The traditional image object detection algorithm applied in power inspection cannot effectively position power components, and the accuracy of recognition is low in scenes with some interference. In this research, we proposed a data-driven power detection method based on the improved YOLOv4-tiny model, which combined the ResNet-D module and the adjusted Res-CBAM to the backbone network of the existing YOLOv4-tiny module. We replaced the CSPOSANet module in the YOLOv4-tiny backbone network with the ResNet-D module to reduce the FLOPS required by the model. At the same time, the adjusted Res-CBAM whose feature fusion ways were replaced with stacking in the channels was combined as an auxiliary classifier. Finally, the features of five different receptive scales were used for prediction, and the display of the results was optimized by merging the prediction boxes. In the experiment, 57134 images collected on the power inspection line were processed and labeled, and the default anchor boxes were re-clustered, and the speed and accuracy of the model were evaluated by video and validation set of 3459 images. Processing multiple pictures and videos collected from the power inspection projects, we re-clustered the default anchor box and tested the speed and accuracy of the model. The results show that compared with the original YOLOv4-tiny model, the accuracy of our method that can position objects under occlusion and complex lighting conditions is guaranteed while the detection speed is about 13% faster.

Unlike optical equipment, SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) has the advantage of obtaining images in all weather, and object detection in SAR images is an important issue. Generally, deep learning-based object detection was mainly performed in real-valued network using only amplitude of SAR image. Since the SAR image is complex data consist of amplitude and phase data, a complex-valued network is required. In this paper, a complex-valued ResNet network is proposed. SAR image object detection was performed by combining the ROI transformer detector specialized for aerial image detection and the proposed complex-valued ResNet. It was confirmed that higher accuracy was obtained in complex-valued network than in existing real-valued network.

Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) have been extensively used in various dangerous maritime tasks. Vision-based sea surface object detection algorithms can improve the environment perception abilities of USVs. In recent years, the object detection algorithms based on neural networks have greatly enhanced the accuracy and speed of object detection. However, the balance between speed and accuracy is a difficulty in the application of object detection algorithms for USVs. Most of the existing object detection algorithms have limited performance when they are applied in the object detection technology for USVs. Therefore, a sea surface object detection algorithm based on You Only Look Once v4 (YOLO v4) was proposed. Reverse Depthwise Separable Convolution (RDSC) was developed and applied to the backbone network and feature fusion network of YOLO v4. The number of weights of the improved YOLO v4 is reduced by more than 40% compared with the original number. A large number of ablation experiments were conducted on the improved YOLO v4 in the sea ship dataset SeaShips and a buoy dataset SeaBuoys. The experimental results showed that the detection speed of the improved YOLO v4 increased by more than 20%, and mAP increased by 1.78% and 0.95%, respectively, in the two datasets. The improved YOLO v4 effectively improved the speed and accuracy in the sea surface object detection task. The improved YOLO v4 algorithm fused with RDSC has a smaller network size and better real-time performance. It can be easily applied in the hardware platforms with weak computing power and has shown great application potential in the sea surface object detection.

In recent years, deep-learning-based fruit-detection technology has exhibited excellent performance in modern horticulture research. However, deploying deep learning algorithms in real-time field applications is still challenging, owing to the relatively low image processing capability of edge devices. Such limitations are becoming a new bottleneck and hindering the utilization of AI algorithms in modern horticulture. In this paper, we propose a lightweight fruit-detection algorithm, specifically designed for edge devices. The algorithm is based on Light-CSPNet as the backbone network, an improved feature-extraction module, a down-sampling method, and a feature-fusion module, and it ensures real-time detection on edge devices while maintaining the fruit-detection accuracy. The proposed algorithm was tested on three edge devices: NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX, NVIDIA Jetson TX2, and NVIDIA Jetson NANO. The experimental results show that the average detection precision of the proposed algorithm for orange, tomato, and apple datasets are 0.93, 0.847, and 0.850, respectively. Deploying the algorithm, the detection speed of NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX reaches 21.3, 24.8, and 22.2 FPS, while that of NVIDIA Jetson TX2 reaches 13.9, 14.1, and 14.5 FPS and that of NVIDIA Jetson NANO reaches 6.3, 5.0, and 8.5 FPS for the three datasets. Additionally, the proposed algorithm provides a component add/remove function to flexibly adjust the model structure, considering the trade-off between the detection accuracy and speed in practical usage.

