Numerical Simulation of Heavy Particle Dispersion Time Step and Nonlinear Drag Considerations

Numerical experiments can be used to study heavy particle dispersion by tracking particles through a numerically generated instantaneous turbulent flow field. In this manner, data can be generated to supplement physical experiments. To perform the numerical experiments efficiently and accurately, the time step used when tracking the particles through the fluid must be chosen correctly. After finding a suitable time step for one particular simulation, the time step must be reduced as the total integration time increases and as the free-fall velocity of the particle increases. Based on the numerical calculations, we suggest that the nonlinear drag be included in a numerical simulation if the ratio of the particle’s Stokes free-fall velocity to the fluid rms velocity is greater than two.

Lagrangian statistical quantities related to the dispersion of heavy particles were studied numerically by following particle trajectories in a random flow generated by Fourier modes. An experimental fluid velocity correlation was incorporated into the flow. Numerical simulation was performed with the use of nonlinear drag. The simulation results for glass beads in a nondecaying turbulent air showed a difference between the horizontal dispersion coefficient and vertical dispersion coefficient. This difference was related to the differences of both the velocity scale and the time scale between the two direction. It was shown that for relatively small particle sizes the particle time scale ratio dominates the value of the diffusivity ratio. For large particles, the velocity scale ratio reaches a value of 1/2 and thus fully determines the diffusivity ratio. Qualitative explanation was provided to support the numerical findings. The dispersion data for heavy particles in grid-generated turbulences were successfully predicted by the simulation when flow decay was considered. As a result of the reduction in effective inertia and the increase in effective drift caused by the flow decay, the particle dispersion coefficient in decaying flow decreases with downstream location. The particle rms fluctuation velocity has a slower decay rate than the fluid rms velocity if the drift parameter is large. It was also found that the drift may substantially reduce the particle rms velocity.

The global integration time step of multi-scale model is subject to local detailed model, resulting in lower computational efficiency. Mixed time integration method uses different integration time-step in different scale model, it can effectively avoid the above problem. Rest on a large-scale water tunnel under construction, in order to achieve the synchronization of the global and the local simulation, the paper establishes multi-scale finite element model of the tunnel, and calculate it by mixed time integration method. The final calculation and analysis show that the algorithm can guarantee the computational accuracy of multi-scale numerical simulation, and can effectively improve the computational efficiency, it can also provide references for related tunnel project.

In order to study the influence of an integration time step on dynamic calculation of a vehicle-track-bridge under high-speed railway, a vehicle-track-bridge (VTB) coupled model is established. The influence of the integration time step on calculation accuracy and calculation stability under different speeds or different track regularity states is studied. The influence of the track irregularity on the integration time step is further analyzed by using the spectral characteristic of sensitive wavelength. According to the results, the disparity among the effect of the integration time step on the calculation accuracy of the VTB coupled model at different speeds is very small. Higher speed requires a smaller integration time step to keep the calculation results stable. The effect of the integration time step on the calculation stability of the maximum vertical acceleration of each component at different speeds is somewhat different, and the mechanism of the effect of the integration time step on the calculation stability of the vehicle-track-bridge coupled system is that corresponding displacement at the integration time step is different. The calculation deviation of the maximum vertical acceleration of the car body, wheel-sets and bridge under the track short wave irregularity state are greatly increased compared with that without track irregularity. The maximum vertical acceleration of wheel-sets, rails, track slabs and the bridge under the track short wave irregularity state all show a significant declining trend. The larger the vibration frequency is, the smaller the range of integration time step is for dynamic calculation.

Aiming at the simulation of dense granular flows, we propose and test a numerical method based on successive convex complementarity problems. This approach originates from a multibody description of the granular flow: all the particles are simulated as rigid bodies with arbitrary shapes and frictional contacts. Unlike the discrete element method (DEM), the proposed approach does not require small integration time steps typical of stiff particle interaction; this fact, together with the development of optimized algorithms that can run also on parallel computing architectures, allows an efficient application of the proposed methodology to granular flows with a large number of particles. We present an application to the analysis of the refueling flow in pebble-bed nuclear reactors. Extensive validation of our method against both DEM and physical experiments results indicates that essential collective characteristics of dense granular flow are accurately predicted.

