Time-Varying Transmissibility Analysis of Vehicle–Bridge Interaction Systems with Application to Bridge-Friendly Vehicles

It is well known that the natural frequencies of a coupled vehicle–bridge interaction system are time-varying. While this knowledge is useful for applications in bridge health monitoring, it does not provide an understanding of the relations between the excitation and coupled system responses, nor leads to developments of effective control strategies to mitigate vibration. In this paper, a novel theoretical framework for the time-varying displacement transmissibility is developed using a time-frozen technique. The time–frequency characteristics of the transmissibility functions are investigated to gain fundamental understanding and insights of the coupling dynamics in relation to the matching of bridge and vehicle natural frequencies. An important aspect of the transmissibility formulation is that it leads to the development of physics-based vibration control strategies in the frequency domain. By applying the principle of fixed points from vibration absorber designs to the transmissibility functions, an optimally tuned vehicle suspension to mitigate bridge vibration is obtained. The tuning strategy depends only on a priori known structural parameters. Thus, the tuning strategy provides useful guidelines in practice and is shown to be effective in reducing the vibrations of both the moving vehicle and the bridge. This work paves a foundation for further research in the design of bridge-friendly vehicles via parameter tuning.

Engineering structures usually exhibit time-varying behavior when subjected to strong excitation or due to material deterioration. This behavior is one of the key properties affecting the structural performance. Hence, reasonable description and timely tracking of time-varying characteristics of engineering structures are necessary for their safety assessment and life-cycle management. Due to its powerful ability of approximating functions in the time–frequency domain, wavelet multi-resolution approximation has been widely applied in the field of parameter estimation. Considering that the damage levels of beams and columns are usually different, identification of time-varying structural parameters of frame structure under seismic excitation using wavelet multi-resolution approximation is studied in this article. A time-varying dynamical model including both the translational and rotational degrees of freedom is established so as to estimate the stiffness coefficients of beams and columns separately. By decomposing each time-varying structural parameter using one wavelet multi-resolution approximation, the time-varying parametric identification problem is transformed into a time-invariant non-parametric one. In solving the high number of regressors in the non-parametric regression program, the modified orthogonal forward regression algorithm is proposed for significant term selection and parameter estimation. This work is demonstrated through numerical examples which consider both gradual variation and abrupt changes in the structural parameters.

A wavelet domain forward differential Ricatti formulation is proposed in this paper for control of linear time-varying (LTV) systems. The control feedback gains derived are time-frequency dependent, and they can be appropriately tuned for each wavelet scale or frequency band. The gains in the proposed forward formulation are functions of the present and past states and hence lead to a nonlinear controller. This nonlinear controller does not require information or approximation about future system matrices. The proposed controller is suitable for systems with time-varying (TV) system matrices and also for controlling transient dynamics. The performance of the proposed controller is compared with two other control strategies, namely, a TV linear quadratic regulator (LQR) based on a backward formulation of the differential Ricatti equation (DRE) and a multiscale wavelet-LQR controller based on asymptotic assumptions. Two numerical examples demonstrate promising results on the performance of the controller.

This paper presents a practical methodology developed for shape optimization studies of hydraulic structures using environmental numerical modelling codes. The methodology starts by defining the optimization problem and identifying relevant problem constraints. Design variables in shape optimization studies are configuration of structures (such as length or spacing of groins, orientation and layout of breakwaters, etc.) whose optimal orientation is not known a priori. The optimization problem is solved numerically by coupling an optimization algorithm to a numerical model. The coupled system is able to define, test and evaluate a multitude of new shapes, which are internally generated and then simulated using a numerical model. The developed methodology is tested using an example of an optimum design of a fish passage, where the design variables are the length and the position of slots. In this paper an objective function is defined where a target is specified and the numerical optimizer is asked to retrieve the target solution. Such a definition of the objective function is used to validate the developed tool chain. This work uses the numerical model TELEMAC- 2Dfrom the TELEMAC-MASCARET suite of numerical solvers for the solution of shallow water equations, coupled with various numerical optimization algorithms available in the literature.

Plant parasitic nematodes are annually responsible for the loss of 10%–25% of worldwide crop production, most of which is attributable to root-knot nematodes (RKNs) that infest a wide range of agricultural crops throughout the world. Current nematode control tools are not enough to ensure the effective management of these parasites, mainly due to the severe restrictions imposed on the use of chemical pesticides. Therefore, it is important to discover new potential nematicidal sources that are suitable for the development of additional safe and effective control strategies. In the last few decades, there has been an explosion of information about the use of seaweeds as plant growth stimulants and potential nematicides. Novel bioactive compounds have been isolated from marine cyanobacteria and sponges in an effort to find their application outside marine ecosystems and in the discovery of new drugs. Their potential as antihelmintics could also be exploited to find applicability against plant parasitic nematodes. The present review focuses on the activity of marine organisms on RKNs and their potential application as safe nematicidal agents.

