The purpose of a competitor analysis is to provide managers with a complete picture of the competitive landscape confronting a firm. The core idea behind a competitor analysis is to use a systematic approach to (1) identify current and future rivals to a firm, (2) assess the strengths and weaknesses of current and future rivals, (3) determine a match between a competitor’s strategies and capabilities, (4) analyze the future plans and intentions of rivals, and (5) predict a competitor’s reaction to initiatives launched by a firm. The ability to anticipate the response by rivals provides a firm with a competitive advantage. This chapter discusses the underlying theory, core idea, depiction, process, insight or value created, and risks and limitations of competitor analysis. Finally, the chapter offers the illustration of Netflix and applies the steps of competitor analysis to this case.

The purpose of an S-curve analysis is to understand and interpret the evolution of a market, product, or technology so as to make informed strategic decisions about where value may be created now and in the future. S-curves map out this evolution, from its relatively slow emergence, to the point where it begins to grow and growth accelerates, to the point where the market becomes saturated and growth begins to slow and even decline. This chapter discusses the underlying theory, core idea, depiction, process, insight or value created, and risks and limitations of S-curve analysis. The chapter also discusses the illustration of Spotify and applies the steps of S-curve analysis to this case.

AbstractThough some managers question the success of loyalty programs (LPs), the core idea of leveraging information gained through loyalty initiatives remains stronger than ever. But as LP membership penetration reaches all-time highs, customers demand more value from LPs. LP managers should leverage opportunities that mobile devices offer in increasing the convenience and communication with LP members. The integration of LPs with digital payment systems like mobile wallets seems particularly promising. Another way to become more attractive is by forming partnerships with other companies at which customers can collect and/or redeem points. Such partnership LPs hold appeal for retailers, particularly if potential partners might benefit from synergies. In the future of linked data, companies further need to be more flexible in terms of the types of customer engagements that will be rewarded. Many companies already move towards rewarding not only on past transactions, but also activities on social media. In the digital age, customers still enjoy some form of loyalty rewarding and expect retailers to acknowledge their purchases as investments in relationships.

The purpose of VRIO analysis is to systematically identify resources and capabilities that may serve as a key source of competitive advantage. For a resource or capability to be the basis of a sustainable competitive advantage, it must be valuable (V), rare (R), and costly to imitate (I), and the firm must be organized (O) to capture the value from the resource or capability. This chapter discusses the underlying theory, core idea, depiction, process, insight or value created, and risks and limitations of VRIO analysis. Finally, the chapter continues the illustration of Harley-Davidson and applies the steps of VRIO analysis to this case.

Corpus-based studies have become increasingly common in linguistic typology over recent years, amounting to the emergence of a new field that we call corpus-based typology. The core idea of corpus-based typology is to take languages as populations of utterances and to systematically investigate text production across languages in this sense. From a usage-based perspective, investigations of variation and preferences of use are at the core of understanding the distribution of conventionalized structures and their diachronic development across languages. Specific findings of corpus-based typological studies pertain to universals of text production, for example, in prosodic partitioning; to cognitive biases constraining diverse patterns of use, for example, in constituent order; and to correlations of diverse patterns of use with language-specific structures and conventions. We also consider remaining challenges for corpus-based typology, in particular the development of crosslinguistically more representative corpora that include spoken (or signed) texts, and its vast potential in the future.

The future of modern philosophy of science and metaphilosophy. BORIS I. PRUZHININ (Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences) The article focuses on the future of the modern philosophy of science and is somewhat inspired by the discussion on the analytical version of metaphilosophy on the pages of «Epistemology and Philosophy of Science» (2019, vol. 56, no. 2). The selection of articles published in the issue generally gives a fairly complete picture of the conceptual abilities of the analytical metaphilosophical trend in thinking on the problems of modern philosophy. However, according to the author, both the metaphilosophical research and discussion of the representatives of analytic philosophy, in this case, are largely immersed in the «internal» problems of the analytic philosophy. That is, their reflection on the future of philosophy is reduced to the analysis of methods, associated with the turn of analytical tradition to metaphysical problems. As a result, the core question of «philosophy of philosophy» – what are the features of the changing reality that force us to look for new ways of its philosophical comprehension today – is actually ignored. According to the author, the philosophy of science is in need of the same kind of discussion because by now it has actually lost its connection with the reality of modern scientific practices. The article attempts to identify some metaphilosophical prospects of the modern philosophy of science that deserve consideration and reflection. Keywords: metaphilosophy, philosophy of philosophy, analytical philosophy, philosophy of science

To displace a character in time is to depict a character who becomes acutely conscious of his or her status as other, as she or he strives to comprehend and interact with a culture whose mentality is both familiar and different in obvious and subtle ways. Two main types of time travel pose a philosophical distinction between visiting the past with knowledge of the future and trying to inhabit the future with past cultural knowledge, but in either case the unpredictable impact a time traveller may have on another society is always a prominent theme. At the core of Japanese time travel narratives is a contrast between self-interested and eudaimonic life styles as these are reflected by the time traveller's activities. Eudaimonia is a ‘flourishing life’, a life focused on what is valuable for human beings and the grounding of that value in altruistic concern for others. In a study of multimodal narratives belonging to two sets – adaptations of Tsutsui Yasutaka's young adult novella The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Yamazaki Mari's manga series Thermae Romae – this article examines how time travel narratives in anime and live action film affirm that eudaimonic living is always a core value to be nurtured.

This article investigates human–nature relations in the light of the recent call for degrowth, a radical reduction of matter–energy throughput in over-producing and over-consuming cultures. It outlines a culturally sensitive response to a (conceived) paradox where humans embedded in nature experience alienation and estrangement from it. The article finds that if nature has a core, then the experienced distance makes sense. To describe the core of nature, three temporal lenses are employed: the core of nature as ‘the past’, ‘the future’, and ‘the present’. It is proposed that while the degrowth movement should be inclusive of temporal perspectives, the lens of the present should be emphasised to balance out the prevailing romanticism and futurism in the theory and practice of degrowth.
