Effects of green tea ( Camellia sinensis ) and guava ( Psidium guajava) extracts on the quality of snakehead (Channa striata) fillets during ice storage

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of Psidium guajava leaves extract on the quality of cobia (Rachycentron canadum) fillets during in ice storage. A group of cobia fillets was soaked in Psidium guajava extract solutions at concentration of 0.03% (w/v) for 30 minutes while the other group soaked in cold ice water, considered as control treatment. The experimental fillets were packed and stored in ice for 15 days. Sampling were done on the 1st, 5th, 10th and 15th day. Analyzed parameters included temperature, total viable counts (TVC), sensory property, pH, moisture, water holding capacity (WHC), texture, total volatile base nitrogen (TVB–N), peroxide value (PV), Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), and fillet color. The results indicated that cobia fillets treated with guava extract solutions 0.03% showed significantly higher sensory property, lower PV and TBARs compared to the control treatment during ice storage. Based on the sensory property and total viable counts, cobia fillets can be used up to 10 days in both treatments remaining high quality of the cobia fillet.

SUMMARYTwo-year-old tea bushes were given NPK fertilizer on 12 November 1986 and 14CO2 on 22–23 December 1986 and 9–10 January 1987. Late-autumn fertilizer dressing stimulated photosynthate accumulation in the whole bush, especially in overwintering leaves and roots. Large amounts of photosynthates in overwintering leaves provide the nutrition required for early spring budding. Lateautumn dressing also accelerated the transport of photosynthates from leaves to roots in winter, where photosynthates, with absorbed nitrogen, synthesized more animo acids, especially theanine and phenylalanine. The re-use of photosynthates stored in the roots of the dressed bushes during shoot growth the following spring was also facilitated by late-autumn dressing. The contents of amino acids and caffeine in the shoots of dressed bushes were much higher than those in the control, whereas the content of polyphenol was lower than in the control. The results indicate that late-autumn dressing improves the quality of spring green tea.

The effects of the added β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in the tea infusion extraction on color quality of green tea (Camellia sinensis) infusion have been investigated in detail. Due to the added β-CD, the color of the tea infusion can be brightened effectively, and meanwhile, compared to conventional extraction, the retentions of tea polyphenols, catechins, and chlorophyll have also been proved to be increased greatly. Furthermore, the additive β-CD can also increase the viscosity of the tea infusion. In addition, the existing β-CD can lower the oxygen solubility ratio in tea infusions effectively, from which a high-quality tea infusion can be prepared ready for further processing.

Background: Tea (Camellia sinensis, Theaceae) is the second most consumed beverage in the world. Green tea is the least processed and thus contain rich antioxidant level, and believed to have most of the health benefits. </p><p> Methods: We commenced to search bibliographic collection of peer reviewed research articles and review articles to meet the objective of this study. </p><p> Results: From this study, we found that the tea beverage contains catechins are believed to have a wide range of health benefits which includes neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-parasitic effects. The four major catechin compounds of green tea are epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and epicatechin gallate (ECG), of which EGCG is the major constituent and representing 50-80% of the total catechin content. And also contain xanthine derivatives such as caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine, and the glutamide derivative theanine. It also contains many nutritional components, such as vitamin E, vitamin C, fluoride, and potassium. We sum up the various green tea phytoconstituents, extraction methods, and its medicinal applications. </p><p> Conclusion: In this review article, we have summarized the pharmacological importance of green tea catechin which includes antioxidant potential, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, antidiabetic and cosmetic application.
