Abstract Brief morphological descriptions of new Cladocera taxa (Daphniidae): Daphnia (Daphnia) turbinata Sars, 1903; Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) sinensis Gu, Xu, Li, Dumont et Han 2013, found in Lake Baikal are presented. The representatives of these taxa inhabit the littoral zone of the lake and Olkhon Island. Daphnia (Ctenodaphnia) sinensis were encountered in the water bodies in the south of Eastern Siberia for the first time.

The species diversity of the superclass Crustacea only in Lake Baikal has 58 species of the superorder Cladocera and 52 species and subspecies from the subclass Соpepoda, 5 of them belong to the order Calanoida and 47 to the order Cyclopoida. Species that inhabit the waters of Olkhon Island are not included in this list. On the island there are temporary and permanent reservoirs, which by the chemical composition of the water are fresh or brackish. The species diversity of the island crustaceans includes 28 species, of which only 64 % are known for Baikal. This article gives a brief description of the morphology of rare and small species from the family Daphniidae: Ceriodaphnia megops Sars 1985; Diaptomidae: Arctodiaptomus (A.) wierzejskii (Richard, 1888) and Cyclopidae: Eucyclops arcanus Alekseev, 1990. The first two species were found in Lake Baikal, the third species – on Olkhon Island. Morphological analysis of the species was performed by means of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A detailed description of the morphological features of C. megops, A. (A.) wierzejskii female and male, and E. arcanus female with illustrations is presented. Data on diaptomus and cyclopoid mouth appendages, tables with biometrical parameters of a cyclopoid are provided. Images of cyclopoid Р1–Р4 coxopodite and basal exopodite segment are shown for the first time. C. megops and A. (A.) wierzeskii crustaceans are rare species in the water bodies of the south of Central Asia, including Mongolia. A. (A.) wierzeskii population is the first finding in the water bodies of the south of Eastern Siberia and Baikal.

We studied the fauna of leech and leech-like species inhabiting main water streams of Eastern Siberia and its tributaries, which are attributed to Lake Baikal basin and Lena River basin. Here we present their list for the first time. This study was mainly aimed for free-living parasitic and carnivorous leeches whereas piscine parasites were not included specially. In total, the potamic leech fauna of Eastern Siberia includes 12 described species belonging to 10 genera. Representatives of three unidentified species of two genera Erpobdella and Barbronia have been also recorded.

Two nematode species isolated from sediments of the littoral zone of the South China Sea on the coast of Vietnam are described and illustrated. Microlaimus capitatus sp. n. is closely related to M. affinis Gerlach, 1958 and M. amphidius Kamran et al., 2009, but differs by having a thin, poorly developed pharyngostom, more posterior vulva and presence of terminal setae on the tail. The female of Dichromadora simplex Timm, 1961 is described and illustrated for the first time.

Biological aggregations, in particular photogranules, can be found in different environments as one of the forms of existence of microorganisms, algae and small invertebrates. As far as they are systems, in which multiple ecological functions are performed by different elements simultaneously, they are considered a promising means for use in wastewater treatment. This paper provides description and composition of photogranules for the first time discovered in mass, 2,5 m away from the water edge in Listvennichnyi Bay of Lake Baikal in October 2015. The photogranules were maroon, free-floating, with a diameter of 0,5 to 1,5 cm, and were not hollow. Their main component was radially divergent filaments of oscillatorian cyanobacteria dominated by the members of the genus Symplocastrum. Photogranules with a diameter of less than 1 cm contained a large number of filaments of Spirogyra sp. ster., which in recent years have become widespread in the littoral of Lake Baikal and in the Angara River. In addition, there were fragments of numerous filamentous green algae, as well as diatom cells with Didymosphenia spp. dominance. The identified taxa are typical for the stony littoral zone of the lake at the depths from 0 to 3 m. Photogranulation in Baikal may be the result of overproduction of bottom communities of algae and cyanobacteria under conditions of increased anthropogenic load in the shallow water zone. Probably, photogranules can act as one of the mechanisms that perform the functions of natural self-purification in Baikal.

New data on Lake Baikal fauna of Hirudinida (Annelida, Clitellata) are presented. The species composition of Baikal leeches extends to 20 species belonging to two orders, four families, and 12 genera. An updated checklist includes information on five species recorded in Eastern Siberia for the first time. All specimens from author’s collection are provided with illustration.

Information on the Sphagnum mosses of the South Ossetia is generalized, the resulted list is presented. Nine species of Sphagnum are included in the list, whereabouts data and references to the publications are given, and the presence of a sample in the Herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute RAS (LE) is noted. The species Sphagnum platyphyllum (Lindb. ex Braithw.) Warnst. rarely occurring in the Caucasus is reported in the South Ossetia for the first time. The species was found in the Caucasus, South Ossetia, at the side of the Ertso Lake (42°28ʹN, 43°45ʹE), 1720 m a. s. l., among sedge thickets at the margin of the overgrowing lake. The peculiarities of its occurrence and ecological conditions are considered. Its distribution in the Caucasus and in the world is discussed.

Lichen specimens collected in 2008, 2015 and 2016 in Central (Olekminsky district), Eastern (Oimyakon district) and Southern (Aldan, Neryungri districts) Yakutia were studied. As a result 16 lichen species are recorded for Yakutia for the first time, among them 8 species are new to Eastern Siberia and one species — Ramonia himelbrantii — new to Asia. At present the list of lichens of Yakutia numbers about 820 species.

Until recently only two species of Gyalideopsis (G. piceicola and G. alnicola) were known from very few localities in Russia. Gyalideopsis helvetica is reported for the first time for Russia from the southern part of Baikal area (KhamarDaban Range, Baikalsky Zapovednik). Description of the collected specimen and its comparison with the literature data are provided; morphology, ecology and distribution of G. helvetica are discussed. The hyphophores of G. helvetica are recorded and described for the first time. An identification key to Gyalideopsis species known in Russia is provided.
