SummaryWe present two case reports concerning patients who had to undergone surgical treatment according tp the diagnosis of thrombophlebitis with insufficiency of the greater saphenous vein and putative encapsulated haematoma in the lower left leg area. During the operation we found tumours with urgent suspicion of malignancy. The histological examination revealed the diagnosis of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour which are extremely malignant, but very rare neoplasmas with unfavourable prognosis. Conclusion: Since both types of tumours are often located below the knee, phlebotomists and vascular surgeons should take them into account as differential diagnosis.

AbstractObjective:We report a case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour seen in our department.Method:We present case reports and a review of the world literature concerning malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour.Results:A 38-year-old Caucasian woman was diagnosed with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour of the infraorbital nerve. She underwent a wide enbloc resection followed by a course of radiotherapy. A five-year post-operative magnetic resonance imaging scan revealed no evidence of recurrence.Conclusion:Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours are rare in the head and neck. An awareness of their occurrence is important for early diagnosis. Management involves: accurate histological diagnosis; radiological imaging to define tumour extent and plan resection; wide surgical excision with histologically negative margins; reconstruction of the tissue defect; and post-operative radiotherapy.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) are rare, aggressive sarcomatous tumours of peripheral nerve sheaths which can arise from preexisting neurofibroma or de novo.Sporadic origin accounts for nearly half of all MPNST cases,while other cases occur in association with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).The most common site is nerve trunks of extremities like sciatic nerve. On literature search only four case reports of MPNST of radial nerve are published till date.We report a case of 50 years old lady presenting with a large,firm,ovoid swelling measuring 7 cm x 8 cm over her right arm with symptoms of neuropathy.The fine needle aspiration cytology report was a benign neurogenenic tumour. MRI reported as a radial nerve sheath tumour. Core biopsy shows features of neurofibroma(NF).She was subjected to treatment as a benign pathology but the final histopathological report was a low grade - malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a diverse group of neoplasms with about 60 subtypes arising from a variety of anatomical structures across all age groups. The diagnosis of STS can prove to be challenging as it mimics a variety of non malignant conditions. Here we present one such case of a sporadic MPNST which was operated on with the main differential diagnosis of a Pelvic Abscess. Hence though STS is rare in general population it should always be kept in mind in cases of doubtful and confusing presentations.

SummaryA modification of the fibrin slide method of Todd permitting a semiquantitative estimation of the fibrinolytic activity in tissue sections is described. By means of this technique, the authors have studied the fibrinolytic activity of the great saphenous vein and of superficial veins of the arm and leg in patients suffering from varices and in normal subjects. It was found that:1. Fibrinolytic activity is localized, in these vessels, mainly to the vasa vasorum of the adventitia. The media is moderately active. Intimal cells are active only when detached.2. The great saphenous vein is more active above than below the knee.3. The veins of the arm are definitely more active than the veins of the leg.4. The activator of plasminogen demonstrated in the sections by the fibrin slide method is a fairly stable enzyme still active after exposure to 60° C and resistent to moderate variations of pH.

AbstractThe aim of this report is to describe an unusual localization of nerve sheath tumour (NST), clinical presentation, imaging, surgical management, and outcome in a 2-year-old dog. A 2-year-old female American Staffordshire Terrier presented with nonambulatory paraparesis, thoracolumbar hyperaesthesia, hindlimb hyperreflexia, and mild muscle atrophy. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extradural mass at T7-T8, without vertebral lesions. Surgical treatment consisted in resection of the soft tissue mass through dorsal laminectomy. The dog was ambulatory within 24 hours and free of recurrence at 18 months postoperatively. Histopathologic and features of immunohistochemistry were consistent with NST. The NST of this report was similar to those described before, but exhibited unusual characteristics, such as being extradural, without extension into intervertebral foramina, and being located in an atypical region (T7-T8). Moreover, survival time and relapse-free interval are greater than previously reported for similar cases.
