After the announcement of quarantine due to Covid-19 on March 16, 2020, parents of children with disabilities were left without help from educational and health professionals, while changes in routine, work and financial restrictions, isolation, exacerbations of children’s mental disorders increased the level of parental anxiety, tension, fear and anger. Research on music therapy conducted by the world scientists demonstrated the effectiveness of applying receptive music therapy (RMT) methods to cope with stress, when listening to music is used as a tool that can change the client’s state and help to reveal one’s experiences. The aim of the article is to reveal, theoretically and empirically, possibilities of remote application of receptive music therapy for mothers raising children with developmental disorders. Tasks: 1) to present a model of remote application of receptive music therapy for coping with stress; 2) to examine the possibilities of independent application of the developed therapeutic instrument for client’s self-help. Problem question: how can mothers use the therapeutic tool and skills acquired during the receptive music therapy on their own during the Covid-19 quarantine? The mixed data collection methodology was chosen for the research: 1) in-depth, semi-structured interview (content analysis method); 2) Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaire; 3) Musical Life Panorama (MLP) biographical interview; 4) Audio recordings of music therapy sessions – qualitative narrative analysis; 5) Music Listening Diary (MLD). Fours subjects were selected on a voluntary participatory basis by forming a homogenous group according to a similar experience of raising children with disabilities. The research revealed that remote application of RMT improved the study participants’ ability to recognize stressful situations better, feelings, and reactions arising during them, and helped them to understand their emotions better. The clients learned to apply the therapeutic instrument independently in order to relieve a stressful situation, adverse reactions, or the emerging emotions. With the formation of the habit of listening to music more often, not only did the ability to relax, not get upset, calm down was strengthened, but tension decreased and the general emotional background in the family improved. The application of RMT increased clients’ ability to cope with stress and reduced the risk of recurring stressful situations. Study participants confirmed the suitability of RMT both in remote sessions and in self-application of the instrument for self-help after the therapy during the COVID-19 quarantine.

The article is dedicated to the assessment of the personal position of parents raising children with disabilities. Studying them becomes especially important if the family chooses inclusive education for their children. The article presents a comparative analysis of the personal positions of parents whose schoolchildren have mild or severe forms of developmental disorders. To obtain reliable data, a social portrait of the families participating in the study was compiled (the education of the parents, their occupation, the socioeconomic status of the family, etc.) was assessed. The value-semantic orientation of the parents, being one of the components of the personal position, was characterized. Their assessment was carried out according to such criteria as adequacy and balance (harmony). The following value-semantic orientation of the parents was revealed: adequate balanced, insufficiently adequate, unbalanced, inadequate. Depending on the identified orientation, recommendations were made for accompanying families raising children with disabilities in general educational organizations.

The paper presents the results of an empirical study of the viability, hardiness and life satisfaction index of parents raising children with disabilities in Khabarovsk city, Russian Federation. According to the results of the study, parents who raise children with disabilities show deteriorated performance on all tests. As a result of the analysis on the viability tests and the “life satisfaction index”, statistically significant differences were revealed between the two groups of the sample; on the hardiness test, such differences were shown only on one of the scales. It was found that viability for parents of children with disabilities is not a full resource. The study confirmed the key role of the indicator “meaningfulness of life” as a “vertical” factor of viability. According to the data obtained using the “Life satisfaction index” test, the most powerful influence on the value of the life satisfaction index of parents raising children with disabilities is provided by indicators of consistency between goals set and achieved and the general mood background. In addition, these indicators also strongly correlate with each other. The results of the study showed that both groups of parents who participated in the study demonstrated sufficient ability to withstand a stressful situation. Parents raising children with disabilities have a low value of the indicator “control” as an emotional and volitional element of the scale.

Introduction During the COVID-19 pandemic, children with neurodevelopmental disabilities could not attend their usual rehabilitation therapies, with a consequent reduced support of developmental process and risk of worsening of their clinical conditions. Methods We prospectively enrolled 14 children with developmental delay, who had already tried a personalised music therapy (Euterpe method). We included them in a 12-day programme of home-based music therapy. The children and their parents were investigated using the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children and the Parent Stress Index-Short Form. Results Fourteen children started the intervention, while only 12 children completed all the planned home sessions and assessments. We observed a significant improvement in children’s sleep quality and a reduction of parental distress. Discussion The significant improvements in parental distress and sleep quality must be considered important achievements for the quality of life of a child and their family. Home-based music therapy can provide a feasible approach to improving sleep and parent’s stress for children with developmental disorders.

In this qualitative study, we evaluated parents’ and facilitators’ experiences of the Group Stepping Stones Triple P (GSSTP) programme for parents of children with disabilities. The study was embedded in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of GSSTP and carried out in the Irish public health service. Eight parents and three psychologists participated in the study. We used a semi-structured interview schedule to collect data and conducted a thematic content analysis of interview transcripts to identify particularly useful and less helpful aspects of the programme and ways that its future delivery may be improved. We conducted separate analyses on parent and psychologist data. The main findings were that parents considered the GSSTP to have helped them develop better self-regulation and behaviour management skills, which contributed to improved family relations. Negative aspects of the programme included the use of dated videos, the volume of programme content, the attrition rate and the shortcomings of the programme in meeting the complex needs of vulnerable families. Improvement suggestions included increasing flexibility of manualised content, providing follow-up support to vulnerable parents, incentivizing parents to attend and updating videos.

The purpose of this study was to examine the opinions of school principals and teachers about the new implication process which teachers are being evaluated by school principals according to performance criteria. Phenomenological study design was chosen in this qualitative research. Participants were selected according to maximum variation sampling which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. Data were collected from 11 school principals and 14 teachers via semi-structured interview forms in Tokat city center. Data were analyzed according to descriptive analyzing technique. According to the results obtained in the study, participants stated that the purpose of current performance evaluation is the evaluation of teachers and to support their professional development. About the new application’s access to the purposes, while many of the teachers reported that the system could not achieve its goals, most of the school principals stated that the system would reach the goals with some shortcomings. Participants criticized the system for fast coming up and implementation. Participants stated that school principals were not qualified for this system. The most important strength of the system was defined as the teacher’s close awareness of the school principals. According to teachers’ views about the weaknesses of the system; the impact of conflicts or prejudices affecting school, school principals’ failure to take into account the criteria list, the existence of biased behaviors, the fact that principals were not educated in supervision, erroneous or incomplete practices in branch-specific evaluations, the deterioration of organizational peace. The majority of school principals reported that the applied system could contribute to the professional development of teachers, while the majority of teachers thought that the system would make a limited contribution. A two-day seminar was held with the school principals while training for teachers was not arranged by the Ministry of Education prior to the performance evaluation process. In the study, some suggestions were also made regarding the development of the current practice and the assessment of teacher performance in Turkey.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file.
