The university city of Cluj-Napoca in Romania is one of the clearest examples where ‘the night’ (including restaurants, bars, discotheques, clubs, and also museums, exhibitions, and theatres) has been essential for the vitality of the city. Despite the importance of ‘the night’ for the everyday life of the city, the role of the night-time leisure economy in the social and urban change of European post-socialist cities remains underexplored. Based on mixed research methods, this paper aims to examine the recent development of the night-time leisure economy of Cluj-Napoca. After a theoretical approach in which we highlight the long underexplored path that still exists in relation to the study on the political, social, cultural and economic factors of ’the night’ in post-socialist cities from South-Eastern Europe, the paper shows a quantitative approach about a range of variables that define the different (and unequal) forms of consuming the night in the city centre of Cluj-Napoca. The second part of the paper shows the results derived from the quantitative study about the different perceptions and visions that employees, residents, venue owners, and municipals have about nightlife in Cluj-Napoca. The paper concludes by suggesting that a greater institutional attention should be provided to the development of the night-time leisure economy in the city centre of Cluj-Napoca in order to avoid the reproduction of 'segmented nightscapes' that highly feature the night in Central and Western Europe.

In the 1970s it was argued that suburban centres in the US had developed into “minicities”, offering a wide range of possibilities for consumption, cultural events and a sense of the urban. In this article we explore to which extent this description of minicities may be valid in two cases in the suburban hinterland of Oslo. We further discuss whether the “urbanization” of these suburban centres may contribute to a more sustainable urban development, with respect to everyday travel. We conclude that the growth of these minicities may reduce car travel, either because of their excellent public transport connection to the (big) city centre and other nodes in the increasingly decentralized urban region, or because they may serve as a substitute for the city centre. However, an empirical investigation of the role of minicities must be based on a deeper understanding of the social and cultural processes that guide the everyday life of today’s sub­urbanites.

In Chennai, Development-Induced Displacement and Resettlement (DIDR) pushes the urban poor to resettlement sites in the outskirts of the city. One of those sites is Kannagi Nagar, located 15 km from the city centre, in which women suffer from more significant livelihood deprivation. As there is evidence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) being useful in development, this study aims to explain the role of ICT in the livelihood restoration and enhancement of the social and financial capital for women in Kannagi Nagar. Through a case study with a blend of quantitative and qualitative techniques, the research incorporated a closed-ended questionnaire survey and interviews. Among the women, ICT use is prevalent, however, they have not fully optimized the potentials of ICT for livelihood restoration. The use is still limited to the purpose of maintaining the contacts they already have. However, some women have been able to use ICT, especially through their phones, for the restoration and enhancement of their social and financial capital. Nonetheless, to harness the full potential of ICT and strengthen women’s agency, access to ICT should be improved.

The competition for international students is growing among both different countries and universities within one country. Regional universities in Russia, meaning those outside Moscow and Saint Petersburg, try to use internationalization in order to contribute to the development of their regions. However, a high level of academic mobility is usually ensured by comfortable living conditions that both the university and the city the university is situated in provide. The article covers the role of the city as the factor that may contribute to higher education internationalization. The research is based on the perception of certain university cities that international students living there have. Taking into account the ideas of Machlup, Florida, and Castells, the authors consider universities the key actors of university cities development in Siberia. Thus, two Siberian university cities included in the QS Best Student Cities ranking, namely, Tomsk and Novosibirsk, were considered in the research. To evaluate their role in international students’ choice for their universities, international students in Tomsk and Novosibirsk universities were interviewed during 2018-2020. To compare the results with the international dimension of higher education internationalization, Russian students studying in France were also interviewed. As a result, the criteria of the university choice were determined that are connected with the university city characteristics. The latter include security considerations, cultural diversity and social environment tolerance, aesthetic attractiveness of the city and its sightseeing opportunities, developed transportation system, high concentration of international students, open and accessible communicative environment. However, the criteria international students chose Siberian university cities for included lower prices for education and lower living costs. The main disadvantage is the lack of comfortable communication zones that do not depend on climate. The priorities of international students in large and small university cities turned out to differ: the latter tend to value the quality of university and the city’s historical values as well as personified relations with the locals more. Comparing the opinion of Russian and international students on significant criteria of university cities, the authors found out that international students were less critical to such characteristics of Tomsk and Novosibirsk as security, tolerance and accessibility for disabled people. However, international students were more critical to the number of students in the city. Thus, the creation of comfortable and attractive conditions for international students is the common responsibility of the university, the city and the region.