Rifampicin (RIF) is one of the most important first-line anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs, and more than 90% of RIF-resistant (RR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates belong to multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB. In order to identify specific candidate target proteins as diagnostic markers or drug targets, differential protein expression between drug-sensitive (DS) and drug-resistant (DR) strains remains to be investigated. In the present study, a label-free, quantitative proteomics technique was performed to compare the proteome of DS, RR, MDR, and XDR clinical strains. We found iniC, Rv2141c, folB, and Rv2561 were up-regulated in both RR and MDR strains, while fadE9, espB, espL, esxK, and Rv3175 were down-regulated in the three DR strains when compared to the DS strain. In addition, lprF, mce2R, mce2B, and Rv2627c were specifically expressed in the three DR strains, and 41 proteins were not detected in the DS strain. Functional category showed that these differentially expressed proteins were mainly involved in the cell wall and cell processes. When compared to the RR strain, Rv2272, smtB, lpqB, icd1, and folK were up-regulated, while esxK, PPE19, Rv1534, rpmI, ureA, tpx, mpt64, frr, Rv3678c, esxB, esxA, and espL were down-regulated in both MDR and XDR strains. Additionally, nrp, PPE3, mntH, Rv1188, Rv1473, nadB, PPE36, and sseA were specifically expressed in both MDR and XDR strains, whereas 292 proteins were not identified when compared to the RR strain. When compared between MDR and XDR strains, 52 proteins were up-regulated, while 45 proteins were down-regulated in the XDR strain. 316 proteins were especially expressed in the XDR strain, while 92 proteins were especially detected in the MDR strain. Protein interaction networks further revealed the mechanism of their involvement in virulence and drug resistance. Therefore, these differentially expressed proteins are of great significance for exploring effective control strategies of DR-TB.

Localizing small damages often requires sensors be mounted in the proximity of damage to obtain high Signal-to-Noise Ratio in system frequency response to input excitation. The proximity requirement limits the applicability of existing schemes for low-severity damage detection as an estimate of damage location may not be known  a priori. In this work it is shown that spatial locality is not a fundamental impediment; multiple small damages can still be detected with high accuracy provided that the frequency range beyond the first five natural frequencies is utilized in the Frequency response functions (FRF) curvature method. The proposed method presented in this paper applies sensitivity analysis to systematically unearth frequency ranges capable of elevating damage index peak at correct damage locations. It is a baseline-free method that employs a smoothing polynomial to emulate reference curvatures for the undamaged structure. Numerical simulation of steel-beam shows that small multiple damages of severity as low as 5% can be reliably detected by including frequency range covering 5–10th natural frequencies. The efficacy of the scheme is also experimentally validated for the same beam. It is also found that a simple noise filtration scheme such as a Gaussian moving average filter can adequately remove false peaks from the damage index profile.

Abstract Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is a serious invasive pest impacting the production of multiple fruit crops, including soft and stone fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and cherries. Effective control is challenging and reliant on integrated pest management which includes the use of an ever decreasing number of approved insecticides. New means to reduce the impact of this pest that can be integrated into control strategies are urgently required. In many production regions, including the UK, soft fruit are typically grown inside tunnels clad with polyethylene based materials. These can be modified to filter specific wavebands of light. We investigated whether targeted spectral modifications to cladding materials that disrupt insect vision could reduce the incidence of D. suzukii. We present a novel approach that starts from a neuroscientific investigation of insect sensory systems and ends with infield testing of new cladding materials inspired by the biological data. We show D. suzukii are predominantly sensitive to wavelengths below 405 nm (ultraviolet) and above 565 nm (orange & red) and that targeted blocking of lower wavebands (up to 430 nm) using light restricting materials reduces pest populations up to 73% in field trials.

A new signal processing method for phase difference estimation was proposed based on time-varying signal model, whose frequency, amplitude and phase are time-varying. And then be applied Coriolis mass flowmeter signal. First, a bandpass filtering FIR filter was applied to filter the sensor output signal in order to improve SNR. Then, the signal frequency could be calculated based on short-time frequency estimation. Finally, by short window intercepting, the DTFT algorithm with negative frequency contribution was introduced to calculate the real-time phase difference between two enhanced signals. With the frequency and the phase difference obtained, the time interval of two signals was calculated. Simulation results show that the algorithms studied are efficient. Furthermore, the computation of algorithms studied is simple so that it can be applied to real-time signal processing for Coriolis mass flowmeter.

Continuous-time linear systems with uncertain parameters are widely used for modeling real-life processes. The uncertain parameters, contained in the system and input matrices, can be constant or time-varying. In the latter case, they may represent state dependencies of these matrices. Assuming bounded uncertainties, interval methods become applicable for a verified reachability analysis, for feasibility analysis of feedback controllers, or for the design of robust set-valued state estimators. The evaluation of these system models becomes computationally efficient after a transformation into a cooperative state-space representation, where the dynamics satisfy certain monotonicity properties with respect to the initial conditions. To obtain such representations, similarity transformations are required which are not trivial to find for sufficiently wide a-priori bounds of the uncertain parameters. This paper deals with the derivation and algorithmic comparison of two different transformation techniques for which their applicability to processes with constant and time-varying parameters has to be distinguished. An interval-based reachability analysis of the states of a simple electric step-down converter concludes this paper.
