Abstract Introduction Adenoid hypertrophy is a change in adenoid size that can lead to obstruction the Eustachian tube and become a risk factor for otitis media effusion (OME) in children. Standard objective examination of adenoid hypertrophy uses adenoid-nasopharyngeal ratio (A-N ratio) based on correct lateral skull radiography. Adenoid hypertrophy is one of the factors causing OME in children. There is still much debate about the association between A-N ratio and tympanogram width (Tw). Determining the association of A-N ratio and Tw in adenoid hypertrophy patients. Methods Participants performed a true lateral radiographic examination using Fujioka method to determine A-N ratio, and Tw to determine middle-ear pressure. The distance between examination of A-N ratio and tympanogram examination was at maximum of ~1 week. The association between A-N ratio and Tw in patients with adenoid hypertrophy used the Pearson correlation test. This research employed significance level p < 0.05. Results Most participants were aged between 6 and 10 years (38.10%), male patients (57.14%), and the symptom most participants complained of was snoring during sleep (38.10%). Most participants had A-N ratio of 0.53 to 0.70 (61.90%) with an average of 0.60 ± 0.05. The average value of Tw measurement was 102.83 ± 50.03 daPa (r = 0.605; p < 0.001). Conclusion There is a significant association between A-N ratio base on true lateral radiographic examination and Tw in adenoid hypertrophy patients.

AbstractTobacco smoking is the main risk factor for many diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as lung cancer and cigarettes. Smokers usually keep continuing to smoke during their mental activities in the evening between dinner and sleep time on work days. So it is critical to elucidate the relationship between cigarettes daily consumption and mental activities after dinner. A survey designed by ourselves was finished among 369 patients who came to our clinic for smoking cessation. Age, gender, BMI, cigarettes consumption were recorded and analyzed. Statistically, Pearson correlation test and general linear model test were used. Compared to ≤ 40 years’ group, patients with mental activities after dinner consumed more cigarettes than those without mental activities (22.80 ± 10.86 vs. 30.88 ± 18.69, P value < 0.001). The Pearson correlation test showed no interact effects on age and BMI, and general linear model test showed that the cigarettes numbers between smokers with mental activities after dinner and smokers without mental activities after dinner are different (P value < 0.001). Mental activities from dinner finish to sleep time increase cigarettes consumption. It provides evidence that mental thinking activities after dinner is a risk factor of tobacco using.

The loss of dental elements leads to an intense remodeling of the alveolar process, resulting in important dimensional changes, which often make it difficult to install dental implants. Considering this, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the changes in height and thickness that occurred in dental alveoli after extraction. For this, 10 patients were evaluated and submitted to extraction of dental elements and followed up in the postoperative period in which there was natural healing. Cone beam computed tomography were obtained preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively and were used as a basis for assessing loss of height and thickness that occurred. Pearson correlation test with a significance level of 5% was used to assess dimensional changes. The results showed that vertical loss (average of 2.99 mm) was greater than the horizontal loss (average of 2.52 mm). The statistical analysis pointed out the existence of a very good and significant correlation between these bone losses and also revealed that the higher the loss of height, the greater the loss of thickness. In 8 of 10 patients in the sample, some grafting was necessary prior to the installation of the implants, thus increasing morbidity and time of treatment. Considering this, it was concluded that the clot was not a viable alternative for alveolar preservation aiming posterior installation of dental implants.
