Based on the challenge-hindrance stressors framework and regulatory focus theory, this study explored the mediating role of promotion focus between challenge stressors and employee creativity, and the mediating role of prevention focus between hindrance stressors and creativity. In addition, we further explored the moderating role of proactive personality in this model. In the end, we discuss implications and limitations of our argument for theory and practices.

Purpose To avoid (costly) conflict, it is imperative to uncover when negotiators cooperate. The previous study has shown that negotiators’ cooperative or competitive behavior is oftentimes guided by cues about their counterpart; information about his/her traits or behavior. Using regulatory focus theory, this paper aims to investigate when this is likely to happen. The authors hypothesize and test that because prevention focus (rather than promotion focus) is associated with concerns for safety and concrete surroundings, it strengthens the impact of counterpart cues. Design/methodology/approach The authors used two scenario studies and one behavioral negotiation study to test the general hypothesis. The authors measured or manipulated participants’ regulatory focus, manipulated counterpart cues by varying the information negotiators received about their counterpart’s traits and behavior, and measured participants’ cooperative or competitive concession making behavior. Findings Results from the studies confirmed that under prevention focus, negotiators’ cooperative behavior depended on whether they received cooperative versus competitive counterpart cues more than under promotion focus. Furthermore, results also showed that under prevention focus, negotiators’ behavior was relatively unaffected by their own social motivation – i.e. their personal goal to obtain favorable outcomes for oneself or for both negotiation parties. Originality/value By showing that regulatory focus determines when counterpart cues affect negotiation behavior, this paper furthers the understanding of when contextual factors affect negotiators' behavior. In addition, it contributes to the understanding of the complex effects of prevention focus in interpersonal behavior.

We explored the impact of two types of regulatory focus on creativity among 330 college students in China, along with the mediating role of boundaryless mindset and moderating role of stressful life events. A three-wave survey showed that both promotion focus and prevention focus positively predicted the creativity in college students, but the positive effect of promotion focus on the creativity in college students was greater than that of prevention focus; boundaryless mindset mediated the relationship between regulatory focus and creativity; stressful life events moderated the direct effect that promotion focus has on boundaryless mindset, and it also moderated the indirect effect that promotion focus has on creativity via boundaryless mindset. These results extend the existing research on creativity and establish a new mediating mechanism and boundary conditions between regulatory focus and creativity in college students. Finally, we hope to provide a reference for innovation education.

This study examines the relationship between entrepreneurial passion and organizational innovation in new ventures. We also investigate the moderating role of entrepreneurs’ cognition, namely regulatory focus, in the relationship between entrepreneurial passion and organizational innovation. Findings from data collected from 141 Chinese new ventures indicated that entrepreneurial passion is positively related to organizational innovation. Moreover, the regulatory focus of entrepreneurs moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial passion and organizational innovation, such that the relationship is stronger under high promotion focus or low prevention focus. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

There exists substantial literature describing how the two motivational systems of promotion and prevention (Regulatory Focus Theory; Higgins, 1997) influence behaviour. However, the specific cognitive correlates of regulatory focus remain unclear. Furthermore, how regulatory focus may influence the course of cognitive aging is unknown. Experiment 1 compared healthy older and younger adults on Higgins' measure of self-discrepancy and explored relationships with cognition. Experiment 2 compared younger adults induced into either a promotion or prevention focus relative to a no-induction control condition on measures of cognition. The results from Experiment 1 revealed that while the magnitude of self-discrepancy remains constant across the lifespan, the evaluation and content of self goals changes with age. The results from Experiment 2 suggest that the effects of the regulatory focus induction are limited but specific to particular aspects of memory and perception. Overall, these findings may contribute to our understanding of aging and motivated cognition.

Enriching the limited knowledge and research on linkage between strategic management, human resource and innovation in developing economies, this paper focuses on the role of participative strategic planning (PSP), promotion focus and flexible role orientation (FRO) on innovation capability in Iranian SMEs. Furthermore, the moderating role of ideation strategy will be investigated. A total of 252 samples were collected from Iranian SME managers and employees in the different sectors through a quantitative method. A questionnaire was used for the data collection, and AMOS-SEM was employed for data analysis. The results indicate that PSP has a positive and significant impact on promotion focus, FRO, and innovation capability. In addition, it is shown that ideation strategy moderates the impact of promotion focus and FRO on innovation capabilities. Given the positive impact of PSP on promotion focus, FRO, and innovation capability, it is suggested that SME’s top managers use staff and managers with different levels in strategic planning processes and long-term organisation goals.
