AbstractCourt mediation is now playing a crucial role in the Chinese legal system. Based on two case studies in Yunnan Province, this paper examines how court mediation works in Southwest China. It finds that court mediation can expand the capacity of the court concerning case acceptance, and is capable of fixing multicentre disputes and complicated social problems. However, the paper also points out that when encountering some ill-suited cases, justice may be undermined and the judge’s role may be confused. Therefore, it is necessary to pass some law to exclude the ill-suited cases from the mediation track when promoting court mediation in Southwest China.

In multi-family residential buildings, earthquake hazards mitigation and reconstruction are two sides of the same coin. The buildings are costly and difficult to retrofit and losses from the Loma Prieta earthquake make it clear that these buildings are significantly more costly and difficult to replace. Case studies of residential buildings which have been upgraded demonstrate that details and schedules are more important than the conceptual design. To achieve cost efficiency, traditional engineering design solutions must be adapted to the conditions found in existing buildings. Further, because construction is almost always done with tenants remaining in the building, cost efficiency must include social as well as technical design.

Twenty-first century film and television is overwhelmed with images of the undead. Vampires and zombies have often been seen as oppositional: one alluring, the other repellent; one seductive, the other infectious. With case studies of films like I Am Legend, Daybreakers, and 28 Days Later, as well as television programmes like Angel, In the Flesh, and The Walking Dead, this book challenges these popular assumptions and reveals the increasing interconnection of undead genres. Exploring how the figure of the vampire has been infused with the language of science, disease, and apocalypse, while the zombie text has increasingly been influenced by the trope of the ‘reluctant’ vampire, this book shows how both archetypes are actually two sides of the same undead coin. When considered together they present a dystopian, sometimes apocalyptic, vision of twenty-first century existence.
