In recent years containerization has revolutionized cloud environments, providing a secure, lightweight, standardized way to package and execute software. Solutions such as Kubernetes enable orchestration of containers in a cluster, including for the purpose of job scheduling. Kubernetes is becoming a de facto standard, available at all major cloud computing providers, and is gaining increased attention from some WLCG sites. In particular, CERN IT has integrated Kubernetes into their cloud infrastructure by providing an interface to instantly create Kubernetes clusters, and the University of Victoria is pursuing an infrastructure-as-code approach to deploying Kubernetes as a flexible and resilient platform for running services and delivering resources. The ATLAS experiment at the LHC has partnered with CERN IT and the University of Victoria to explore and demonstrate the feasibility of running an ATLAS computing site directly on Kubernetes, replacing all grid computing services. We have interfaced ATLAS’ workload submission engine PanDA with Kubernetes, to directly submit and monitor the status of containerized jobs. We describe the integration and deployment details, and focus on the lessons learned from running a wide variety of ATLAS production payloads on Kubernetes using clusters of several thousand cores at CERN and the Tier 2 computing site in Victoria.

With increase of information sharing over the internet or intranet, we require techniques to increase the availability of shared resource over large number of users trying to access the resources at the same time. Many techniques are being proposed to make access easy and more secure in distributed environment. Information retrieval plays an important to serve the most reliant data in least waiting, this chapter discuses all such techniques for information retrieval and sharing over the cloud infrastructure. Cloud Computing services provide better performance in terms of resource sharing and resource access with high reliability and scalability under high load.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on the value creation potential of cloud computing in inter-firm partnerships. It examines how cloud-based IT infrastructure capabilities in flexibility and integration contribute to partnering agility and, consequently, firm performance. This study also introduces business lifecycle and market turbulence as internal and external context variables, respectively, to investigate the different roles of cloud computing in value creation. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was used to collect data from 184 client firms of the largest cloud computing services provider in China (Alibaba Cloud). The theoretical model was tested using PLS analysis. Findings – Cloud infrastructure (CI) flexibility has a positive effect on partnering agility, while the effect of CI integration on partnering agility is moderated by business lifecycle and market turbulence. Research limitations/implications – The surveyed firms are all Alibaba Cloud clients, which may limit the generalization of the findings. Practical implications – The study suggests that besides the cost benefits, the value creation aspect of cloud computing should also be emphasized in research and practice. The study provides a new perspective to understand the business value of cloud computing in inter-firm partnerships. Originality/value – The study suggests that the flexibility-related and integration-related features of cloud computing can create value for firms by facilitating inter-firm collaboration in exploiting business opportunities.


The proliferation of Cloud Computing has opened new and attractive offerings for consumers. Cloud Service Providers promote and market packages of cloud computing services that cater to diverse opportunities and user applications. While this has obvious advantages, there are certain factors that are a cause for concern. Monitoring the underlying infrastructure that supports the entire fabric of cloud computing is an aspect that requires a great deal of attention. The aspect of monitoring takes on a great deal of significance when performance and robustness of cloud service on offer is taken into consideration. Although research has been conducted into various cloud computing monitoring techniques, there is scope and room yet for an integrated cloud monitoring solution that can fulfill the requirements of cloud administrators to ensure optimal performance of the underlying infrastructure of a cloud computing network. In this paper, we propose a unified monitoring model that is essentially a composite framework involving hardware and network layers. Studies conducted during our experiments suggest that our unified cloud monitoring approach can significantly aid in reducing overall carbon emissions while helping meeting compliance and audit norms by ensuring that the underlying cloud infrastructure is monitored closely

The number of users of cloud computing services is drastically increasing, thereby increasing the size of data centers across the globe. In virtue of it, the consumption of power and energy is a major concern for system designers and developers. Their goal is now to develop power and energy-efficient products at the same time maintaining the quality and cost of products and services. For managing the power and efficiency, several aspects are taken into consideration in cloud computing paradigm. Load balancing, task scheduling, task migration, resource allocation are some of the techniques, which need to be efficiently employed to minimize the energy consumption. This chapter represents the detailed survey of the existing solutions and approaches for energy-efficient load balancing algorithms used in cloud environments. The research challenges as well as future research directions are also discussed in this chapter.

This study investigated the challenges and prospects of creating and storing records in the cloud by Zimbabwe Open University in Zimbabwe. Like other universities in Zimbabwe, the university adopted Education 5.0 advocated by the government in 2019. Consequently, the university came up with innovation hubs and industrial parks that became centres for records creation. Keeping all records in the computer without appropriate backups and servers has consequences such as losing vital records. Organisations around the world use cloud computing increasingly to address records storage and disposal. Adoption of cloud computing services carries with it cost implications, and legal and ownership challenges as the virtualised environments are hosted and managed by third parties. The objective of this study was to examine the management, operational, legal and technical issues surrounding the storage of records in the cloud, and the implications for their trustworthiness and authenticity. The study adopted a qualitative research design and drew data from interviews with key participants. Qualitative data were organised into broad themes and the content reported in narrative form. The study found that Zimbabwe Open University is not using cloud computing services effectively and is in the trial phase of cloud computing. It further found that there was a lack of collaboration between the information and communication technology and the records management units as the university decided to move to the cloud on a full-scale basis. The study recommends that the university should first address the management, operational, legal and technical issues surrounding the storage of records in the cloud before implementing the complete use of the cloud. The study deepens the understanding of cloud computing in the management of records at the university, and other state universities in Zimbabwe can use this study to deal with the management of records in the cloud.

Cloud computing is a new technology recently being developed seriously. Scheduling is an essential issue in the area of cloud computing. There is an extensive literature concerning scheduling in the area of distributed systems. Some of them are applicable for cloud computing. Traditional scheduling methods are unable to provide scheduling in cloud environments. According to a simple classification, scheduling algorithms in the cloud environment are divided into two main groups: batch mode and online heuristics scheduling. This paper focuses on the trust of cloud-based scheduling algorithms. According to the literature, the existing algorithm examinee latest algorithm is related to an algorithm trying to optimize scheduling using the Trust method. The existing algorithm has some drawbacks, including the additional overhead and inaccessibility to the past transaction data. This paper is an improvement of the trust-based algorithm to reduce the drawbacks of the existing algorithms. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can execute better than the previous method. The efficiency of this method depends on the number of nods and tasks. The more trust in the number of nods and tasks, the more the performance improves when the time cost increases

In the current scenario, the considerable necessity of industry is to concatenate heterogeneous hardware components to the cloud based online access system for monitoring and identifying their behavior over a period. Every cloud computing is provided with a secured login credentials for limited access. The main objective of this paper is to record and transmit the readings of the instruments (Solar Charge Controller) to IoT which deals with establishing the suitable Web application on the cloud for Data logging and diagnostics. Using microcontroller information can be transmitted wirelessly with the help of Ethernet or Wi-Fi module. Some of the electrical devices can direct certain parameters to the microcontroller which are handled with the help of Ethernet or Wi-Fi module and connected to the cloud based system which may lessen the overall memory squandered. An attempt has been made to know the status of devices through PC/Laptop/Mobile/Tablet at any place while connected to cloud computing services.
