Abstract This roadmap aims to define the guidelines to maximise the impact of the 3D printing revolution on the next generation of devices for the energy transition. It also outlines the current status, challenges and required advances in Science and Technology for a series of power generation technologies (fuel cells, solar cells, thermoelectric generators and turbomachinery) and energy storage technologies (electrolysers, batteries and supercapacitors). Finally, the roadmap discusses the role of 3D printing in improving the mass and heat transfer to improve the energy efficiency of chemical reactors (CO2 conversion) and novel cooling systems. With this document, the authors intend to provide a valuable tool for researchers, technology developers, and policymakers when defining their strategies for the energy sector's future.

This chapter analyses the role of electricity storage as an innovative strategy to attain the Mexican Government’s goals regarding carbon dioxide emission reduction and energy transition. The survey includes the analysis of the different electricity storage technologies as well as the legal framework governing electricity storage as the fifth link of the energy supply chain from a comparative perspective. The authors discuss whether energy storage is a generation or a distribution/transmission asset. The chapter also analyses Mexico’s experiences in energy storage and briefly describes the way it is regulated in other jurisdictions. Finally, the authors propose the regulation of energy storage as a separate licensed activity.

Abstract This study focuses on the role of institutional factors as well as financial development in renewable energy transition in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region over the period 1990-2018 using the ARDL PMG method. The investigation of long-run and short-run analysis confirms that institutional and political factors play a key role in promoting the transition to renewable energy, and shows that improving these factors can lead to decarbonization of the energy sector in the long run. Another important finding is that global financial development does not have a significant effect on the transition process in the long run, implying that the whole financial system needs a fundamental structural change to accelerate the substitution between polluting and clean energies. However, in the short term, the impact appears to be negative and significant, highlighting the inadequacy of financial institutions and financial markets in promoting the region’s sustainable path. Moreover, income drives the transition to renewable energy in both short and long term. The causality results show that both financial development and institutional quality lead to renewable energy transition, while there is a bidirectional link between income and renewable energy.This study can provide a very useful recommendation to promote a clean transition in the MENA region.

In an era of energy transition involving an increase in renewable energy and a reduction in coal-fired power generation and nuclear power generation, the role of combined heat and power (CHP) as a bridging energy is highly emphasized. This article attempts to look empirically into the impact of increasing the share of renewable energy in total electricity generation on CHP share in total electricity generation in a cross-country context. Data from 35 countries during the period 2009–2015 were used, and the least absolute deviations estimator was applied to obtain a more robust parameter estimate. The results showed that a 1%p increase in the share of renewable energy significantly increased the CHP share by 0.87%p. Therefore, the hypothesis that CHP serves as bridge energy in the process of energy transition was established.

The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the energy sector and the current status of photovoltaic (PV) systems in Suriname and to investigate which role PV systems can play in this country’s future energy transition. At this moment, 64% of the power is available from diesel/heavy fuel oil (HFO) gensets while 36% is available from renewables namely hydroelectric power systems and PV systems. Suriname has renewable energy (RE) targets for 2017 and 2022 which already have been achieved by this 36%. However, the RE target of 2027 of 47% must be achieved yet. As there is abundant irradiance available, on an average 1792 kWh/m2/year and because several PV systems have already been successfully implemented, PV can play an important role in the energy transition of Suriname. In order to achieve the 2027 target with only PV systems, an additional 110 MWp of installed PV capacity will be required. Governmental and non-governmental institutes have planned PV projects. If these will be executed in the future than annually 0.8 TWh electricity will be produced by PV systems. In order to meet the electricity demand of 2027 fully, 2.2 TWh PV electricity will be required which implies that more PV systems must be implemented in Suriname besides the already scheduled ones.

Abstract The myeloproliferative disorders have been the “poor cousins” in the family of hematological malignancies for some time. Recently this field has advanced considerably with the description of a mutation in the JAK2 kinase detectable in the majority of patients and the publication of two landmark clinical trials—ECLAP and MRC PT1. But although both ECLAP and MRC PT1 inform clinical management and allude to the complexities of thrombosis we still lack fundamental knowledge, and our understanding of thrombosis in these conditions has not paralleled advances in the field of thrombosis and vascular biology. The predominant clinical complications of essential thrombocythemia and polycythemia vera are thrombotic and hemorrhagic; these significantly impact upon prognosis and quality of life. Here the current status of our knowledge is reviewed with specific emphasis upon the role of the platelet in the pathogenesis of thrombosis as well as the impact of recent data from ECLAP and MRC PT1.

