Effects of founder CEO duality and board size on foreign IPOs’ survival in US markets

Purpose This study aims to investigate how three critical governance decisions by foreign firms impacted their survivability post-initial public offerings (IPO): the choice of CEO (founder vs non-founder); the power the founder CEO wields relative to the board in terms of CEO duality; and board size. Design/methodology/approach This study uses data from 86 foreign firms that completed IPOs in the US market between 2000 and 2008 and adopts a Cox proportional hazards model to examine how the founder, founder CEO duality and board size influence foreign firm delisting post-IPO. Findings A founder CEO or a founder CEO with duality (i.e. when a founder CEO is also chair of the board of directors) does not support a foreign firm’s survival post-IPO. Expectedly, board size has a negative impact on post-IPO firm survivability; however, founder CEO duality positively moderates this negative relationship. Therefore, founder CEO duality plays a positive indirect role in the context of post-IPO firms with large boards. Originality/value First, while the benefits of CEO duality have been empirically ambiguous, this study clarifies how founder CEO duality manifests its positive impacts in foreign listings. Second, by focusing on board cognition, this study confirms the negative impact of large boards, but highlights that this can be mitigated by governance leadership structure. Finally, despite organizational life-cycle theorists’ advocacy of the replacement of founder CEOs with professional CEOs in sizable ventures, this study shows the benefits of their retention when the board is large.

Purpose Prior literature indicates that syndication enhances the likelihood of ventures’ successful exits; however, it has neglected the differences among venture capital (VC) investor types. In fact, there are various types of VC investors with distinctive objectives. Therefore, by focusing on ventures backed by corporate venture capital (CVC) and independent venture capital (IVC) investors, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how the relative influence among a heterogeneous group of VC investors in a syndicate affects the likelihood of the venture’s successful exit. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 1,121 US ventures that received funding from both CVC and IVC investors during 2001 and 2013 are collected. Then, a Cox proportional hazards model is applied to analyze the likelihood of a successful exit (i.e. initial public offering or acquisition). Findings The relative reputation of CVC investors vis-à-vis their IVC co-investors in a syndicate is negatively associated with the likelihood of the venture’s successful exit. This negative relationship is exacerbated when CVC investors are geographically close to the focal venture, and it is weakened when CVC investors syndicate with IVC investors that they have collaborated in the past. Originality/value First, this paper advances VC syndication literature by demonstrating that syndication does not positively affect the likelihood of a venture’s successful exit unless key syndicate members seek to pursue going public or acquisition strategy. Second, this paper also reveals when CVC is beneficial from the ventures’ perspective. CVC participation facilitates ventures’ successful exits as long as reputable IVC investors are present in the syndicate. Third, this study contributes to the multiple agency perspective by showing that formal governance mechanisms affect ventures’ conduct and performance as well as informal sources of power.

17010 Background: Negative impact of anemia on survival has been described in NSCLC patients (pts) treated with radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent radiochemotherapy, but scarcely data exist in NSCLC treated with chemotherapy (CT). PURPOUSE: To evaluate the prognosis value of baseline hemoglobin (Hb) among pts with advanced NSCLC treated with cisplatin and gemcitabine. Methods: 433 pts included in two trials conducted by the Spanish Lung Cancer Group (176 pts from the arm A of a randomized phase III trial comparing 3 regimens of CT and 257 pts from a phase II trial) were included in this analysis. No significant differences in baseline characteristics, response and survival (median 8.73 and 9.87 months, p=0.46) were observed between pts of the two trials. The baseline Hb and other potential risk factors for survival were analyzed with Cox Proportional Hazards model in an univariate an multivariate analysis. Results: Stage IIIB with positive pleural effusion (25%), stage IV (75%). 85% had ECOG PS 0–1. Median age: 60 years (range 31–82). 89% male. Histology: 41% adenocarcinoma, 39% squamous cell, 6.5% large cell, 14.5% NSCLC not otherwise specified. Median number of cycles received was 4 (range 1–8). Mean Hb level prior CT was 13.2 g/dl (range 8 to 19.6 g/dl). Response rate was 41% and median survival was 9.57 months (95% CI: 8.57–11–57). No statistically differences in survival were observed by stage (IIIB vs IV), age and gender. In the univariate analysis, number of cycles received (≤3 vs. >3 cycles), ECOG (2 vs 0–1), response (SD+PD vs CR+PR), baseline Hb (≤11 vs >11 gr/dl); minimum Hb during the CT (<10 vs ≥10) and second line CT (No vs Yes) emerged as prognostic factors for survival and were introduced in the multivariate model (see Table ). Conclusions: Hb level at the initiation of CT is an independent prognostic factor of survival this homogenous group of advanced NSCLC treated with cisplatin and gemcitabine. Baseline Hb should be considered as prognosis factor for survival in addition to ECOG. [Table: see text] No significant financial relationships to disclose.

