Abstract The Triatoma sordida subcomplex traditionally included four triatomine species, T. sordida, Triatoma garciabesi, Triatoma guasayana, and Triatoma patagonica, distributed in the Southern Cone of South America. These species have a large intraspecific variability together with an overall similarity, making difficult to establish their taxonomic status. Many cytogenetic, morphometric, and molecular markers have been applied to address this. Recent studies have posed concerns on the inclusion of T. guasayana and T. patagonica within the subcomplex. Also, T. sordida from Argentina has been designed as a new species, Triatoma rosai. Using the cuticular hydrocarbon pattern as chemotaxonomic marker, the relationships among several populations of these species were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography and linear discriminant analysis along 25 collection sites in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Paraguay. T. sordida and T. rosai populations were differentially clustered in two CHC-based groups: “Group 1” included T. sordida from Eastern Brazil, Eastern Paraguay, and the Bolivian populations from La Paz and Izozog G1; “Group 2” included T. rosai, and T. sordida from Izozog G2 (Bolivia), and Western Paraguay. Whereas T. garciabesi remained closely related to T. sordida and T. rosai, T. guasayana, and T. patagonica were clearly separated from the species of the T. sordida subcomplex. Our results agree with those from other several techniques suggesting that the taxonomy of the T. sordida subcomplex should be revised.

We propose 31 synonyms for nine South American species of Miconia (Melastomataceae), mostly from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil (with one species in “campos rupestres” and another from the Atlantic Forest in Paraguay); all belong to the ‘Miconia discolor clade’. Of these synonyms, 19 are species and 12 are varieties or subspecies, all of them described by the end of the XIX or early XX centuries, and most of them known in herbaria mostly from isotypes or syntypes (except for Miconia cabucu, M. chartacea and M. saldanhae). Miconia flammea var. major is synonymized under M. brunnea; Miconia amambayensis and M. oblongifolia under M. buddlejoides; Miconia augusti, M. divaricata, M. fasciculata subsp. catharinensis, M. fasciculata var. robusta, M. fluminensis, M. gilva, M. rabenii, M. saldanhae, M. saldanhae var. grandifolia and M. saldanhae var. subsessilifolia under M. fasciculata; Miconia chartacea, M. chartacea var. angustifolia, M. chartacea var. brevifolia, M. chartacea var. longifolia and M. chartacea var. miqueliana sob M. flammea; Miconia altissima, M. cabucu, M. formosa var. angustifolia, M. gigantea, M. mourae, and M. ovalifolia under M. formosa; Miconia ovata under M. organensis; Miconia maximowicziana and M. maximowicziana var. major under M. sclerophylla; Miconia eichleri, M. eichleri var. australis, and M. pseudoeichleri under M. valtheri; and Miconia argyraea under M. willdenowii. We also designate lectotypes for all names but M. fasciculata subsp. catharinensis, M. maximowicziana and M. ovata, which already have holotypes designated by the respective authors. We corrected the spelling of M. buddlejoides (previously known as M. budlejoides), M. saldanhae (formerly M. saldanhaei) and M. mourae (formerly M. mouraei). In the present century, 14 species of Miconia s.s. have been described for the Atlantic Forest, and another 43 species, subspecies and varieties have been synonymized (including the ones performed here). This means that a significant inflation of names has been corrected, since the genus has been deflated by 29 taxa. The synonyms proposed here will help students of the family and other researchers employ the correct names in biological studies, which in turn will help to fine tune biodiversity studies and conservation efforts.

We reviewed the taxonomic status of populations of frogs in the genus Hemiphractus in Panama, which have all been referred to Hemiphractus fasciatus Peters, 1862 for over 40 years. Although relatively few specimens have been collected, mostly juveniles, it is clear that these frogs inhabit three separate upland regions of the country: The Cordillera de Talamanca in western Panama, the Chagres Highlands and Cordillera de San Blas in central Panama, and the Serranía de Pirre in the far eastern portion of the country. In accordance with previously published molecular data, we identified distinctive features of the skulls of frogs representing these three allopatric populations and herein revalidate H. panamensis (Stejneger, 1917), describe the new species Hemiphractus elioti sp. nov. from the Cordillera de Talamanca, and the new species Hemiphractus kaylockae sp. nov. from the Serranía de Pirre. We also propose that the taxon H. fasciatus is a South American species not occurring in Panama.