AbstractRadio snapshot imaging is an efficient observing method which allows several sources to be observed in the one session. Snapshot observing with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) involves special difficulties, as the small number of antennas combined with the short total integration time leads to high sidelobe levels in the raw images. The images can be improved markedly by standard deconvolution techniques, but more care is required in their use because of the difficulty in distinguishing real emission from artefacts. This study, based on a set of snapshot observations of strong sources at 5 GHz, gives guidance on both the planning of observations and the data reduction. We show that snapshot imaging with the 6 km ATCA can achieve a dynamic range of 100–200:1 provided certain conditions are met, namely a peak flux density > 100 mJy, an angular size ≤ 30″ and an hour-angle coverage spanning at least six well-separated 5-minute cuts. When observing weak sources it is essential for calibration sources to be selected carefully and observed frequently.

<p>Landslide-generated waves have been major threats to coastal areas and have led to destruction and casualties. Their importance is undisputed, most recently demonstrated by the 2018 Anak Krakatau tsunami, causing several hundred fatalities. The accurate prediction of the maximum initial amplitude of landslide waves (<em>η<sub>max</sub></em>) around the source region is a vital hazard indicator for coastal impact assessment. Laboratory experiments, analytical solutions and numerical modelling are three major methods to investigate the (<em>η<sub>max</sub></em>). However, the numerical modelling approach provides a more flexible and cost- and time-efficient tool. This research presents a numerical simulation of tsunamis due to rigid landslides with consideration of submerged conditions. In particular, this simulation focuses on studying the effect of landslide parameters on <em>η<sub>max</sub>.</em> Results of simulations are compared with our conducted physical experiments at the Brunel University London (UK) to validate the numerical model.</p><p>We employ the fully three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics package, FLOW-3D Hydro for modelling the landslide-generated waves. This software benefit from the Volume of Fluid Method (VOF) as the numerical technique for tracking and locating the free surface. The geometry of the simulation is set up according to the wave tank of physical experiments (i.e. 0.26 m wide, 0.50 m deep and 4.0 m). In order to calibrate the simulation model based on the laboratory measurements, the friction coefficient between solid block and incline is changed to 0.41; likewise, the terminal velocity of the landslide is set to 0.87 m/s. Good agreement between the numerical solutions and the experimental results is found. Sensitivity analyses of landslide parameters (e.g. slide volume, water depth, etc.) on <em>η<sub>max </sub></em>are performed. Dimensionless parameters are employed to study the sensitivity of the initial landslide waves to various landslide parameters.</p>

Based on the analytical solution of one-dimensional simplified equation of damping tidal wave and Heuristic stability analysis, the precision of numerical solution, computational time and the relationship between the numerical dissipation and the friction dissipation are discussed with different numerical schemes in this paper. The results show that (1) when Courant number is less than unity, the explicit solution of tidal wave propagation has higher precision and requires less computational time than the implicit one; (2) large time step is allowed in the implicit scheme in order to reduce the computational time, but the precision of the solution also reduce and the calculation precision should be guaranteed by reducing the friction factor: (3) the friction factor in the implicit solution is related to Courant number, presented as the determined friction factor is smaller than the natural value when Courant number is larger than unity, and their relationship formula is given from the theoretical analysis and the numerical experiments. These results have important application value for the numerical simulation of the tidal wave.

The interaction of plasma with magnetic field in the partially ionised solar atmosphere is frequently modelled via a single-fluid approximation, which is valid for the case of a strongly coupled collisional media, such as solar photosphere and low chromosphere. Under the single-fluid formalism the main non-ideal effects are described by a series of extra terms in the generalised induction equation and in the energy conservation equation. These effects are: Ohmic diffusion, ambipolar diffusion, the Hall effect, and the Biermann battery effect. From the point of view of the numerical solution of the single-fluid equations, when ambipolar diffusion or Hall effects dominate can introduce severe restrictions on the integration time step and can compromise the stability of the numerical scheme. In this paper we introduce two numerical schemes to overcome those limitations. The first of them is known as super time-stepping (STS) and it is designed to overcome the limitations imposed when the ambipolar diffusion term is dominant. The second scheme is called the Hall diffusion scheme (HDS) and it is used when the Hall term becomes dominant. These two numerical techniques can be used together by applying Strang operator splitting. This paper describes the implementation of the STS and HDS schemes in the single-fluid code MANCHA3D. The validation for each of these schemes is provided by comparing the analytical solution with the numerical one for a suite of numerical tests.
