Vehicle Sideslip Angle Estimation Through Neural Networks: Application to Experimental Data

This work explores the possibility of using a non-structured algorithm as a sideslip angle valuer: on the basis of a preliminary numerical analysis, a neural network was designed and trained with experimental signals of lateral acceleration, vehicle speed, yaw rate and steer angle. The network was applied to experimental data in order to verify its capability of self-adaptation to changes in friction coefficient and to provide accurate estimations for manoeuvres sensibly different from the ones used during the training stage. The simple architecture joined with an appropriate training set conferred good self-adaptation properties to the neural network which was able to provide satisfying estimation of side slip angle for a wide range of manoeuvres and different friction conditions.

Accurate estimation of sideslip angle is essential for vehicle stability control. For commercial vehicles, the estimation of sideslip angle is challenging due to severe load transfer and tire nonlinearity. This paper presents a robust sideslip angle observer of commercial vehicles based on identification of tire cornering stiffness. Since tire cornering stiffness of commercial vehicles is greatly affected by tire force and road adhesion coefficient, it cannot be treated as a constant. To estimate the cornering stiffness in real time, the neural network model constructed by Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation (LMBP) algorithm is employed. LMBP is a fast convergent supervised learning algorithm, which combines the steepest descent method and gauss-newton method, and is widely used in system parameter estimation. LMBP does not rely on the mathematical model of the actual system when building the neural network. Therefore, when the mathematical model is difficult to establish, LMBP can play a very good role. Considering the complexity of tire modeling, this study adopted LMBP algorithm to estimate tire cornering stiffness, which have simplified the tire model and improved the estimation accuracy. Combined with neural network, A time-varying Kalman filter (TVKF) is designed to observe the sideslip angle of commercial vehicles. To validate the feasibility of the proposed estimation algorithm, multiple driving maneuvers under different road surface friction have been carried out. The test results show that the proposed method has better accuracy than the existing algorithm, and it’s robust over a wide range of driving conditions.

Aiming at the accuracy of estimation of vehicle’s mass center sideslip angle, an estimation method of slip angle based on general regression neural network (GRNN) and driver-vehicle closed-loop system has been proposed: regarding vehicle’s sideslip angle as time series mapping of yaw speed and lateral acceleration; using homogeneous design project to optimize the training samples; building the mapping relationship among sideslip angle, yaw speed, and lateral acceleration; at the same time, using experimental method to measure vehicle’s sideslip angle to verify validity of this method. Estimation results of neural network and real vehicle experiment show the same changing tendency. The mean of error is within 10% of test result’s amplitude. Results show GRNN can estimate vehicle’s sideslip angle correctly. It can offer a reference to the application of vehicle’s stability control system on vehicle’s state estimation.

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution with PM10 and PM2.5 (PM-particulate matter) is a significant problem that can have serious consequences for human health. Vehicles, as one of the main sources of PM10 and PM2.5 emissions, pollute the air and the environment both by creating particles by burning fuel in the engine, and by wearing of various elements in some vehicle systems. In this paper, the authors conducted the prediction of the formation of PM10 and PM2.5 particles generated by the wear of the braking system using a neural network (Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)). In this case, the neural network model was created based on the generated particles that were measured experimentally, while the validity of the created neural network was checked by means of a comparative analysis of the experimentally measured amount of particles and the prediction results. The experimental results were obtained by testing on an inertial braking dynamometer, where braking was performed in several modes, that is under different braking parameters (simulated vehicle speed, brake system pressure, temperature, braking time, braking torque). During braking, the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 particles was measured simultaneously. The total of 196 measurements were performed and these data were used for training, validation, and verification of the neural network. When it comes to simulation, a comparison of two types of neural networks was performed with one output and with two outputs. For each type, network training was conducted using three different algorithms of backpropagation methods. For each neural network, a comparison of the obtained experimental and simulation results was performed. More accurate prediction results were obtained by the single-output neural network for both particulate sizes, while the smallest error was found in the case of a trained neural network using the Levenberg-Marquardt backward propagation algorithm. The aim of creating such a prediction model is to prove that by using neural networks it is possible to predict the emission of particles generated by brake wear, which can be further used for modern traffic systems such as traffic control. In addition, this wear algorithm could be applied on other vehicle systems, such as a clutch or tires.

