levels was r = 0.05 (P<0.001). Based on the results, there was a statistically significant difference between the mean age in the two study groups (P<0.001). Finally, a statistically significant association was found between the severity of bronchiolitis and vitamin D status (P=0.007). Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, more than half of the infants admitted to the diagnosis of bronchiolitis had insufficient serum levels of vitamin D. There was also a significant association between the severity of bronchiolitis and serum vitamin D levels.

It also has been shown that vitamin D deficiency affect the DAS28 and VAS score inversely. Therefore, we aim to assess the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and RA-related autoantibodies including Anti CCP and RF levels and also evaluate the association between these parameters and the severity of disease.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, RA patients over 16 years of age were enrolled. The severity of diseases was assessed via the DAS28 scoring system. Serum levels of 25(OH) vitamin D were determined by the ELISA method, along with other rheumatoid related laboratory evaluations including Anti CCP, RF and CRPResults: A total of 100 patients with a mean age of 45.27± 14.14 were included and evaluated; of them, 75% were female and 77% lived in the city. Most of the patients (66%) had moderate DAS28 levels; however, no substantial relationship was observed between DAS28 and vitamin D levels. A significant positive relation between serum 25(OH)D level and disease duration, as well as the level of education, was observed. There was also no significant correlation between RA-related autoantibodies and inflammatory serum marker with 25(OH)D.Conclusion: Due to vitamin deficiency in the majority of cases (73%) and the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and the duration of disease, it can be concluded that vitamin D levels should be checked in those patients.

Background: Pityriasis alba, is a common benign skin disease occurring predominantly among children, often on their face. Clinically, the spots of pityriasis alba are off-white in color, round with poorly defined margins that bear scanty fine scales on it. No specific cause of pityriasis alba has been identified . In this disease, the number of melanocytes declines and melanosomes reduce within melanocytes. Vitamin D exerts its effect via the vitamin D receptor on melanocytes, if intracellular Ca2+ level decreases, this leads to high levels of reduced thioredoxin this, in turn, inhibit tyrosinase activity with the inhibition of melanin synthesis. In addition, the apoptotic activity of melanocytes reduces by the active form of vitamin D. Aim: The study aimed to assess the status of vitamin D for patients with pityriasis alba. Materials and Methods: 44 patient diagnosed with pityriasis alba were enrolled and the second group of 44 controls was involved in our study. Serum levels of circulating 25 (OH) D were measured. Results: None of the cases had sufficient serum level; the level ranged between 8.1-27.3 ng/ml. The patients had lower circulating vitamin D levels than controls. Conclusion: Our findings in the present study are significant, but further studies with large samples are needed to correlate the extent and severity of pityriasis alba with vitamin D deficiency.

Aim. To evaluate the status of vitamin D in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and establish its associations with comorbidity, disease activity, and body composition components. Materials and methods. 86 women with RA (average age 58.18.5 years) were enrolled in the study. We analyzed the relationship of vitamin D levels with clinical and laboratory parameters and with the results of two-energy x-ray absorptiometry. MannWhitney or KruskalWallis, 2 and Spearman tests were performed using Statistica for Windows 10.0 (StatSoft Inc., USA). Results. Vitamin D level was 22.4 [17.8; 27.3] ng/ml: deficiency was detected in 33%, and insufficiency in 46% of women with RA. Only 41% of patients with low vitamin D levels received supplements of cholecalciferol, while only 9% in a sufficient dose. 25(OH)D level was significantly lower in RA patients with sarcopenia, obesity, high activity according to DAS28 and in those who did not receive vitamin D supplements. There werent differences in 25(OH)D levels among subgroups of patient according to age, fertility, BMD status, comorbidity index, RA duration, ESR and CRP levels, medical therapy performed. Conclusion. 79% of patients with RA had low levels of vitamin D, while less than half of them received additional cholecalciferol supplements. Low vitamin D levels in RA patients were associated with high disease activity, sarcopenia, and obesity.

Vitamin D deficiency is becoming endemic in many parts of the world.Several studies demonstrated a relationship between vitamin D deficiency, hypocalcemia and thyroid disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine the serum level of Vitamin D in healthy adult Libyan women and the status ofserum calcium and thyroid hormones. Serum vitamin D levels were measured in 174 healthy women who are classified in groups according to the age(Mean age 34±14 years). Our results revealed that vitamin D deficiency is very common among Libyan adult females because the mean of vitamin D was 13.4 ± 6.4 (n=174). Vitamin D deficiency was considered at serum levels lower than 20 ng/ml.In addition, we evaluated serum level ofcalcium and Thyroidfunction hormones (TSH, T3 and T4) in only60participants from 174 who are included in this study.It has been previously shown that individuals with low vitamin D levels have low thyroid functionbut our results here indicated that serum thyroid hormones and calcium analysis were lay within the normal rang in most of the participants. Therefore, we strongly recommend the screening for Vitamin D deficiency in all adult Libyan females and encourage the advisability of increasing vitamin D intake combined with following up its serum level to avoid over dose.
