The manufacturing industry is always faced with global challenges such as cost effectiveness, lead time, quality, and safety. Lean as a concept of continuous improvement can be a solution in solving the challenge. PT. Compotec International is one of the companies faced with the problem. Basically, the company has implemented lean concept in its production process, but the lack of understanding and commitment of the company in its implementation still leads to the emergence of waste in the production process. Therefore a comprehensive measurement is needed to assess company performance from several dimensions such as time effectiveness, quality, process, cost, human resources, delivery, customer, and inventory. In the previous lean assessment tools research, safety issues that became the basis of production considerations before making improvements have not been taken yet into account. Therefore it is necessary to integrate waste based indicators related to poor safety. Measurements are done qualitatively and quantitatively using aggregate scoring and fuzzy approaches. From the measurement result and then weighted with Brown-Gibson method to get the value of leanness. then the results of these calculations are combined to be visualized in the form of lean radar chart. In this research, it is hoped that the development of new lean assessment can measure lean performance more comprehensively.

This article is based on a case study of one shipyard’s effort to make the flow of engineering drawings feeding into its production process more reliable. To construct a ship, detailed drawings of every part of the product is an essential input. For these drawings to be reliable, they must include all relevant information, they have to follow each other in a proper line of order, and they should be released according to production milestones. In the shipyard in this study, an analysis was initiated to explore the management of engineering drawing. The main findings show that the usability of ICT is limited for this purpose, and that to really make an effort in order for engineering drawings to be reliable, a more basic understanding of the interpersonal communication at work in a one-off project environment is fundamental.

Abstract The paper presents a case study of the practical use of BOST surveys to identify problems that are the most important in production process. The research object is company from electrical industry. It was made the identification and of areas geneating problems from the second Toyota’s management principle point of view. Analysis of the research results was presented in the form of tables, histograms, radar chart and some statistical tools. Some production workers of the company with the help of BOST questionnaire survey showed, which factors are the most important. The aim of the analysis is to present which factors are the most important by building the significance sequences of obtained results. The results obtained for the type of small and medium-sized enterprises overlap with the results of tests verified in other enterprises.

In advance, the lean concept was used and applicated for big manufacturing industry. However, the lean concept used widely for all kinds of industry in the world. The improvement practice as lean and JIT also used for small industry (SMEs) in any countries which have implemented lean. The SMEs which have implemented lean showed any improvement, as the increasing of efficiency and flexibility, clear of communication and close with the Customers so the response and feedback are quicker and the costs are lower. The lean assessment tools used to value the effectiveness and the efficiency from lean implementation in the certain industry. The development of lean assessment tool for SMEs done by considering the difference between SMEs characteristic with industry a big scale. Have been many studies development of lean assessment to measure lean implementation in manufacturing industry and service generally without considered the size of his industry. However there are just a few development of lean assessment tools study that specific to measure the implementation lean manufacturing on SMEs. Therefore, this study aims to collect and compare the dimensions and indicators of the Lean Assessment Tool from several countries that are suitable for use in manufacture SMEs in Indonesia.

The garment industry stands out as the second-largest employer in the manufacturing industry, but it is singled out for environmentally and socially unsustainable practices. In this study, managers of ten companies in Teresina (Piauí State, Brazil) were interviewed to investigate textile waste management methods and instruments and the difficulties and challenges found in management. Methodologically, it was used bibliographical, exploratory, documental and case study research. The research instruments were the questionnaire, direct observation and interview. Data were assessed through content analysis. The results show that part of the production-related waste is donated to manufacture rugs and fuxico, discarded for everyday collection. The conclusion we came across is that the clothing industry in Teresina lacks better management of its production process to generate less waste. When it is not possible to reuse it, dispose of it properly.

Women’s empowerment has been at the centre of research focus for many decades. Extant literature examined the process, outcome and various challenges. Some claimed substantial success, while others contradicted with evidence of failure. But the success remains a matter of debate due to lack of empirical evidence of actual empowerment of women around the world. The current study aimed to address this gap by taking a case study method. The study critically evaluates 20 cases carefully sampled to include representatives from the entire country of Bangladesh. The study demonstrates popular beliefs about microfinance often misguide even the borrowers and they start living in a fabricated feeling of empowerment, facing real challenges to achieve true empowerment in their lives. The impact of this finding is twofold; firstly there is a theoretical contribution, where the definition of women’s empowerment is proposed to be revisited considering findings from these cases. And lastly, the policy makers at governmental and non-governmental organisations, and multinational donor agencies need to revise their assessment tools for funding.
