As more and more governments adopt algorithms to support bureaucratic decision-making processes, it becomes urgent to address issues of responsible use and accountability. We examine a contested public service algorithm used in Danish job placement for assessing an individual's risk of long-term unemployment. The study takes inspiration from cooperative audits and was carried out in dialogue with the Danish unemployment services agency. Our audit investigated the practical implementation of algorithms. We find (1) a divergence between the formal documentation and the model tuning code, (2) that the algorithmic model relies on subjectivity, namely the variable which focus on the individual's self-assessment of how long it will take before they get a job, (3) that the algorithm uses the variable "origin" to determine its predictions, and (4) that the documentation neglects to consider the implications of using variables indicating personal characteristics when predicting employment outcomes. We discuss the benefits and limitations of cooperative audits in a public sector context. We specifically focus on the importance of collaboration across different public actors when investigating the use of algorithms in the algorithmic society.

Abstract The article is a review of completed research on developed and implemented innovative and technologically advanced technical systems. According to the Industry 4.0 concept they can have a significant impact on the efficiency of production processes and product development. In this perspective, the key aspect seems to be maintenance management of technical systems, realized both in the operate phase as well as during service and repair works. There were discussed research results of authors and developed application solutions supporting decision-making processes, in terms of three main periods of realization of exploitation processes: short, medium and long-term.

This chapter makes three arguments in support of the claim that we need inclusive deliberative processes to shape the future in collectively intentional, mutually accommodating ways. First, inclusive collective decision-making processes are needed to avoid futures that favour the interests of some groups of people over others. Second, deliberative processes are needed to shape our shared futures in collectively intentional ways: we need to be able to talk to ourselves about what we are doing and where we want to get to in the future. Third, deliberative exchanges are needed to help collectivities avoid the policy oscillations that are (or may be) associated with the political dynamics of short electoral cycles. Effective processes of reciprocal reason giving can help collectivities maintain policy continuity over the long term—when continuity is justified—even as governments and generations change.

According to a study conducted by BoardSource and reported in, Leading with Intent: 2017 National Index of Nonprofit Board Practices (Board-Source, 2017), 72% of nonprofit CEO/Executive Director positions are held by females, while only 48% are Executive Board Members and 42% are Board Chairs. The discrepancy between the number of board positions held by women versus staff leadership positions has been the subject of many recent publications. Reviewing academic and industry literature, this paper explores the relationship between an allmale board’s choice of self-assessment tools and its decision-making processes related to creating a gender inclusive board. This paper provides additional insight by applying communication theoretical frameworks to analyze allmale board decision-making processes which ultimately affect recruitment outcomes.

The presented study identifies approaches to decision-making aimed at the optimal development of the urban environment.Aim. The study aims to develop proposals for improving methodological approaches aimed at the development of the urban environment and for using these approaches in the preparation of the corresponding management decisions.Tasks. The author assesses the problem of urbanization and shows how it affects the need to modernize the urban environment; formulates the principles of optimization of management decision-making aimed at the development of the urban environment; evaluates the possibility of the practical implementation of these principles (through the example of the federal city of St. Petersburg).Methods. This study uses strategic analysis, systems and case-based approach, comparative and retrospective analysis.Results. The practical aspects of designing the processes and approaches to urban environment management are examined. The efficiency of management is shown to depend largely on the optimization of management decisions that could improve the effectiveness of individual services aimed at the formation and development of a modern urban environment in the long term. The study describes the successful experience of St. Petersburg in developing the complex of urban environment management services.Conclusions. Improving urban environment management is an important aspect of increasing the population’s quality of life. As evidenced by St. Petersburg’s experience, to achieve a high level of comfort in the urban environment it is necessary to actively use the principles of consistency, innovation, and public participation in decision-making. The author recommends normative consolidation of these principles and their more active practical application in the management of Russian cities.

In this article, we report findings from a qualitative study that explored how the relatives of intensive care unit patients experienced the nurses’ role and relationship with them in the end-of-life decision-making processes. In all, 27 relatives of 21 deceased patients were interviewed about their experiences in this challenging ethical issue. The findings reveal that despite bedside experiences of care, compassion and comfort, the nurses were perceived as vague and evasive in their communication, and the relatives missed a long-term perspective in the dialogue. Few experienced that nurses participated in meetings with doctors and relatives. The ethical consequences imply increased loneliness and uncertainty, and the experience that the relatives themselves have the responsibility of obtaining information and understanding their role in the decision-making process. The relatives therefore felt that the nurses could have been more involved in the process.

This research has interdisciplinarily employed the “SoLoMo” concept of Intern of Things (IoT) technology, Social Cognitive Theory and the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM) into the hierarchical Analytical Network Process (ANP) model of qualitative analysis in order to concretively construct the most comprehensive IoT technology model in the purchasing decision-making process of the omnichannel e-commerce model. Statistically, this research not only employed the Factor Analysis (FA) approach of quantitative analysis for systematically assaying the data results from the dispensation of large-scale questionnaires to refine the commonality of each sub-criterion with higher research representativeness and validity but it also applied the Fuzzy Set Theory (FST) and Grey Relation Analysis (GRA) methods of qualitative analyses for in-depth analytically evaluate the data results from the operation of expert’s questionnaires to refine the measured consequences of the ANP model with higher research accuracy and reliability. Conclusively, the “Purchasing Original Intentions” has been the most critical purchasing factors in the omnichannel e-commerce purchasing decision-making processes which means current omnichannel e-commerce consumers have commenced to firstly and rationally think over before making purchasing decisions and actions without any irrational consumptions. Conclusively, “Purchasing Importance-Purchasing Importance (PI)”, “Purchasing Financial Status-Purchasing Financial Status (PFS)” and “Purchaser’s Personality-Purchaser’s Personality (PP)” were the most potential IoT technology determinants in the omnichannel e-commerce purchasing decision-making processes because (1) omnichannel e-commerce consumers have been rationally focused on what they demand without traditional emotional purchasing consumptions, (2) omnichannel e-commerce consumers have rationally considered their financial resources without impulsive purchasing consumptions and (3) omnichannel e-commerce consumers have rationally respected their personal characteristics and individual value without blindly purchasing consumptions.