The vision-based road lane detection technique plays a key role in driver assistance system. While existing lane recognition algorithms demonstrated over 90% detection rate, the validation test was usually conducted on limited scenarios. Significant gaps still exist when applied in real-life autonomous driving. The goal of this article was to identify these gaps and to suggest research directions that can bridge them. The straight lane detection algorithm based on linear Hough transform (HT) was used in this study as an example to evaluate the possible perception issues under challenging scenarios, including various road types, different weather conditions and shades, changed lighting conditions, and so on. The study found that the HT-based algorithm presented an acceptable detection rate in simple backgrounds, such as driving on a highway or conditions showing distinguishable contrast between lane boundaries and their surroundings. However, it failed to recognize road dividing lines under varied lighting conditions. The failure was attributed to the binarization process failing to extract lane features before detections. In addition, the existing HT-based algorithm would be interfered by lane-like interferences, such as guardrails, railways, bikeways, utility poles, pedestrian sidewalks, buildings and so on. Overall, all these findings support the need for further improvements of current road lane detection algorithms to be robust against interference and illumination variations. Moreover, the widely used algorithm has the potential to raise the lane boundary detection rate if an appropriate search range restriction and illumination classification process is added.

Abstract Videoplethysmography is currently recognized as a promising noninvasive heart rate measurement method advantageous for ubiquitous monitoring of humans in natural living conditions. Although the method is considered for application in several areas including telemedicine, sports and assisted living, its dependence on lighting conditions and camera performance is still not investigated enough. In this paper we report on research of various image acquisition aspects including the lighting spectrum, frame rate and compression. In the experimental part, we recorded five video sequences in various lighting conditions (fluorescent artificial light, dim daylight, infrared light, incandescent light bulb) using a programmable frame rate camera and a pulse oximeter as the reference. For a video sequence-based heart rate measurement we implemented a pulse detection algorithm based on the power spectral density, estimated using Welch’s technique. The results showed that lighting conditions and selected video camera settings including compression and the sampling frequency influence the heart rate detection accuracy. The average heart rate error also varies from 0.35 beats per minute (bpm) for fluorescent light to 6.6 bpm for dim daylight.

In the image object detection task, a huge number of candidate boxes are generated to match with a relatively very small amount of ground-truth boxes, and through this method the learning samples can be created. But in fact the vast majority of the candidate boxes do not contain valid object instances and should be recognized and rejected during the training and evaluation of the network. This leads to extra high computation burden and a serious imbalance problem between object and none-object samples, thereby impeding the algorithm’s performance. Here we propose a new heuristic sampling method to generate candidate boxes for two-stage detection algorithms. It is generally applicable to the current two-stage detection algorithms to improve their detection performance. Experiments on COCO dataset showed that, relative to the baseline model, this new method could significantly increase the detection accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract Aiming at the problem of false detection and missed detection of small targets and occluded targets in the process of pedestrian detection, a pedestrian detection algorithm based on improved multi-scale feature fusion is proposed. First, for the YOLOv4 multi-scale feature fusion module PANet, which does not consider the interaction relationship between scales, PANet is improved to reduce the semantic gap between scales, and the attention mechanism is introduced to learn the importance of different layers to strengthen feature fusion; then, dilated convolution is introduced. Dilated convolution reduces the problem of information loss during the downsampling process; finally, the K-means clustering algorithm is used to redesign the anchor box and modify the loss function to detect a single category. The experimental results show that the improved pedestrian detection algorithm in the INRIA and WiderPerson data sets under different congestion conditions, the AP reaches 96.83% and 59.67%, respectively. Compared with the pedestrian detection results of the YOLOv4 model, the algorithm improves by 2.41% and 1.03%, respectively. The problem of false detection and missed detection of small targets and occlusion has been significantly improved.