On the example of three Prague subcentres Budějovická, Pankrác and Smíchov this paper analyses the structure of socially stratified environment of secondary city centres in Prague. The development is discussed within the context of requirements upon the public space in the stage of tertiarization and post-socialist transformation of the urban society. The influx of investments into the local environment of city centres is changing the space patterns and causes changes in the social structure of users. As result, the area of centres is split into functional entities with different social constituency. An active role of public administration is important for preservation of city-centre functionality for most inhabitants of the city.

ABSTRACT        Objective: analyze the opinion of users assisted in the CAPS in the city of Camaragibe/Pernambuco, about the way the social reinsertion is approached in the psychiatrics hospitals and substitutive services. Method: it is a research with quantitative approach, done with 33 users in treatment in the regimen non intensive in CAPS, having among other criteria of inclusion, users, with historic of internship in psychiatric hospitals. Data were collected through questionnaire, which were tabulated in Excel and analyzed with the aid of SPSS 15.0 program. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Oswaldo Cruz (protocol number 005/08). Results: the users interviewed perceived the CAPS as a service that contributes for the reinsertion in the family and in the community. In this therapeutic set, they receive qualifications to develop financial autonomy, while in the closed hospitals does not seem to exist such worry. Conclusion:  it can be perceived that the users interviewee have clarity about the role of the CAPS, that is revealed as an efficient strategy in the treatment of people with mental disease, because besides doing the clinical attendance, it facilitates the social insertion of their users. Os dados foram coletados por meio de questionário, os quais foram tabulados no Excel e analisados com o auxílio do programa SPSS 15.0. Estudo aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa do Hospital Universitário Oswaldo Cruz (número de protocolo 005/08). Resultados: os usuários entrevistados perceberam o CAPS como um serviço que contribui para a reinserção na família e na comunidade. Nesse set terapêutico, eles recebem capacitações para desenvolverem autonomia financeira, enquanto que nos hospitais fechados não lhes parece existir tal preocupação. Conclusões: percebe-se que os usuários entrevistados têm clareza sobre o papel do CAPS, que se revela como uma estratégia eficaz no tratamento de pessoas com transtorno mental, pois além de realizar o acompanhamento clínico, favorece a reinserção social dos seus usuários. The article is devoted to the role of students in the local public policy of modern Russia. The specifics of students are justified by their social activities, which are supported by territorial concentration, community of interests, group self-consciousness, subculture, lifestyle, age homogeneity, which other social and professional groups do not have. The authors explain the possibility of students' participation in the public policy of the city by the provisions of the state youth policy of the Russian Federation, as well as by their status of full-fledged residents of a particular territory. Analyzing the socio-political activity of students, they conclude that as socially significant problems students can promote in the field of public policy interests related to their social status (benefits, scholarships, tuition fees, etc.), the organization of urban infrastructure (transport, social services, urban amenities, etc.), as well as their self-fulfillment and self-expression, which is manifested in their creative activity, appearance, behavior, etc. Local public policy in the logic of the research is a process of interaction between several actors to develop a joint solution to a socially significant problem, which is impossible to solve by usual procedures. Interactions of the actors form the field of public policy, and each of them tries to realize its own interest, using its own resources and agents for this purpose. Hence the main question of the research: who does the student act as, being a participant of the relationship "student-university-city"? The authors of the article have tried to construct various models characterizing the role of students in the field of public policy, which also involves the university and the city. Each theoretical model is illustrated by cases from Samara, Krasnoyarsk and Kazan.

This article is part of the special cluster titled Bukovina and Bukovinians after the Second World War: (Re)shaping and (re)thinking a region after genocide and ‘ethnic unmixing’, guest edited by Gaëlle Fisher and Maren Röger. This article explores ways in which Habsburg nostalgia has become an important factor in contemporary place-making strategies in the city of Chernivtsi, Western Ukraine. Through the analysis of diasporic homecomings, city center revitalization, and nationalist rhetoric surrounding the politics of monuments, I explore hybrid and diverse ways in which Habsburg nostalgia operates in a given setting. Rather than a static and homogenous form of place attachment, in Chernivtsi different cultural practices associated with Habsburg nostalgia coexist with each other and depending on the political context as well as the social position of the “nostalgic agents” manifest themselves differently. Drawing from my long-term ethnographic fieldwork, I argue that in order to fully understand individuals’ attachment to space, it is necessary to grasp both the subtle emotional ways in which the city is experienced by individuals as well as problematize the role of the built environment in the visualization of collective memory and emotions of particular groups. The focus on changing manifestations of the Habsburg nostalgia can bring then a better understanding of the range and scope of the city’s symbolic resources that might be mobilized for various purposes.