499 Background: In addition to Bevacizumab+Interferon, current treatment options of mRCC imply two major intracellular modes of action and thus classes of therapies: the four approved tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) Sunitinib, Sorafenib, Pazopanib, Axitinib and the two inhibitors of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) Temsirolimus, Everolimus (EVE). With their availability efficacy of sequential treatment has become a central question of clinical research. While clinical trials recruit highly selected patients (pts) and usually focus on a single line of therapy, collected data of clinical registries may represent all patients and all sequential therapies. Methods: Starting in 12/2007 the registry aims to enrol a total of 1500 patients from more than 120 oncology and urology outpatient centres collecting data on all systemic treatments, outcome, patient and tumour characteristics. Here, the effectiveness of two 1st – 2nd-line sequential treatments, TKI–TKI vs TKI–EVE, was investigated with a multivariate cox proportional hazards model considering potential confounding variables (age, comorbidity, body mass index (BMI), duration of 1st-line therapy, Motzer’s score and type of sequential treatment). Results: At the time of analysis, 481 pts had received sequential 1st- and 2nd-line treatment between 2007 and 2012. In total, 70% of pts received 1st-line TKI-treatment. 46% of these pts received the sequential treatment TKI–TKI, 25% received TKI–EVE. In the multivariate analysis, high BMI (HR 0.946, 95% CI 0.9018-0.9923, p<.05) and a long duration of 1st-line-therapy (HR 0.9967, 95% CI 0.9956-0.9979, p<.001) had a significant positive impact on OS, whereas high risk Motzer`s score (HR 8.9992, 95% CI 2.4231-33.4228, p<.01) had a significant negative impact on OS. However, the type of sequential treatment had no impact on OS (HR 1.0658, 95% CI0.6463-1.7576, p=0.802). Conclusions: The RCC Registry provides an overview of the current treatment reality in routine medical practice. TKI are the most frequently applied 1st-line treatments, followed by TKI or mTOR inhibitors. Our data show no difference concerning the effectiveness of the sequential treatment TKI–TKI vs TKI–EVE.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the market liquidity (time-on-market (TOM)) and its determinants, for rental dwellings in the largest seven German cities, with big data. Design/methodology/approach The determinants of TOM are estimated with the Cox proportional hazards model. Hedonic characteristics, as well as socioeconomic and spatial variables, are combined with different fixed effects and controls for non-linearity, so as to maximise the explanatory power of the model. Findings Higher asking rent and larger living space decrease the liquidity in all seven markets, while the age of a dwelling, the number of rooms and proximity to the city centre accelerate the letting process. For the other hedonic characteristics heterogeneous implications emerge. Practical implications The findings are of interest for institutional and private landlords, as well as governmental organisations in charge of housing and urban development. Originality/value This is the first paper to deal with the liquidity of rental dwellings in the seven most populated cities of Europe’s second largest rental market, by applying the Cox proportional hazards model with spatial gravity variables. Furthermore, the German rental market is of particular interest, as approximately 60 per cent of all rental dwellings are owned by private landlords and the German market is organised polycentrically.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine which individual traits of financial advisors influence portfolio transfer speed when a financial advisor recommends investors to migrate to a new financial intermediary. Design/methodology/approach With reference to the years 2014–2016, one of the three leading Italian tied-agent banks provided the authors with an exclusive and unique data set containing information regarding the financial advisors who had become tied agents, transferring their existing portfolios from their previous banks (traditional or tied-agent banks). The authors observed the ability of the migrant financial advisor in successfully transferring the entire portfolio declared within 12 months of observation. To investigate empirically which personal traits of financial advisors determine their success in the rapid transfer of clients’ portfolios to a new financial intermediary, the authors applied a Cox proportional hazards model. Findings The authors find that factors such as age, type of bank of origin and size of the managed financial portfolio positively affect the speed transfer. Practical implications The obtained results may be interesting for guiding recruiting policies of financial intermediaries. Social implications Regulators should closely examine the phenomenon analyzed in this paper to avoid conflict of interests. Originality/value The literature on this topic is scarce, mainly due to the lack of available data. This paper represents an original contribution to open a new field of research.

