Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is one of the critical components of kangaroo mother care (KMC), which is an intervention to enhance the survival of low birth weight (LBW) and/or premature infants in low-income settings. Chest-to-chest (CC) contact has been practiced widely; however, mothers face practical challenges to continuously provide CC-SSC. Hence, we assessed the efficacy of chest-to-back (CB) SSC as an alternative to CC-SSC in regulating body temperature for LBW and/or premature babies in Ethiopia. We applied a noninferiority clinical trial among LBW and/or premature infants admitted to a referral hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Ethiopia. The study randomized the infants into two crossover arms; arm 1 applied first CB-SSC followed by CC-SSC, and arm 2 applied first CC-SSC followed by CB-SSC. The outcome measure was a change in skin temperature. We used a linear mixed-effect model for analysis. The result showed no statistically significant difference in the mean temperature between the comparison arms. In conclusion, we found that the CB-SSC was not inferior to the CC-SSC in regulating body temperature of the babies. Thus, CB-SSC can be further investigated as an alternative to CC-SSC in the kangaroo care model in low-income settings.

Infants born with low birth weight or LBW are very susceptible to hypothermia due to the thin fat reserves under the skin and immature heat regulating centers in the brain. The search for articles consisted of five databases, namely Scopus, Science Direct, PubMed, Garuda, and Proquest. Analysis of 25 articles on kangaroo mother care and self-care showed that kangaroo mother care can keep the baby's body temperature stable and reduce the risk of hypothermia in newborns with low weight and make it easier for the baby to breastfeed. This systematic review shows that the kangaroo mother care method has a more significant impact on baby weight gain and the stability of the baby's body temperature by maintaining skin to skin contact between mother and baby for later implementation in the community. This method is more effective than the swaddling method.  Keyword: Kangaroo Mother Care; Swaddling; Low Birth Weight; Community

Baby Incubator is one of the electromedical equipment used to provide protection to premature babies or low birth weight. Baby care in the baby incubator causes separation of mother and baby. A new innovation in the care of premature babies who bring their babies and mothers closer is Kangaroo Method Management (PMK). Kangaroo method treatment aims to create emotional attachment to the baby, so that the mother will confidently take care. The research and manufacture of this module uses a method of treating baby incubator by adding a reading of the room temperature when the kangaroo mode runs at a setting of 34 ° C - 37 ° C with the effect of room temperature at 18 ° C, 24 ° C, and 30 ° C and setting the humidity control automatically by measuring at a temperature of 32 ° C, then measuring the results immediately. Sensors used to detect temperature are LM35 sensors and sensors used to detect humidity using DHT22. Based on the measurement results obtained uncertainty values on the measurement of humidity 2.1, the measurement of temperature stability can be seen from the results of the graph which shows that the room temperature is not too influential at the temperature of the baby incubator. This study has shown the development of baby incubators to help mothers who have babies born prematurely so that they can have a good bond with how to treat skin to skin. This study has proven that its accuracy is appropriate to be used to stabilize the condition of babies born prematurely and help to treat PMK in some hospitals. In the future, this research can be made and used in small clinics in villages at low costs.

Kangaroo care is a simple way of caring for a newborn in which the mother uses her body temperature to warm the baby. Benefits of Kangaroo Treatment Method: warms the baby and stabilizes the baby's vital signs because premature babies tend to be low in weight, fat tissue in their bodies also tends to be thinner. Increasing the duration of sleep, the mechanism that occurs during skin contact with the skin of the mother and baby can increase the hormone cortisol in the baby which has an impact on the quality of the baby's sleep. Reduces crying and wasted calories from babies. Increasing baby weight and brain development Premature babies tend to have low birth weight and sometimes find it difficult to reach the ideal weight. This method can make the baby sleep more soundly, so that the energy can be channeled to improve body functions and build body tissues better. This way, you can gain weight more quickly. Improving the emotional connection of the baby and the mother KMC increases the bonding between the mother and the baby and is a therapeutic intervention to increase the closeness of the mother, promoting natural behavior to stimulate growth and development. Facilitate breastfeeding The position of the kangaroo method makes it easier for babies to suckle from their mothers while triggering breast milk to come out more easily. Some research shows that this method is also good for dealing with the problem of insufficient breast milk. Mothers and families feel more satisfied because they play a role in caring for the baby while in the hospital and at home. The purpose of this study was to find out how the description of public knowledge about kangaroo care methods in low birth weight infants. Background: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is skin-to-skin contact between mother and low birth weight (LBW) baby. It keeps the baby warm, increases accessibility to breast feeding, and protects the baby from infections. This study was done to identify supportive factors and barriers in practicing KMC as perceived by mothers of LBW babies and health care personnel (HCP).Methods: It was a questionnaire based descriptive study. Mothers of LBW babies and HCP were enrolled in study. Mothers and HCP were sensitized regarding KMC and after practicing KMC for 3 days, mothers were interviewed with the help of a predefined proforma. Feedback from the HCP was also taken. Data analysis was performed by using IBM SPSS ver. 20 software. Results: Most common factor in initiation and practice of KMC were, knowledge regarding KMC after training (100%), environmental factors (privacy and resources) (87.27%) and support from HCP (94.54%). Most common barriers perceived during performance of KMC were lack of knowledge about KMC during pregnancy (80%), pain due to LSCS/episiotomy (64.54%) and lack of support from family members (51.81%). Majority of the HCP strongly agree that parents must be encouraged to adopt KMC (82.92%), KMC is hampered due to presence of visitors in the ward (73.17%). KMC needs separate room (68.29%) and it is difficult due to LSCS (51.21%).Conclusions: To increase KMC practice, mother’s knowledge about KMC can be improved by educating them in antenatal clinics and all HCP should receive training on KMC.
