Abstract Fano resonance and plasma induced transparency (PIT) have been widely observed in various plasmonic nanostructures. Fano resonance takes place in weak coupling regime where coupling constant between two electromagnetic modes is lower than damping constant of system. Hence, extracting coupling and damping coefficients from resonance spectrum is the key to distinguish between Fano resonance and other resonances. In this paper, we propose a simple and realizable coupled LC circuit to analyze Fano resonance and PIT. Weak and strong coupling regime are distinguished by comparing coupling constant with damping constant. Meanwhile, we gain deep insight into Fano resonance and PIT in circuit by analyzing circuit phase and understand their connection with resonance in photonic structure. Furthermore, we extend the equivalent circuit model to the field involved short-range plasmon polarization or multi-orders dark modes. Since there are no specific parameters associated with photonic nanostructure, the proposed equivalent circuit can be used in most plasmonic resonance system as an universal model.

A compact frequency selective surface (FSS) for 5G applications has been designed based on 2.5-dimensional Jerusalem cross. The proposed element consists of two main parts: the successive segments of the metal traces placed alternately on the two surfaces of the substrate and the vertical vias connecting traces. Compared with previous published two-dimensional miniaturized elements, the transmission curves indicate a significant size reduction (1/26 wavelengths at the resonant frequency) and exhibit good angular and polarization stabilities. Furthermore, a general equivalent circuit model is established to provide direct physical insight into the operating principle of this FSS. A prototype of the proposed FSS has been fabricated and measured, and the results validate this design.

Biomimetic actuators that can produce soft-actuation but large force generation capability are of interest. NafionTM, an effective ionomeric material from DuPont, has been shown to produce large deformation under low electric fields (<10V/mm). In this effort, multi-walled carbon nanotube (M-CNT)/NafionTM nanocomposites were prepared by casting in order to investigate the effect of M-CNT loading in the range of 0 to 7 wt% on electromechanical properties of the MCNT/ NafionTM nanocomposites. The measured elastic modulus and actuation force of the MCNT/ NafionTM nanocomposites are drastically different, showing larger elastic modulus and improved electromechanical coupling, from the one without M-CNT. In this work, we attempted to incorporate an equivalent circuit analysis to address the effect of capacitance and resistance of such M-CNT/NafionTM nanocomposites that would differ from conventional IPMCs.

TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRA) were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method for preparing the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). It was found that a post-thermal treatment facilitated enhancing the cell efficiency. The cells containing NRs underwent 500 °C annealing exhibited much higher efficiency than those un-sintered ones. Further, the internal resistance analysis was carried out to reveal the mechanism underlying the DSSC performance improvement. Specifically, the equivalent circuit model was employed to derivate the internal resistances, which was consistent with the experimental results. It was found that the sintered cells exhibited a higher series resistance and a lower shunt resistance than the un-sintered ones, suggesting the higher photocurrent density might result from the larger amount of dye loading.

This paper presents the design and experiment of a novel microwave gain equalizer based on the substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technique. The proposed equalizer is formed by an SIW loaded by SIW resonators, which has very compact structure and can compensate for gain slope of microwave systems. Equivalent circuit analysis is given about the proposed structure for a better insight into the structure’s response. A Ku-Band equalizer with four SIW resonators is simulated and fabricated with a multilayer printed circuit board process. The measured results show good performance and agreement with the simulated results; an attenuation slope of −4.5 dB over 12.5–13.5 GHz is reached with a size reduction of 76%.

Using equivalent circuit analysis, the dynamic behavior of ultrasonic wave propagation in solid metals is investigated in this study, particularly in Langevin vibrators clamped with a resonant amplifier to enlarge the vibrating magnitude. For piezoelectric static feature, the piezoceramic impedance and equivalent circuits were obtained for the parameter model of the vibrator via the impedance analyzer. To analyze piezoceramic dynamic feature, the characteristic of motional current relative to frequency response was measured under practical operating voltage for the vibrator. Both static and dynamic features of a piezoceramic vibrator were compared to realize the difference and to build the dynamic equivalent circuit. The vibration measurement module of optical fiber was also employed to detect the maximum displacement of a vibrator with a resonant amplifier. The measured results demonstrate that the resonant frequency is moved to the lower frequency band. The new equivalent circuit model is proposed to further match the dynamic response and the stepped horn increases the vibrating amplitude by about seven times. This is the more efficient mechanical output for a vibrator.

A novel, improved equivalent circuit model of double-sided linear induction motors (DLIMs) is proposed, which takes the skin effect and the nonzero leakage reactance of the secondary, longitudinal, and transverse end effects into consideration. Firstly, the traditional equivalent circuit with longitudinal and transverse end effects are briefly reviewed. Additionally, the correction coefficients for longitudinal and transverse end effects derived by one-dimensional analysis models are given. Secondly, correction factors for skin effect, which reflects the inhomogeneous air gap magnetic field vertically, and the secondary leakage reactance are derived by the quasi-two-dimensional analysis model. Then, the proposed equivalent circuit is presented, and the excitation reactance and secondary resistance are modified by the correction coefficients derived from the three analytical models. Finally, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model is used to verify the proposed equivalent circuit model under varying air gap width and frequency, and the results are also compared with that of the traditional equivalent circuit models. The calculated thrust characteristics by the proposed equivalent circuit and 3D finite element model are experimentally validated under a constant voltage–frequency drive.
