This study presents robustness analyses of a three-dimensional multi-storey composite steel structure under the action of multiple fire scenarios. The main objective of the work is to improve current understanding of the collapse resistance of this type of building under different fire situations. A finite element approach was adopted with the model being firstly validated against previous studies available in the literature. The modelling approach was then used to investigate the collapse resistance of the structure for the various fire scenarios examined. Different sizes of fire compartment are considered in this study, starting from one bay, three bays and lastly the whole ground floor as the fire compartment. The investigation allows a fundamental understanding of load redistribution paths and member interactions when local failure occurs. It is concluded that the robustness of the focussed building in a fire is considerably affected by the size of fire compartments as well as fire location. The subject building can resist progressive collapse when the fire occurs only in the one-bay compartment. On the other hand, total collapse occurs when fire is located in the edge three-bay case. This shows that more than one fire scenario needs to be taken into consideration to ensure that a structure of this type can survive from collapse in the worst-case situation.

Three dimensional elastic-plastic contact of two nominally flat rough surfaces is by developing the equations governing the shoulder-shoulder contact of asperities based on the Chang, Etsion and Bogy (CEB) model of contact in which volume conservation is assumed in the plastic flow regime. Shoulder-shoulder asperity contact yields a slanted contact force consisting of both tangential (parallel to mean plane) and normal components. Each force component comprises elastic and elastic-plastic parts. Statistical summation of normal force components leads to the derivation of the normal contact force for the elastic-plastic contact akin to the CEB model. Half-plane tangential force due to elastic-plastic contact is derived through the statistical summation of tangential force component along an arbitrary tangential direction.

Using modern EHL programs it is relatively simple to determine the pressures and clearances in rough EHL contacts. The pressures may then be used to calculate the subsurface stresses in the two contacting components. However, the results depend on the assumptions made about the fluid’s rheology. While it is possible to measure the clearances using interferometric techniques, measurement of either the pressures or stresses is extremely difficult. However it is these, rather than the clearances, that determine the life of the contact. In previous papers the authors have described how the inverse method may be used to validate the stress predictions for contacts with transverse roughness. This type of contact has fluid flow in only one plane and it remained necessary to check the results for more general rough surfaces where the flow is three-dimensional. Accordingly, the inverse method is extended, in this paper, to a situation where out-of-plane flow is significant. The paper describes the approach and presents some preliminary results for rolling contacts.

A three-dimensional numerical model based on a semianalytical method in the framework of small strains and small displacements is presented for solving an elastic-plastic contact with surface traction. A Coulomb’s law is assumed for the friction, as commonly used for sliding contacts. The effects of the contact pressure distribution and residual strain on the geometry of the contacting surfaces are derived from Betti’s reciprocal theorem with initial strain. The main advantage of this approach over the classical finite element method (FEM) is the computing time, which is reduced by several orders of magnitude. The contact problem, which is one of the most time-consuming procedures in the elastic-plastic algorithm, is obtained using a method based on the variational principle and accelerated by means of the discrete convolution fast Fourier transform (FFT) and conjugate gradient methods. The FFT technique is also involved in the calculation of internal strains and stresses. A return-mapping algorithm with an elastic predictor∕plastic corrector scheme and a von Mises criterion is used in the plasticity loop. The model is first validated by comparison with results obtained by the FEM. The effect of the friction coefficient on the contact pressure distribution, subsurface stress field, and residual strains is also presented and discussed.

This paper presents finite element analyses of two-dimensional (plane strain), elastic-plastic, repeated, frictionless rolling contact. The analysis employs the elastic-perfectly plastic, cycle and strain-amplitude-independent material used in the Merwin and Johnson analysis but avoids several assumptions made by these workers. Repeated rolling contacts are simulated by multiple translations of a semielliptical Hertzian pressure distribution. Results at p0/k = 3.5, 4.35, and 5.0 are compared to the Merwin and Johnson prediction. Shakedown is observed at p0/k = 3.5, but the comparisons reveal significant differences in the amount and distribution of residual shear strain and forward flow at p0/k = 4.35 and p0/k = 5.0. The peak incremental, shear strain per cycle for steady state is five times the value calculated by Merwin and Johnson, and the plastic strain cycle is highly nonsymmetric.

The simultaneous effects of mechanical and thermal surface loadings on the deformation of layered media were analyzed with the finite element method. A three-dimensional model of an elastic sphere sliding over an elastic-plastic layered medium was developed and validated by comparing finite element results with analytical and numerical solutions for the stresses and temperature distribution at the surface of an elastic homogeneous half-space. The evolution of deformation in the layered medium due to thermomechanical surface loading is interpreted in light of the dependence of temperature, von Mises equivalent stress, first principal stress, and equivalent plastic strain on the layer thickness, Peclet number, and sliding distance. The propensity for plastic flow and microcracking in the layered medium is discussed in terms of the thickness and thermal properties of the layer, sliding speed, medium compliance, and normal load. It is shown that frictional shear traction and thermal loading promote stress intensification and plasticity, especially in the case of relatively thin layers exhibiting low thermal conductivity.

The cyclic strain approach is useful for determining the fatigue life of notches strained in the elastic-plastic region. Examples are the flame-cut edges of cutouts in the ship steel structure. After the description of the cyclic stress-strain behavior of the usual mild steel, the individual elements of the approach are described: the probability distribution of load amplitudes, the relationship between load and local elastic-plastic strain, the relationship between the damage parameter and fatigue life, and finally the damage accumulation law. The approach is illustrated by two examples of longitudinal/transverse web intersections. In the first, the predicted life is confirmed by experimental results. The second example shows the approach for complicated load combinations. It is hoped that this paper will contribute to sound and crack-free ship structural details, particularly if unusual loads are applied to well-tried details or if simplified designs are introduced.