The article is devoted to the characterization of the models and the stages of formation of education systems in African countries and of their current status. The aim of the work was to analyze the impact of various factors on the development of education in Africa. In particular, the impact of military conflicts and the activities of terrorist organizations on the field of education were investigated. It also analyzes the increasing role of the world community in the development of education in African countries in recent decades. The main examples are the aspects of the activities of the terrorist organization Boko Haram, aimed at destabilizing and directly destroying the education system of Nigeria, and the impact of the Mali conflict of 2012-2013 on education. The activities of Boko Haram are widely covered in the scientific literature, but the article focuses on its aspects that are connected precisely with the negative impact on the educational system in Nigeria. The work broadens the perception of the challenges currently facing educational systems in Africa.

Patients with respiratory distress often seek emergency medical care and are frequently transported by emergency medical services (EMS). Some of them are in need of urgent respiratory support.EMSencounters with patients in respiratory distress and the role of mechanical ventilation (MV) in their treatment have not been well documented. The study objective was to characterize the epidemiology of prehospital respiratory distress and the impact of MV at subsequent patient outcomes. Some of the new trends in prehospital respiratory therapy have also been described.

Objective: Work stress is one of the urgent public health problems, which has aroused wide attention. In addition, work stress also has a negative impact on the development of enterprises. This study has three purposes: (1) to understand the current status of working stress among couriers, (2) to examine the association between work stress, job satisfaction and sleep quality of Chinese couriers, and (3) to verify the mediating role of psychological capital.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 3000 couriers in Beijing of China from January to December 2019 using cluster stratified random sampling. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to describe demographic characteristics of respondents. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation among work stress, job satisfaction, sleep quality, and psychological capital. The mediating analysis was calculated role of psychological capital.Results: A total of 2831 participants were included in this study. The average score of work stress was 2.49 ± 0.76. Work stress was negatively correlated with job satisfaction (r = −0.266, P < 0.01), sleep quality (r = –0.142, P < 0.01), and psychological capital (r = −0.268, P < 0.01), respectively. The direct effect of work stress on job satisfaction is –0.223, and the total effect of work stress on job satisfaction is –0.267. The a*b*c’ is positive, indicating the mediating role psychological capital has in explaining the relationship between couriers’ work stress and job satisfaction. Moreover, psychological capital plays a mediating role between work stress and sleep quality among couriers.Conclusion: Couriers face certain work stress and should be paid attention to and psychological capital can effectively alleviate the work stress of couriers, so measures can be taken to improve it, promoting healthy development of employees and organizations.

Implementation of change management is necessary for any construction projects especially infrastructure projects where government allocated billions of ringgit for the country development and the impact of change can be minimised if attended earlier. Nowadays, subcontractors were hired by the contractor to carry out the actual work as subcontracting is a very common practice in this industry. This research was initiated to identify the possible causes of change and then investigated the current status of change management implementation in Malaysia’s infrastructure project. A questionnaire survey was designed to collect data for this research. 102 out of 130 sets of questionnaires were collected from the targeted respondents. Then, a comprehensive analysis was conducted. It was discovered that “design change”, “addition/omission of scopes” and “ambiguities and mistakes in specifications and drawings” were ranked as top three factors contributing to change in Malaysia’ infrastructure projects. This research also discovered that the implementation status of change management was surprisingly high with 72.54% of the infrastructure projects implemented change management. Lastly, the subcontractors’ involvement in contractor’s change management process affected the project performance positively was confirmed in this research as the projects with subcontractor involvement had statistically significant better project performance in terms of time, cost and quality of work. The identification of the root cause for change in infrastructure project helps the future project practitioners to avoid such situation and more well-prepared for it. Subsequently, this research discovered the benefit of practising change management within the infrastructure projects and getting the subcontractor involvement statistically. The findings of this research could improve the project performance of Malaysia’s infrastructure projects.