Centris (Paracentris) Cameron is one of the more diverse subgenera within the bee genus Centris (Moure et al. 2007), being broadly distributed in the Neotropical Region, and showing an amphitropical distribution pattern (Michener 1979). The sixteen South American species of Centris (Paracentris) (Zanella 2002; Moure et al. 2007) occur in different biomes of the continent; such as low altitudes and valleys of Central Chile and Argentina (Roig-Alsina 2000; Vivallo et al. 2003), high altitudes of the Andes (they are specially diverse in this region) and with a few species in the low mountain chains and plains of Eastern Brazil (Zanella 2002). The subgenus was recently revised by Zanella (2002) and a new species from Central Peru is described here, which augments that revision.

Twelve species are recognized in the South American bat genus Myotis Kaup (Vespertilionidae, Myotinae), with several nominal forms currently regarded as synonyms, among them Myotis guaycuru Proença, 1943. Its holotype, so far the only specimen assigned to the species, has not been examined in recent taxonomic reviews. To address the taxonomic status of M. guaycuru, we located and redescribed its holotype and compared it to representatives and/or descriptions of all South American species in the genus. Qualitative traits, namely the plagiopatagium attached at ankles, the short and wooly fur and the lingually displaced P3, unambiguously assign the holotype of M. guaycuru to Myotis simus Thomas (1901). The analysis of cranial variation and pelage color across a wide geographical range of M. simus reveals morphometric and morphological discontinuity between Bolivian and Amazonian/Peruvian samples, the latter including topotypes of M. simus. The holotype of M. guaycuru was found to be morphometrically and morphologically more similar to these Amazonian samples than to the geographically nearer Bolivian sample, preventing the use of this nominal form to refer to the Bolivian population if its distinction suggested by morphometric analyses is confirmed by the analyses of other character systems.

Generic boundaries of the South American species Panicum longipedicellatum Swallen are explored and compared with allied genera of the tribe Paniceae. On the basis of morphological, anatomical, and molecular characters a new genus, Cnidochloa Zuloaga, is proposed. The phylogenetic position of the new genus within the Paniceae is evaluated.

AbstractThe bush dog Speothos venaticus, a rare Near Threatened South American canid that lives in packs, was thought to be extinct in Minas Gerais state, south-eastern Brazil, until recently. Here, we report four recent records of the species in Minas Gerais, the first in the state since the description of the species in 1842. All records are from the Cerrado ecosystem in the north and north-west of the state; two are from animals found dead, one from footprints and another from a camera trap. Three of the records were inside or close (< 10 km) to strict protected areas, in a region recognized as the Protected Areas Mosaic Sertão Veredas–Peruaçu, where we expect any new records of the bush dog to be found. We discuss the low probability of detecting the bush dog and the main regional threats to the species, and emphasize the need to protect large and interconnected natural areas and keep them free of domestic dogs to avoid the extinction of the bush dog in Minas Gerais.

A new South American species of Salacia (Celastraceae, Salacioideae) found in Colombia and Venezuela, Salacia fugax Lombardi & M.Serna is described here. It is characterized by its indument, small long acuminate leaves with short petioles, branched inflorescences, flowers with an annular-pulvinate disk, and small pyriform fruits. This new species resembles S. mennegana J.Hedin ex Lombardi and S. opacifolia (J.F.Macbr.) A.C.Sm. by its short petioles, leaf shape, slender branched inflorescence, perianth form, and similar disc, but S. fugax differs by its hairs, leaf size and apex, calyx, and fruit size and shape.

Mexican species of three pimpline genera, Apechthis Förster (one  species), Itoplectis Förster (six species) and Pimpla Fabricius (20 species, including one unidentified taxon), are reviewed. Four species of Pimpla are described as new to science: P. chamela sp. nov., P. oaxacana sp. nov., P. tequila sp. nov. and P. xalapana sp. nov. Pimpla thoracica Morley, 1914 is found to be a junior synonym of P. ellopiae Harrington, 1892 (syn. nov.). Apechthis zapoteca (Cresson) is recorded for the first time from Venezuela, Pimpla dimidiata (Townes) from Mexico, P. caeruleata Cresson, P. croceiventris (Cresson), P. sanguinipes Cresson and P. sumichrasti Cresson from Honduras, P. ichneumoniformis Cresson and P. viridescens Morley from Guatemala and Honduras, and P. punicipes Cresson from Panama. The South American species Pimpla caerulea Brullé and the Nearctic species P. pedalis Cresson are excluded from the Mexican fauna. Male of Itoplectis mexicana and female of Pimpla dimidiata are recorded for the first time. Identification keys to the species of Itoplectis and Pimpla occurring in Mexico are provided.
