Integrated Determination of Objective Criteria Weights in MCDM

In multiple criteria evaluation, criteria weights are of great importance. In practice, subjective criteria weights determined by specialists/experts are commonly used. The types of elements of a decision matrix also play an important role in the evaluation of alternatives. The objective weights help to estimate the structure of data. The entropy method is widely used for determining the weights (significances) of criteria. A new method of the criterion impact loss, CILOS, is used for determining a relative impact loss experienced by the criterion of an alternative, when another criterion is chosen to be the best. The authors of the paper have combined the best features of the entropy method and the CILOS approach to obtain a new method – Integrated Determination of Objective CRIteria Weights, or (IDOCRIW).

The environment in which the decision-making process takes place is often characterized by uncertainty and vagueness and, because of that, sometimes it is very hard to express the criteria weights with crisp numbers. Therefore, the application of the Grey System Theory, i.e., grey numbers, in this case, is very convenient when it comes to determination of the criteria weights with partially known information. Besides, the criteria weights have a significant role in the multiple criteria decision-making process. Many ordinary multiple criteria decision-making methods are adapted for using grey numbers, and this is the case in this article as well. A new grey extension of the certain multiple criteria decision-making methods for the determination of the criteria weights is proposed. Therefore, the article aims to propose a new extension of the Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) and PIvot Pairwise Relative Criteria Importance Assessment (PIPRECIA) methods adapted for group decision-making. In the proposed approach, attitudes of decision-makers are transformed into grey group attitudes, which allows taking advantage of the benefit that grey numbers provide over crisp numbers. The main advantage of the proposed approach in relation to the use of crisp numbers is the ability to conduct different analyses, i.e., considering different scenarios, such as pessimistic, optimistic, and so on. By varying the value of the whitening coefficient, different weights of the criteria can be obtained, and it should be emphasized that this approach gives the same weights as in the case of crisp numbers when the whitening coefficient has a value of 0.5. In addition, in this approach, the grey number was formed based on the median value of collected responses because it better maintains the deviation from the normal distribution of the collected responses. The application of the proposed approach was considered through two numerical illustrations, based on which appropriate conclusions were drawn.

The weights of criteria in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems are essential elements that can significantly affect the results. Accordingly, researchers developed and presented several methods to determine criteria weights. Weighting methods could be objective, subjective, and integrated. This study introduces a new method, called MEREC (MEthod based on the Removal Effects of Criteria), to determine criteria’ objective weights. This method uses a novel idea for weighting criteria. After systematically introducing the method, we present some computational analyses to confirm the efficiency of the MEREC. Firstly, an illustrative example demonstrates the procedure of the MEREC for calculation of the weights of criteria. Secondly, a comparative analysis is presented through an example for validation of the introduced method’s results. Additionally, we perform a simulation-based analysis to verify the reliability of MEREC and the stability of its results. The data of the MCDM problems generated for making this analysis follow a prevalent symmetric distribution (normal distribution). We compare the results of the MEREC with some other objective weighting methods in this analysis, and the analysis of means (ANOM) for variances shows the stability of its results. The conducted analyses demonstrate that the MEREC is efficient to determine objective weights of criteria.

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to familiarize the reader with the general application of MCDM methods on a specific example of City Logistics in order to find the optimal solution for operation of the territory. In its introductory part, methods used for quantitative evaluation of variant solutions are briefly described, and then the so-called Forces Decision Matrix Method (FDMM) including the determination of criteria weights using pairwise comparison of variants according to individual criteria on the specific example is applied. In the final part of the paper, the advantages and disadvantages of using this method for more complex tasks with multiple variant solutions based on the results of the practical example are evaluated and the so-called Saaty’s method based on the quantitative pair-wise comparison to partially eliminate differences in the mutual evaluation of weights and criteria is mentioned.

The aim of the present study is to propose a new approach for evaluating and comparing European countries using indicators of the children physical activity and the human development index. The Global Matrix 3.0 on physical activity for children and youth and human development index data on the 18 European countries were used. MADM (multi-attribute decision making) approach was applied for this task. The criteria weights calculated by applying the weight balancing method—weight balancing indicator ranks accordance (WEBIRA). New methodology of interval entropy is proposed for determining the priority of criteria separately in each group. The novel approach of α-cuts for recursive procedure of ranking the alternatives was used. For comparison, three alternative entropy-based methods—entropy method for determining the criterion weight (EMDCW), method of criteria impact LOSs and determination of objective weights (CILOS) and integrated determination of objective criteria weights (IDOCRIW) were applied to address this MADM problem. Cluster analysis of European countries carried out using results obtained by all above methods. Comparison of the MADM methods revealed that three alternative methods assigned negligible values to whole group of criteria. Meanwhile, WEBIRA family methods performed the ranking of European countries according to the interrelation of the two groups of criteria in a balanced way. Thus, when addressing MADM tasks with two or more naturally related sets of criteria, it is appropriate to apply criteria adapted for that purpose, such as WEBIRA.

This paper presents a case study in selecting the best location for a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) in Bali. FSRU is an alternative to replace a conventional shore LNG terminal. The selection involves several criteria/attributes that can be grouped into two general attributes, namely qualitative and quantitative attribute. Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach is utilized to solve the selection problem, considering the capability of this method in solving multi-criteria problem with mutual conflict. Qualitative criteria is evaluated using AHP method to calculate weight of each criteria, and decision matrix algorithm is then utilized to convert preference of stakeholders into, consecutively, probability assignment, total probability assignment and preference degree. Quantitative criteria are also converted into preference degree and after combining with the preference degree of qualitative attribute, entropy method is then used to rank the alternatives. Selected location would be the alternative having the highest entropy. Four alternatives are under consideration; Benoa, Celukan Bawang, Pemaron and Gilimanuk. This research found that Celukan Bawang is the best location for the FSRU.

The paper addresses the issue of multiple criteria rankings of infrastructural projects (buildings, roads, etc.). Although the amount of literature devoted to this subject is considerable, all methods proposed produce subjective rankings, dependent on a direct or indirect definition of weighting coefficients applicable to subsequent evaluation criteria. Infrastructural projects are usually selected and approved collegially, however, by a group of decision makers with preferences that may potentially differ significantly. Therefore, an objectified ranking, independent from subjectively defined weighting coefficients, is needed for infrastructural projects. Such a ranking is proposed, analyzed and applied by the authors of this paper. This ranking depends originally only on the multiple objective evaluation data, i.e. the values of evaluation criteria related to decision scenarios or alternatives. Such an approach does not render a fully objective ranking, since one of this kind does not exist at all. Even the choice of the ranking method is a subjective decision, but it is objectified to the extent possible. The paper presents several examples of multiple criteria evaluation of infrastructural projects, derived from literature, and compares subjective rankings published in literature with objectified rankings that are independent of weighting coefficients.

SummaryThe term “effective activator” of plasminogen is proposed, to denote the resultant of activator-antiactivator interaction, and a method for the determination of the level of these activators is described. By adding axcess plasminogen to the euglobulin fraction of plasma the influence of the level of endogenous plasminogen and of the antiplasmin is eliminated. It is shown that the level of fibrinogen has very little bearing on the results. An effective activator unit is defined as equal to 1 CTA unit of urokinase activity on a fibrinogen-plasminogen substrate.