ABSTRACTPseudomonas aeruginosabacteremia is associated with high hospital mortality. Empirical combination therapy is commonly used to increase the likelihood of appropriate therapy, but the benefits of employing >1 active agent have yet to be established. The purpose of this study was to compare outcomes of patients receiving appropriate empirical combination versus monotherapy forP. aeruginosabacteremia. This was a retrospective, multicenter, cohort study of hospitalized adult patients withP. aeruginosabacteremia from 2002 to 2011. The primary endpoint (30-day mortality) was assessed using multivariate logistic regression, adjusting for underlying confounding variables. Secondary endpoints of hospital mortality and time to mortality were assessed by Fisher's exact test and the Cox proportional hazards model, respectively. A total of 384 patients were analyzed. Thirty-day mortality was higher for patients receiving inappropriate therapy than for those receiving appropriate empirical therapy (43.8% versus 21.5%;P= 0.03). However, there were no statistical differences in 30-day mortality following appropriate empirical combination versus monotherapy after adjusting for baseline APACHE II scores and lengths of hospital stay prior to the onset of bacteremia (P= 0.55). Observed hospital mortality was 36.6% for patients administered combination therapy, compared with 28.7% for monotherapy patients (P= 0.17). After adjusting for baseline APACHE II scores, the relationship between time to mortality and combination therapy was not statistically significant (P= 0.59). Overall, no significant differences were observed for 30-day mortality, hospital mortality, and time to mortality between combination and monotherapy forP. aeruginosabacteremia. Empirical combination therapy did not appear to offer an additional benefit, as long as the isolate was susceptible to at least one antimicrobial agent.

Purpose: To investigate if morphological patterns of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) venous lesions affect primary patency after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA). Methods: From July 2014 to June 2015, 262 patients underwent PTA for failed AVFs. A total of 104 patients were excluded owing to (1) calcification or AVF occlusion precluding ultrasound examination, (2) central venous or arterial lesions, and (3) no follow-up, leaving 158 patients (mean age 71±12; 96 men) for analysis. More than half of the patients had one or more previous PTAs for the failed AVF. Prior to PTA the stenotic lesions were assessed using ultrasonography to determine stenotic patterns at the minimum lumen area site and to evaluate the flow volume in the brachial artery. Three stenotic patterns were identified: intimal hyperplasia (IH) stenosis (n=110), shrinking lumen stenosis (n=32), and venous valve–related stenosis (n=16). The main outcome measure was primary patency after PTA estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Predictors for loss of primary patency were determined using a multivariate Cox proportional hazards model; the results are presented as the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Median follow-up after PTA was 6.3 months (interquartile range 3.3, 10.5). The 6-month primary patency estimates were 56%±5% in the IH group, 40±9% in the shrinking lumen group, and 100% in the valve stenosis group (IH vs shrinking, p=0.013; IH vs valve, p=0.003). In multivariate analysis, shrinking lumen morphology had a negative impact on primary patency (HR 2.05, 95% CI 1.25 to 3.36, p=0.005), while venous valve–related stenosis had a positive impact (HR 0.19, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.79, p=0.023). Flow volume (10-mL/min increments; HR 0.97, 95% CI 0.96 to 0.99, p=0.004) and history of PTA (HR 1.66, 95% CI 1.06 to 2.60, p=0.029) were also independently associated with primary patency after PTA. Conclusion: The patterns of AVF stenosis as determined by ultrasound can affect the outcome of treatment with balloon dilation.

