Abstract The fuel properties and the injection rate-shape play an important role in the improvement of the combustion process of Diesel engines. In this work, the influences of using the forthcoming renewable biodiesel fuels on fuel jet development utilizing a computer simulation model created with the AVL Hydsim software were studied. Biodiesel fuels B20, B30 and B100 were considered and compared with the original pure Diesel fuel D100. The injection system behaviour under research was that one existing on a tractor engine equipped with Delphi DP200 pump and Delphi injectors. Two engine speeds of 1400 rpm and 2400 rpm were considered representative for the engine operation. For these speeds, the fuel jet characteristics as penetration, spray cone angle and Sauter mean diameter were analyzed. It can emphasize that in similar conditions of needle lift and injection rate-shape variation the usage of biodiesel fuels does not significantly alter the injection pressure and the Sauter mean diameter. However, the specific physical properties of biodiesel fuels affect substantially the spray penetration and its cone angle.

To achieve uniform and efficient combustion in a rocket engine, a fine uniform spray is needed. The same is achieved by designing an injector with good atomization characteristics. Gas-centered swirl coaxial (GCSC) injector elements have been preferred recently in liquid rocket engines because of an inherent capability to dampen the pressure oscillations in the thrust chamber. The gas-centered swirl coaxial injector chosen for this study is proposed to be used in a semi-cryogenic rocket engine operating with oxidizer rich hot exhaust gases from the pre-burner and liquid kerosene as fuel. In this paper, nine different configurations of gas-centered swirl coaxial injector, sorted out by studying the spray angle and coefficient of discharge with swirl number varying from 9 to 20 and recess ratio of 0.5, 1, and 1.5 are investigated for their atomization characteristics. Spray uniformity, spray cone angle, and droplet size in terms of Sauter mean diameter and mass median diameter are studied at various momentum flux ratios for all configurations. Sauter mean diameter is almost independent of recess ratio, whereas cone angle was inversely proportional to the recess ratio. A finer atomization was observed for injectors of high swirl number but the pressure drop also increased to achieve the same flow rate. An injector of medium swirl number and recess ratio of 1.5 is deemed most fit for above-mentioned application.

In this work, the effects of orifice divergence on spray characteristics have been reported. Parameters such as spray cone angle, liquid sheet thickness, coefficient of discharge, break-up length, and Sauter mean diameter are greatly affected by the half divergence angle [Formula: see text] at orifice exit. An experimental investigation is carried out in which water sprays from five atomizers having half divergence angle values of 0°, 5°, 10°, 15°, and 20° are studied at different injection pressures. Image processing techniques are used to measure spray cone angle and break-up length from spray images, whereas the sheet thickness outside the orifice exit is obtained using the scattered light from a thin Nd-YAG Laser beam. Phase Doppler interferometry is also used to obtain the Sauter mean diameter at different axial locations. A few numerical simulations based on the volume of fluid method are included to obtain physical insight of the liquid film development and air core flow inside the atomizer. It is observed that the liquid sheet thickness as well as tangential and radial components of velocity at orifice exit are modified drastically with a change in half divergence angle. As a consequence, the droplet size distribution is also altered by variation in the nozzle divergence angle. The mechanism responsible for such variations in the spray behavior is identified as the formation of an air core or air cone inside the liquid injector as a result of the swirl imparted to the liquid flow.

An experimental investigation was conducted to study the effects of increased area of inlet tangential ports on the performance of small scale simplex atomizer. The spray characteristics of three different simplex atomizer representing increasing area of inlet tangential ports are examined using water as a working fluid. Measurements of coefficient of discharge, spray cone angle, Sauter mean diameter and droplet size distribution were carried out over wide range of injection pressure. Coriolis mass flow meter was used to measure coefficient of discharge. Spray cone angle was measured by image processing technique. Sauter mean diameter and droplet size distributions were measured by Malvern droplet sizing instrument. It was observed that with increase in area of inlet tangential ports the size of air core produced along the center line reduced, which increases the coefficient of discharge. Spray cone angle decreases with increase in area of inlet tangential ports. It was found that increase in area of inlet tangential ports reduces swirl strength inside swirl chamber, which results in increasing Sauter mean diameter. Better droplet size distribution was observed for lower area of inlet tangential port configuration. The obtained experimental results were compared with experimental correlations available in literatures. Deviations in the obtained experimental results and experimental correlations was observed. This is due to difference in the size of atomizer used and difference in experimental techniques used between the present work and other investigations.

The quality of the mixing process of fuel and air in a direct injection diesel engine relies heavily on the way the spray develops when injected into the combustion chamber. Among other factors, the spray development depends on the injection rate of the fuel delivered by the injector. The paper presents a study, at both a macroscopic and microscopic level, of a Diesel spray generated by a common-rail injection system featuring a piston pressure amplifier. By modifying the timing and the duration of the injector and amplifier piston actuation, it is possible to obtain high injection pressures up to 180MPa, and different shapes for the injection rate, which would not be achievable with a regular common rail injection system. The spray evolution produced by three different injection rate shapes (square, ramp, and boot) has been investigated in an injection test rig, by means of visualization and PDPA techniques, at different injection conditions. The main conclusions are the important effect on spray penetration of the initial injection rate evolution and the small influence of the maximum injection pressure attained at the end of the injection event. Smaller or even negligible effects have been found on the spray cone angle and on the droplet Sauter mean diameter.

