The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of P3HT in orthodichlorobenzene were investigated at 532[Formula: see text]nm by Z-scan technique in the nanosecond domain. The nonlinear refraction of P3HT solution is up to an order of 10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]esu and changes the sign from positive to negative with an increase in the input intensity. The reverse saturable absorption of the P3HT solution was observed in the intensity range of the measurements and their nonlinear absorption coefficient reaches an order of 102[Formula: see text]cm/GW. The strong optical nonlinearity perhaps allows them to be widely applied in the photoelectric field.

The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of lanthanide bisphthalocyanine (Lu(TBPc)Pc), including first hyperpolarizability, second hyperpolarizability and reverse saturable absorption (RSA), have been investigated. Furthermore, Lu(TBPc)Pc has also been applied for optical switch based on its RSA performance.

A novel dmit 2- complex: [( C 2 H 5)4 N][Co(dmit) 2], abbreviated as EtCo , was synthesized and its third-order optical nonlinearities were characterized by Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1064 nm with laser duration of 40 ps. Z-scan curves revealed a negative nonlinear refraction at 1064 nm and a positive absorption was observed. The nonlinear refraction coefficient n2, the nonlinear absorption coefficient β and the molecular second hyperpolarizability γ have been determined to be as large as 9.51×10-19 m 2/ W , 2.19×10-12 m/W and 5.41×10-31 esu respectively, suggesting that this material has potential applications in optical limiting.

Graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films were successfully prepared by the magnetron sputtering technique and liquid phase exfoliation. Structure, morphology, optical properties, and nonlinear optical characteristics of the graphene/MoS2/Ag and graphene/MoS2 thin films were studied by X-ray diffractometer, spectrophotometer, field-scanning electron microscope, and femtosecond (fs) Z-scan technique. The results of the fs Z-scan experiment indicate that the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films exhibit reverse saturable absorption properties due to the free carrier absorption and two-photon absorption. More importantly, with the increase of DC magnetron sputtering power (from 5 to 15 W), the local surface plasmon resonance effect of the Ag thin films increases, which leads to the enhancement of nonlinear optical properties of the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films. The nonlinear absorption coefficients of the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films are increased from 1.14 × 10–10 to 1.8 × 10–10 m/W at 800 nm and from 4.79 × 10–11 to 6.79 × 10–11 m/W at 1,030 nm, and the nonlinear refraction index of the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films is -4.37 × 10–17∼−4.18 × 10–16 m2/W under the excitation of 800 and 1,030 nm, respectively. Moreover, when the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films were excited at 800 and 1,030 nm, respectively, the nonlinear figure of merit values of the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films are increased from 1.23 to 2.91 and from 1.30 to 1.47, which are enough to support the application of the graphene/MoS2/Ag thin films in the field of all-optical switching applications.

The third order nonlinear optical properties of two different sized carboxylate-modified microspheres are investigated at different pump powers. The nonlinear absorption (NLA) is measured at 532 nm using 10 Hz, 7 ns pulses from the second harmonic generated from a Q-switched Nd -YAG laser in an open aperture Z-scan setup. The nonlinear response is size-dependent, and switching from reverse saturable absorption (RSA) to saturable absorption (SA) is observed as the size increases.

In this study, 8-(4-methoxyphenyl)-6-oxo-3-p-tolyl-6H-pyrido[1,2-b][1,2,4]triazine-7,9-dicarbonitrile (A) was prepared and then the nonlinear optical properties of this compound, including nonlinear refractive index (n2) and nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) were measured using Z-scan technique by continuous wave laser diode at wavelengths of 405 and 532 nm. At wavelength of 532 nm, by increasing the incident intensity a switch over from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) was observed. The results showed that the nonlinear optical properties of this compound depend on the wavelength. It was also observed that with decreasing incident intensity, the thermal nonlinear refractive coefficient increased accordingly, while its thermo-optic coefficient decreased. In addition, the third-order susceptibility of this compound in wavelength of 532 nm was obtained higher than 405 nm.

π-Conjugated organic materials exhibit high and tunable nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, and fast response times. 4′-Phenyl-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine (PTP) is an important N-heterocyclic ligand involving π-conjugated systems, however, studies concerning the third-order NLO properties of terpyridine transition metal complexes are limited. The title binuclear terpyridine CoIIcomplex, bis(μ-4,4′-oxydibenzoato)-κ3O,O′:O′′;κ3O′′:O,O′-bis[(4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine-κ3N,N′,N′′)cobalt(II)], [Co2(C14H8O5)2(C21H15N3)2], (1), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. In the crystal structure, each CoIIcation is surrounded by three N atoms of a PTP ligand and three O atoms, two from a bidentate and one from a symmetry-related monodentate 4,4′-oxydibenzoate (ODA2−) ligand, completing a distorted octahedral coordination geometry. Neighbouring [Co(PTP)]2+units are bridged by ODA2−ligands to form a ring-like structure. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of (1) and PTP were determined in thin films using the Z-scan technique. The title compound shows a strong third-order NLO saturable absorption (SA), while PTP exhibits a third-order NLO reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The absorptive coefficient β of (1) is −37.3 × 10−7 m W−1, which is larger than that (8.96 × 10−7 m W−1) of PTP. The third-order NLO susceptibility χ(3)values are calculated as 6.01 × 10−8 e.s.u. for (1) and 1.44 × 10−8 e.s.u. for PTP.

A novel dmit 2- complex: [ C 7 H 7( C 2 H 5)3 N ][ Ni ( dmit )2], abbreviated as BTEANDT, was synthesized and its third-order nonlinear optical properties were investigated by Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps. A self-focusing effect and a saturable absorption were observed. The nonlinear refraction coefficient n2 and the nonlinear absorption coefficient β have been found to be 7.311 × 10-18 m 2/W and -6.064 cm/GW when I0=3.025 GW/cm2. The intensity dependence curve of β was also studied and the result reveals that β is proportional to I0. We explained the result with the theory of absorption cross-section.