The field of theology and development is a relatively new sub-discipline within theological studies in Africa. The first formal post-graduate programme was introduced at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa during the mid-1990s. In the early years it was known as the Leadership and Development programme and since 2000, as the Theology and Development programme. Over the past twenty years, this programme has graduated over 160 BTh Honours, 100 MTh, and 15 PhD students. This article outlines the history of the programme, addresses its ideological orientation, its pedagogical commitments and preferences in curriculum design. It further argues that theological reflection on “development” must seek to understand the prophetic role of the church in responding to the complexities of the social issues facing the African continent.  Key to this discussion is the contested nature of “development” and the need for theological perspectives to engage this contestation through a social analysis of the global structures of injustice. This requires an engagement with the social sciences. It is this engagement of the social sciences with theological reflection, the essay argues, that has enabled the students who have graduated from the Theology and Development Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal to assist the church and faith-based organisations to become effective agents of social transformation.

Sebagai kota yang dibangun dengan mempertimbangkan aspek kosmologis, alun-alun merupakan salah satu elemen pembentuk Kota Bandung sejak menjadi pusat pemerintahan Kabupaten Bandung pada 25 September 1810. Alun-alun Kota Bandung mengalami perubahan fungsi, dari titik batas ruang profan dan ruang sakral menjadi ruang terbuka publik sehingga makna filosofisnya mengalami pergeseran. Untuk memahami perubahan tersebut secara kronologis, dilakukan penelitian historis dengan menerapkan metode sejarah yang terdiri dari empat tahap, yaitu heuristik, kritik, interpretasi, dan historiografi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam perkembangannya, warga Kota Bandung tidak lagi memandang alun-alun sebagai salah satu elemen penyeimbang antara makrokosmos dan mikrokosmos, melainkan sebagai ruang terbuka publik tempat bersosialisasi seluruh warga kota. Fungsi Alun-alun Kota Bandung menunjukkan perubahan, dari sebuah lapangan terbuka dengan fungsi administratif kota tradisional hingga menjadi sebuah taman kota yang menjadi destinasi wisata di pusat kota sehingga memperlihatkan fungsi sosial-ekonomi.As a city that was built which takes the cosmological aspect into consideration, the square is one of the elements that formed the city of Bandung since becoming the capital of Bandung Regency on September 25, 1810. Its changing functions, which were traditionally perceived as a boundary of profane and sacred space into modern public open space, reflected a shifting in philosophical meaning. To understand the changes chronologically, this paper uses historical method which consists of four stages, namely, heuristics, critique, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that gradually the citizens of Bandung no longer look at the city square as one of the elements of the balance between the macrocosm and microcosm, but rather as a place for community gatherings. Its function changes from an open field with the administrative role of the traditional city into a city park that became a tourist destination in the city centre with socio-economic functions.

Trabalhos desenvolvidos em equipes multidisciplinares devem ser rotina para os futuros egressos do curso de direito. O objetivo desse artigo é discutir algumas estratégias e planos de trabalho utilizados no Programa de Educação Tutorial Conexões de Saberes que envolve estudantes do curso de direito da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro no campus de Três Rios, interior do Rio de Janeiro. Nessa perspectiva, o engajamento dos estudantes em projetos do tem contribuído como um campo experimental para o desenvolvimento das habilidades necessárias aos bacharéis em direito, bem como para a percepção do papel social do futuro profissional. Desde 2014, a equipe desenvolve projetos que discutem a função da universidade junto à comunidade, abordando sobretudo questões relacionadas a grupos vulneráveis e a aspectos agroambientais.Palavras-chave: aprendizagem significativa; formação integradora; projetos na graduação. Abstract Work performed in multidisciplinary teams should be routine for future graduates of the law courses. The aim of this paper is to discuss some strategies and work plans used in the Connections of Knowledge Tutorial Program that involves law students of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro on the campus of Três Rios, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro. In this perspective, students' engagement in projects has contributed as an experimental field for the development of the skills required by law graduates, as well as for the perception of the social role of the professional future. Since 2014, the team has developed projects that discuss the role of the university in the community, addressing issues related to vulnerable groups and agro-environmental aspects.
