Baker, Prof. Alan, (born 19 Aug. 1939), Professor of Pure Mathematics, University of Cambridge, 1974–2006, now Professor Emeritus; Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, since 1964

Gregory Maxwell (?Max') Kelly (1930?2007) was educated at the University of Sydney (BSc 1951 with First Class Honours, University Medal for Mathematics, Barker Prize, and James King of Irrawang Travelling Scholarship) and the University of Cambridge (BA 1953 with First Class Honours and two Wright's Prizes; Rayleigh Prize, 1955; PhD 1957). He returned to Australia as Lecturer in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sydney in 1957, became Senior Lecturer in 1961 and Reader in 1965. He was appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics first at the University of New South Wales in 1967 then at the University of Sydney in 1973, becoming Professor Emeritus in 1994. He introduced the mathematical discipline of category theory to Australia and continued active and influential research in the subject until the day of his death.

Professor Percy Groom was bom in 1865, and was educated at Mason College, Birmingham, and later at the University of Cambridge, where he was an Exhibitioner at Trinity College. He took Botany as his chief subject in the Tripos (part ii) and subsequently was elected to a Frank Smart Studentship at Caius College. He spent some time in Germany, attaching himself to the University of Bonn at the time when the School of Botany there was under the direction of the eminent Professor Strasburger, who was attracting many English and American students to wrork under him. Here he enjoyed the friendship of the keen band of assistants whom Strasburger had gathered round him, and notably that of A. F. W. Schimper who greatly influenced him in his outlook on botanical science.
