Abstract Here, simultaneous in-situ calibration of pressures and temperatures was performed in a hinge-type second-stage cubic large volume press (LVP) up to 15 GPa and 1400 K by an acoustic travel-time approach. Based on the recently reported P-t S and P-T-t P -t S equations for Al2O3 buffer rod, the cell pressures and temperatures in the chamber of LVP were in-situ determined, in comparison with those by conventional off-line (or fixed-points) pressure calibration method and direct thermocouple measurement, respectively. It is found that the cell pressures of the LVP chamber are significantly reduced after annealing at simultaneous high pressures and high temperatures, owing to the stress relaxation as accumulate in the LVP chamber. This acoustic travel-time method is validated to be a good way for precise determination of thermal (cell) pressures at high temperature conditions, and is of great importance and necessity to conduct in-situ physical property measurements under extreme high P-T conditions, especially when the precious synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction beams are not available.

The speciation of Al-OH complexes in terms of Ala, Alb and Alc could be achieved by traditional ferron assay and Alb is generally considered as Al13, however, the inherent correlation between them remains an enigma. This paper presents a modified ferron assay to get precise determination of Al13 using nonlinear least squares analysis, and to clarify the correlation between Alb and Al13. Two parallel reactions conforming to pseudo-first-order kinetics can simulate the complicate reactions between polynuclear complexes and ferron successfully. Four types of experimental kinetic constant (k value) of Al-OH complexes can be observed by this method when investigating three typical aluminium solutions. Comparing with the results of 27Al NMR, the species with moderate kinetics around 0.001 s−1 can be confirmed to resemble to Al13 polycation. The other types of kinetics are also well-regulated in partially neutralized aluminium solutions with various OH/Al ratios (b values) in the range 0 ∼ 2.5. It would provide potential means to trace the in-situ formation of Al13 in dilute solutions such as coagulation with Al-based coagulants

A method for real-time determination of the percent cure of epoxies via in situ fiber-optic Raman spectroscopy has been developed. This method utilizes a probe design developed for real-time monitoring of polymer curing and multivariate analysis to interpret the data and determine percent cure. This method was demonstrated to be reliable to ±0.54% of cure in laboratory samples over a 50–99% cure range. A preliminary study measuring cure percentage in an industrial, glass-reinforced composite has been shown to be reliable to ±0.82% in the 40–90% cure range.

ABSTRACTWe report the first yield spectroscopy study on well characterized c-Si/a-Si:H heterojunctions grown in situ under UHV conditions. We find that this spectroscopy, when operated in the constant final state mode, allows a direct and precise determination of the valence-band discontinuity at the interface. A value of δEv = 0.44 ± 0.02 eV was found for the discontinuity.

In situsynchrotron powder diffraction has been used to probe the pressure-dependent structural properties of the magnetic molecular framework material Co(dca)2[dca = dicyanamide or N(CN)2−]. An orthorhombic (Pmnn) to monoclinic (P21/n) transformation to a high-pressure phase, namely γ-Co(dca)2, occurs at 1.1 GPa. Structural determination of γ-Co(dca)2shows that the rutile-like topology of the pristine material is retained at high pressures, with the lower symmetry allowing a progression of volume-reducing structural distortions. γ-Co(dca)2was stable at the maximum pressure measured of 4.2 GPa. Both phases were soft, with bulk moduli (B0) for α-Co(dca)2and γ-Co(dca)2of 13.15 (18) and 9.0 (6) GPa, respectively. Modest uniaxial negative linear compressibility (K) of the order of −4 TPa−1was observed over the entire measured pressure range.

Abstract The composition of feed water used in electrodialysis (ED) desalination causes the risk of CaCO3 scale crystallization in ED equipments, which leads to the decrease of process efficiency. To control scaling in water systems, several scaling indices and tests, permitting to predict the scaling occurrence, have been devised. In this study, an accelerated scaling test allowing to follow CaCO3 formation in water desalination plant using ED process was proposed. Tests were performed using a pilot unit as a conventional ED in batch recirculation mode. By simple in situ measurements of pH and flow rate of the concentrate, the crystallization onset and growth of CaCO3 were followed during the pilot operation. This leads to precise determination of the number of concentrate recirculation times and therefore to the highest recovery rate without scaling risk as a function of the inlet water quality and the antiscale pretreatment.