The aim of this work is to obtain high-resolution values of sea surface salinity (SSS) and temperature (SST) in the global ocean by using raw satellite data (i.e., without any band data pre-processing or atmospheric correction). Sentinel-2 Level 1-C Top of Atmosphere (TOA) reflectance data is used to obtain accurate SSS and SST information. A deep neural network is built to link the band information with in situ data from different buoys, vessels, drifters, and other platforms around the world. The neural network used in this paper includes shortcuts, providing an improved performance compared with the equivalent feed-forward architecture. The in situ information used as input for the network has been obtained from the Copernicus Marine In situ Service. Sentinel-2 platform-centred band data has been processed using Google Earth Engine in areas of 100 m × 100 m. Accurate salinity values are estimated for the first time independently of temperature. Salinity results rely only on direct satellite observations, although it presented a clear dependency on temperature ranges. Results show the neural network has good interpolation and extrapolation capabilities. Test results present correlation coefficients of 82 % and 84 % for salinity and temperature, respectively. The most common error for both SST and SSS is 0.4 ∘ C and 0 . 4 PSU. The sensitivity analysis shows that outliers are present in areas where the number of observations is very low. The network is finally applied over a complete Sentinel-2 tile, presenting sensible patterns for river-sea interaction, as well as seasonal variations. The methodology presented here is relevant for detailed coastal and oceanographic applications, reducing the time for data pre-processing, and it is applicable to a wide range of satellites, as the information is directly obtained from TOA data.

Abstract Automatic lane change is a necessary part for autonomous driving. This paper proposes an integrated strategy for automatic lane-changing decision and trajectory planning in dynamic scenario. The Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) is used in decision-making layer, whose prediction accuracy of the discretionary lane-changing is 94.22%. The planning layer determines the adjustable range of the average vehicle speed based on the size of the “lane-changing demand”, which is obtained based on the data of hidden layer in neural network, and then dynamically optimizes the lane-changing curve according to the vehicle speed and the current scenario. In order to verify the rationality of the proposed lane-changing architecture, simulation experiments based on a driving simulator is performed. The experiments show that the vehicle’s maximum lateral acceleration under the proposed lane-changing trajectory at a speed of 70km/h is about 0.1g, which means the vehicle has better comfort during lane-changing. At the same time, the proposed lane-changing trajectory is more in line with the human driver’s lane-changing trajectory compared with that of other planning strategy. Meanwhile, the planning strategy can also support the lane-changing trajectory planning on a curved road.

The aim of this work is to present a model for heat transfer, desorbed refrigerant, and pressure of an intermittent solar cooling system’s thermochemical reactor based on backpropagation neural networks and mathematical symmetry groups. In order to achieve this, a reactor was designed and built based on the reaction of BaCl2-NH3. Experimental data from this reactor were collected, where barium chloride was used as a solid absorbent and ammonia as a refrigerant. The neural network was trained using the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. The correlation coefficient between experimental data and data simulated by the neural network was r = 0.9957. In the neural network’s sensitivity analysis, it was found that the inputs, reactor’s heating temperature and sorption time, influence neural network’s learning by 35% and 20%, respectively. It was also found that, by applying permutations to experimental data and using multibase mathematical symmetry groups, the neural network training algorithm converges faster.

Different factors were classified, and scores were classified according to the number of characteristics of different categories. It can be seen that with the popularization of the Internet, MOOC teaching meets the requirements of the current college English curriculum, is a breakthrough in the traditional teaching mode, improves students’ participation, and enables students to learn independently. It not only conforms to the characteristics of College students, but also improves their learning effect. In the automatic scoring stage, the quantitative text features are extracted by the feature extractor in the pre-processing stage, and then the weights of network connections obtained in the training stage are used to score the weights comprehensively. This model can better reflect students’ autonomous learning ability and language application ability.

Integrated modelling of electron runaway requires computationally expensive kinetic models that are self-consistently coupled to the evolution of the background plasma parameters. The computational expense can be reduced by using parameterized runaway generation rates rather than solving the full kinetic problem. However, currently available generation rates neglect several important effects; in particular, they are not valid in the presence of partially ionized impurities. In this work, we construct a multilayer neural network for the Dreicer runaway generation rate which is trained on data obtained from kinetic simulations performed for a wide range of plasma parameters and impurities. The neural network accurately reproduces the Dreicer runaway generation rate obtained by the kinetic solver. By implementing it in a fluid runaway-electron modelling tool, we show that the improved generation rates lead to significant differences in the self-consistent runaway dynamics as compared to the results using the previously available formulas for the runaway generation rate.

Abstract The article sets the task of classifying various materials and determining their belonging to a specified group using a recurrent neural network. The practical significance of the article is to obtain the results of the neural network, confirming the possibility of classifying materials by the hardness parameter using a neural network. As part of the study, a number of experimental measurements were carried out. The structure of the neural network and its main components are described. The statistical parameters of the experimental data are estimated.