Abstract. Background: We investigated the age at exposure to parental suicide and the risk of subsequent suicide completion in young people. The impact of parental and offspring sex was also examined. Method: Using a cohort study design, we linked Taiwan's Birth Registry (1978–1997) with Taiwan's Death Registry (1985–2009) and identified 40,249 children who had experienced maternal suicide (n = 14,431), paternal suicide (n = 26,887), or the suicide of both parents (n = 281). Each exposed child was matched to 10 children of the same sex and birth year whose parents were still alive. This yielded a total of 398,081 children for our non-exposed cohort. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to compare the suicide risk of the exposed and non-exposed groups. Results: Compared with the non-exposed group, offspring who were exposed to parental suicide were 3.91 times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 3.10–4.92 more likely to die by suicide after adjusting for baseline characteristics. The risk of suicide seemed to be lower in older male offspring (HR = 3.94, 95% CI = 2.57–6.06), but higher in older female offspring (HR = 5.30, 95% CI = 3.05–9.22). Stratified analyses based on parental sex revealed similar patterns as the combined analysis. Limitations: As only register-­based data were used, we were not able to explore the impact of variables not contained in the data set, such as the role of mental illness. Conclusion: Our findings suggest a prominent elevation in the risk of suicide among offspring who lost their parents to suicide. The risk elevation differed according to the sex of the afflicted offspring as well as to their age at exposure.

OBJECTIVEThe aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between extent of resection (EOR) and survival in terms of clinical, molecular, and radiological factors in high-grade astrocytoma (HGA).METHODSClinical and radiological data from 585 cases of molecularly defined HGA were reviewed. In each case, the EOR was evaluated twice: once according to contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images (CE-T1WI) and once according to fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. The ratio of the volume of the region of abnormality in CE-T1WI to that in FLAIR images (VFLAIR/VCE-T1WI) was calculated and a receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the optimal cutoff value for that ratio. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the prognostic value of each factor.RESULTSBoth the EOR evaluated from CE-T1WI and the EOR evaluated from FLAIR could divide the whole cohort into 4 subgroups with different survival outcomes (p < 0.001). Cases were stratified into 2 subtypes based on VFLAIR/VCE-T1WIwith a cutoff of 10: a proliferation-dominant subtype and a diffusion-dominant subtype. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a significant survival advantage for the proliferation-dominant subtype (p < 0.0001). The prognostic implication has been further confirmed in the Cox proportional hazards model (HR 1.105, 95% CI 1.078–1.134, p < 0.0001). The survival of patients with proliferation-dominant HGA was significantly prolonged in association with extensive resection of the FLAIR abnormality region beyond contrast-enhancing tumor (p = 0.03), while no survival benefit was observed in association with the extensive resection in the diffusion-dominant subtype (p=0.86).CONCLUSIONSVFLAIR/VCE-T1WIis an important classifier that could divide the HGA into 2 subtypes with distinct invasive features. Patients with proliferation-dominant HGA can benefit from extensive resection of the FLAIR abnormality region, which provides the theoretical basis for a personalized resection strategy.

OBJECTIVEWhile it has been established that lumbar discectomy should only be performed after a certain waiting period unless neurological deficits are present, little is known about the association of late surgery with outcome. Using data from a prospective registry, the authors aimed to quantify the association of time to surgery (TTS) with leg pain outcome after lumbar discectomy and to identify a maximum TTS cutoff anchored to the minimum clinically important difference (MCID).METHODSTTS was defined as the time from the onset of leg pain caused by radiculopathy to the time of surgery in weeks. MCID was defined as a minimum 30% reduction in the numeric rating scale score for leg pain from baseline to 12 months. A Cox proportional hazards model was utilized to quantify the association of TTS with MCID. Maximum TTS cutoffs were derived both quantitatively, anchored to the area under the curve (AUC), and qualitatively, based on cutoff-specific MCID rates.RESULTSFrom a prospective registry, 372 patients who had undergone first-time tubular microdiscectomy were identified; 308 of these patients (83%) obtained an MCID. Attaining an MCID was associated with a shorter TTS (HR 0.718, 95% CI 0.546–0.945, p = 0.018). Effect size was preserved after adjustment for potential confounders. The optimal maximum TTS was estimated at 23.5 weeks based on the AUC, while the cutoff-specific method suggested 24 weeks. Discectomy after this cutoff starts to yield MCID rates under 80%. The 24-week cutoff also coincided with the time point after which the specificity for MCID first drops below 50% and after which the negative predictive value for nonattainment of MCID first surpasses ≥ 20%.CONCLUSIONSThe study findings suggest that late lumbar discectomy is linked with poorer patient-reported outcomes and that—in accordance with the literature—a maximum TTS of 6 months should be aimed for.