A detailed investigation of the effect of nozzle/needle diameter ratio, normal fuel area, swirler degree, air pressure, fuel pressure on flow number, cone angle and droplet size distribution of external mixing twin fluid atomizers is given in this paper. Forty atomizers have been constructed to prevent mutual effect of various parameters. Flow number and cone angle are found to increase with nozzle/diameter ratio, and to decrease with the increase of air pressure. Optimum fuel flow is obtained at swirler angle 30-deg, while cone angle increases with increase of swirler angle. Sauter mean diameter decreases with the increase of air pressure and decrease of fuel pressure. Suitable functions are derived for droplet size distribution, Sauter mean diameter, and flow number. They are suitable to predict the geometry of the atomizer and to be used also in a prediction model for the calculation of fuel concentration and heat release.

A comparative study has been performed of the drop-size distribution of sprays of emulsified and neat distillate-type aviation fuels at elevated temperatures (308K to 700K) and pressures (101 kPa to 586 kPa). All drop-size data were obtained with a Malvern Model 2200 Particle Sizer based on the forward angle diffraction pattern produced by the drops when illuminated by a collimated HeNe laser beam. Fuels included a standard multicomponent jet fuel, Jet-A, and a single component fuel, hexadecane, in both neat form and emulsified with 20 percent (by vol.) water and 2 percent (by vol.) surfactant. The initial breakup and atomization of a neat and emulsified fuel were quite similar at all conditions, and the evaporation rates appeared similar at various temperatures for pressures at or below about 300 kPa. At higher pressures with elevated temperatures the emulsified fuels of both types produce drops of significantly smaller Sauter mean diameter than the neat fuels as distance from the nozzle increases. These results are consistent with the microexplosion hypothesis, but there could also be alternative explanations. A detailed computer model which predicts heat up rates, steady state drop temperatures, evaporation rates, and drop trajectories has been used to help interpret the results. An additional point which has been observed is that the initial Sauter mean diameter produced with constant differential nozzle pressure is dependent on the air pressure with an exponent of about −0.4, i.e., SMD ∼ Pair−0.4. Some recent correlations often quoted omit the pressure (density) of air term.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of injection parameters on the injection and spray characteristics of dimethyl ether and diesel fuel. In order to analyze the injection and spray characteristics of dimethyl ether and diesel fuel with employing high-pressure common-rail injection system, the injection characteristics such as injection delay, injection duration, and injection rate, spray cone angle and spray tip penetration was investigated by using the injection rate measuring system and the spray visualization system. In this work, the experiments of injection rate and spray visualization are performed at various injection parameters. It was found that injection quantity was decreased with the increase of injection pressure at the same energizing duration and injection pressure In the case of injection characteristics, dimethyl ether showed shorter of injection delay, longer injection duration and lower injected mass flow rate than diesel fuel in accordance with various energizing durations and injection pressures. Also, spray development of dimethyl ether had larger spray cone angle than that of diesel fuel at various injection pressures. Spray tip penetration was almost same development and tendency regardless of injection angles.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the spray macroscopic characteristics of biodiesel, diethyl carbonate (DEC)-biodiesel blends and diesel fuel based on a common-rail injection system. The spray tip penetration, spray cone angle and the spray projected area were measured through a high-speed photography method. The experimental results reveal that injection pressure and ambient pressure have significant effects on the spray characteristics. Higher injection pressure makes the spray tip penetration increase, while higher back pressure inside the chamber leads to the enlargement of the spray cone angle. The addition of DEC causes the blends fuels to have a shorter penetration and larger spray projected area, which reveals the potential capacity to improve the atomization process compared with biodiesel. The estimation of spray droplet size indicates that DEC30 generates a smaller Sauter mean diameter (SMD) because of its lower surface tension and viscosity. Model predictions were illustrated and compared with current work.

A prototype Diesel common rail direct-acting piezoelectric injector has been used to study the influence of fuel injection rate shaping on spray behavior (liquid phase penetration) under evaporative and non-reacting conditions. This state of the art injector allows a fully flexible control of the nozzle needle, enabling various fuel injection rates typologies under a wide range of test conditions. The tests have been performed employing a novel continuous flow test chamber that allows an accurate control on a wide range of thermodynamic test conditions (up to 1000 K and 15 MPa). The temporal evolution of the spray has been studied recording movies of the injection event with a fast camera (25 kfps) by means of the Mie scattering visualization technique. The analysis of the results showed a strong influence of needle position on the behavior of the liquid length. The needle position controls the effective pressure upstream of the nozzle holes. Higher needle lift is equivalent to higher effective pressures. According to the free-jet theory, the stabilized liquid-length depends mainly on effective diameter, spray cone-angle and fuel/air properties and does not depend on injection velocity. Therefore, higher injection pressures gives slightly lower liquid length due to small change in the spray cone-angle. However, partial needle lifts has an opposite effect: lower effective pressure upstream of the nozzle holes shows a dramatic increase on the spray cone-angle, reducing the liquid length. This behavior could be explained mainly due to the fact that the flow direction upstream of the nozzle holes is affecting the area coefficient, or in other words, the effective diameter of the holes.

The complicated cavitating flow inside diesel nozzles has long been concentrated on. Based on the visualization experimental system, cavitating flow characteristic inside transparent nozzles with different length-diameter ratios was investigated in this paper. Experimental results showed that the cavitation is easier to occur for diesel than for biodiesel, and the longer the length of the orifice is, the harder the cavitation and hydraulic flip phenomenon to occur. Discharge coefficient of diesel was higher than that of biodiesel in single-phase flow region, while got much smaller than that of biodiesel in the cavitating flow and hydraulic flip regions.The spray cone angle of diesel was larger than biodiesel in cavitating flow regime, and got much smaller with the increasing of the length-diameter ratios under the same level of injection pressure in diesel and biodiesel fuels.
