Abstract Normal impact of a massive body on a uniformly stretched plate lying on the base is investigated. A hinged round or rectangular plate on an elastic base, or an infinite plate on the surface of an ideal incompressible fluid is considered. The solution to the elastoplastic impact is in good agreement with numerical calculations and experimental data. With a small parameter of elastic collapse, that is, with the developed local plastic deformations, a solution to the problem of impact with rigid-plastic local collapse can be used. Approximate formulas for calculating the main characteristics of rigid-plastic impact are set up.

This paper examines the impact behaviour of a non-homogenous sphere (in this case a cricket ball with a rolled core construction) with a rigid surface. Experiments were carried out to measure the force-deflection behaviour of a cricket ball during a normal impact in two orientations (impacting on the seam and perpendicular to the seam). For the two orientations of impact, a disparity was found in terms of the force-deflection behaviour. Greater deformation was found for impacts landing on the seam, compared to those landing perpendicular to the seam. Comparisons with quasi-static test data suggested that only the bottom third of the ball may have been compressed during impact. The dynamic force-deflection behaviour was modelled using a mass attached to a Hertzian spring in parallel with a damper whose damping coefficient varied with the contact area. The coefficients in the model could be described using the velocity before impact alone. The model was found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The model was then extended to predict oblique impacts by incorporating a measured coefficient of friction. This performed well in predicting the rebound velocity, angle and spin of a cricket ball after oblique impact with a cricket pitch. Inconsistencies in the results were attributed to deformation in the pitch surface.

In October and November 2009 a pilot project has been executed at the Delfland Coast in the Netherlands, constructing three small sandy headlands called Sand Groynes. Sand Groynes are nourished from the shore in seaward direction and anticipated to redistribute in the alongshore due to the impact of waves and currents to create the sediment buffer in the upper shoreface. The results presented in this paper intend to contribute to the assessment of Sand Groynes as a commonly applied nourishment method to maintain sandy coastlines. The morphological evolution of the Sand Groynes has been monitored by regularly conducting bathymetry surveys, resulting in a series of available bathymetry surveys. It is observed that the Sand Groynes have been redistributed in the alongshore, mainly in northward direction driven by dominant southwesterly wave conditions. Furthermore, data analysis suggests that Sand Groynes have a trapping capacity for alongshore supplied sand originating from upstream located Sand Groynes. A Delft3D numerical model has been set up to verify whether the morphological evolution of Sand Groynes can be properly hindcasted. Although the model has been set up in 2DH mode, hindcast results show good agreement with the morphological evolution of Sand Groynes based on field data. Trends of alongshore redistribution of Sand Groynes are well reproduced. Still the model performance could be improved, for instance by implementation of 3D velocity patterns and by a more accurate schematization of sediment characteristics.

A way of using flexible spiral blade as the executive part for spiral transportion was proposed, the mathematical model of its transportation resistance torque was set up, and the impact of structure parameter of flexible spiral blades on transportation power was analyzed. A experiment set-up was rigged, and tests were made to verify the theoretical model. The results of the experiment are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The research has enlightened the the parameter design of flexible spiral blades

Abstract In an effort to understand the dynamic hub forces on road vehicles, an advanced free-rolling tire-model is being developed in which the tread blocks and tire belt are modeled separately. This paper presents the interim results for the tread block modeling. The finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit is used to predict the contact forces on the tread blocks based on a linear viscoelastic material model. Special attention is paid to investigating the forces on the tread blocks during the impact and release motions. A pressure and slip-rate-dependent frictional law is applied in the analysis. A simplified numerical model is also proposed where the tread blocks are discretized into linear viscoelastic spring elements. The results from both models are validated via experiments in a high-speed rolling test rig and found to be in good agreement.

In this article, an analytical solution is obtained for the problem of bending a semi-infinite plate on an elastic Winkler base, taking into account incomplete contact with the base and the influence of longitudinal forces applied in the middle plane of the plate. The analytical solution is obtained by the method of generalized solutions using integral Fourier transforms. Any analytical solution is the result, approaching the actual working conditions of the designed structures.

Rotating systems components such as rotors, have dynamic characteristics that are of great importance to understand because they may cause failure of turbomachinery. Therefore, it is required to study a dynamic model to predict some vibration characteristics, in this case, the natural frequencies and mode shapes (both of free vibration) of a centrifugal compressor shaft. The peculiarity of the dynamic model proposed is that using frequency and displacements values obtained experimentally, it is possible to calculate the mass and stiffness distribution of the shaft, and then use these values to estimate the theoretical modal parameters. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the shaft were obtained with experimental modal analysis by using the impact test. The results predicted by the model are in good agreement with the experimental test. The model is also flexible with other geometries and has a great time and computing performance, which can be evaluated with respect to other commercial software in the future.

Much eighteenth-century Dissenting educational activity was built on an older tradition of Puritan endeavour. In the middle of the seventeenth century, the godly had seen education as an important tool in spreading their ideas but, in the aftermath of the Restoration, had found themselves increasingly excluded from universities and schools. Consequently, Dissenters began to develop their own higher educational institutions (in the shape of Dissenting academies) and also began to set up their own schools. While the enforcement of some of the legal restrictions that made it difficult for Dissenting institutions diminished across the eighteenth century, the restrictions did not disappear entirely. While there has been considerable focus on Dissenting academies and their contribution to debates about doctrinal orthodoxy, the impact of Dissenting schools was also considerable.

AbstractWe have set up an experimental device to optically study the scattering properties of dust particles. Measurements over the 8 — 174° interval of scattering angles are performed on a continuously flowing dust loaded jet illuminated by a polarized red HeNe laser beam. The scattering is averaged over the population of the dust particles in the jet, which can be determined independently, and give the “volume scattering function” for the two directions of polarization directly. While results for spherical particles are in good agreement with Mie theory, those for arbitrary particles show conspicuous deviations.

In order to improve the measurement of precipitation microphysical characteristics sensor (PMCS), the sampling process of raindrops by PMCS based on a particle-by-particle Monte-Carlo model was simulated to discuss the effect of different bin sizes on DSD measurement, and the optimum sampling bin sizes for PMCS were proposed based on the simulation results. The simulation results of five sampling schemes of bin sizes in four rain-rate categories show that the raw capture DSD has a significant fluctuation variation influenced by the capture probability, whereas the appropriate sampling bin size and width can reduce the impact of variation of raindrop number on DSD shape. A field measurement of a PMCS, an OTT PARSIVEL disdrometer, and a tipping bucket rain Gauge shows that the rain-rate and rainfall accumulations have good consistencies between PMCS, OTT, and Gauge; the DSD obtained by PMCS and OTT has a good agreement; the probability of N0, μ, and Λ shows that there is a good agreement between the Gamma parameters of PMCS and OTT; the fitted μ-Λ and Z-R relationship measured by PMCS is close to that measured by OTT, which validates the performance of PMCS on rain-rate, rainfall accumulation, and DSD related parameters.
