Using a pump in reverse mode as a hydraulic turbine remains an alternative for hydropower generation in meeting energy needs, especially for the provision of electricity to remote and rural settlements. The primary challenge with small hydroelectric systems is attributed to the high price of smaller size hydraulic turbines. A specific commercial pump model, with a flow rate of 12.5 m3/h, head 32 m, pressure side diameter of 50 mm, impeller out, and inlet diameters of 160 mm and 6 mm, respectively, was chosen for this research. This research aimed to investigate a pump’s flow characteristics as a turbine to help select a suitable pump to be used as a turbine for micro- or small hydropower construction. Numerical methodologies have been adopted to contribute to the thoughtful knowledge of pressure and velocity distribution in the pump turbine performance. In this study, the unsteady flow relations amongst the rotating impeller and stationary volute of the centrifugal pump made up four blades and four splitters. Intermittent simulation results of pressure and velocity flow characteristics were studied considering diverse impeller suction angles. The study was conducted by considering a wide range of rotational speeds starting from 750 rpm to 3250 rpm. From the results, it was found that PAT operation was improved when operated at low speeds compared to high-speed operation. Thus, speeds between 1500 rpm and 2000 rpm were suitable for PAT performance. This research helps to realize the unsteady flow physiognomies, which provide information for future research on PAT. This study makes useful facts available which could be helpful for the pump turbine development. Future studies should focus on cost analysis and emission generation in energy generation.

Abstract Perpendicular injection of liquid jets into gaseous crossflow is well-known as an effective way to obtain good mixing between liquid fuel and air crossflow. Mostly, injectors with circular holes were used as the standard method of fuel spraying. However, recently a great attention to injectors with non-circular holes has emerged that aims to improve the quality of fuel mixing and consequently combustion efficiency. In the present work, rectangular injectors with different aspect ratios varying from 1 to 4 were experimentally studied. Using a wind tunnel with maximum air velocity of 42 m/s, tests were performed for a wide range of flow conditions including liquid-to-air momentum ratios of 10, 20, 30 and 40. Backlight shadowgraphy and high speed photography were employed to capture the instantaneous physics of the liquid jets discharged into gaseous crossflow. The flow physics of the rectangular liquid jets were investigated by means of flow visualizations. Different regimes of flow breakup including capillary, arcade, bag and multimode were observed for rectangular jets. Moreover, a new technique was used to calculate the trajectory of the liquid jets. It was shown the nozzle’s shape has no significant effect on jet trajectory. Also, the momentum ratio was found to has a profound effect on jet trajectory.

Abstract Fog formation occurs in the process of condensation in the presence of non-condensable gas if the bulk temperature is lower than its saturation temperature (supersaturated). The phenomena of fogging is the formation of small condensate particles mixing with the vapor/gas stream, which creates potential problems of the vapor/gas/condensate separation and environmental pollution. Therefore, understanding of fogging mechanism and prevention of fog droplet entrainment are one of technical concerns for design and operation of cooler-condensers in the process industry. This paper presents the experimental study and numerical simulation of shell-side condensation with fog formation using a mixture of steam/non-condensable gas. The experimental data were collected on the two tube bundles (modified plastic tubes and stainless steel tubes). Using a high-speed photograph technique, the phenomenon of fog formation and flow characteristics of vapor/droplet transport were recorded over a wide range of test conditions. The numerical analysis of film and dropwise condensation, fog formation and droplet particle transport were simulated using different tube geometry and material, and flow velocity of air/droplet mixture. Based on simulation results, a new droplet trapping parameter is proposed to assess the optimal parameters of heat exchanger structural and operation conditions. Comparisons show that the numerical analysis results have a good agreement with experimental data and observations. These findings provide fundamental approach to account for the effect of fog formation, film and dropwise condensation, and droplet transport crossflow in cooler-condensers.

The main goal of the present work is to analyse the numerical simulation of a centrifugal pump by solving Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with the ‘standard k-∊’ turbulence model. The pump consists of an impeller having five curved blades with nine diffuser vanes. The shaft rotates at 890r/min. Flow characteristics are assumed to be stalled in the appropriate region of flowrate levels of 1.31-2.861/s. Numerical analysis techniques are performed on a commercial FLUENT package program assuming steady, incompressible flow conditions with decreasing flowrate. Under stall conditions the flow in the diffuser passage alternates between outward jetting when the low-pass-filtered pressure is high to a reverse flow when the filtered pressure is low. Being below design conditions, there is a consistent high-speed leakage flow in the gap between the impeller and the diffuser from the exit side of the diffuser to the beginning of the volute. Separation of this leakage flow from the diffuser vane causes the onset of stall. As the flowrate decreases both the magnitude of the leakage within the vaneless part of the pump and reverse flow within a stalled diffuser passage increase. As this occurs, the stall-cell size extends from one to two diffuser passages. Comparisons are made with experimental data and show good agreement.

A relationship between the global variables and the dynamic flow structure numerically obtained for a low specific speed centrifugal pump is presented in this paper. A previously developed unsteady flow model is used to correlate the dynamic field with the flow characteristics inside the impeller and volute of a single-stage commercial pump. Actually, the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved within a 3D unsteady flow model. A sliding mesh technique is applied to take into account the impeller-volute interaction. After the numerical model has been successfully compared with the experimental data for the unsteady pressure fluctuations pattern in the volute shroud, a new step is proposed in order to correlate the observed effects with the flow structure inside the pump. In particular, the torque as a function of the relative position of the impeller blades is related to the blades loading, and the secondary flow in the volute is related to the different pressure patterns numerically obtained. Local flow analysis and qualitative study of the helicity in different volute sections is performed. The main goal of the study presented is the successful correlation of local and global parameters for the flow in a centrifugal pump. The pressure forces seem to be the main driven mechanism to establish the flow features both in the impeller and volute, for a wide range of operating conditions.

The composition of sewage water with partially large portions of fibers and solids requires a special pump design, in order to avoid operational disturbances by clogging. In most applications for sewage water transport, single-stage pumps with single-blade impellers are used. With this special impeller geometry largest flow channels can be realized. So fibers and solids up to an appropriate size can be transported by the pump. This minimum impeller blade number however brings disadvantages for pump operation. The development of a pressure and a suction surface of the blade gives an asymmetric pressure distribution at the perimeter of the rotor outlet and a periodically unsteady flow field arises. In a numerical approach the time accurate flow in a single-blade centrifugal pump has been calculated by solving the 3-dimensional time dependent Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS) in a wide range of pump operation. The investigation of the flow included all details between suction flange and pressure flange of the pump. The numerical results show a strong dependence from impeller position for all flow parameters. For the investigated operating points strong vortices have been obtained at particular impeller positions. Experimental results have been used to verify the numerical results of time dependent flow in the single-blade pump. The computed flow field has been compared to results which were obtained from optical measurements of flow velocities by Particle Image Velocimetry at different impeller positions. A very good qualitative agreement between measurements and calculations has been obtained for all investigated operating points.

The instability of the no-load working condition of the pump turbine directly affects the grid connection of the unit, and will cause vibration and damage to the components of the unit in severe cases. In this paper, a three-dimensional full flow numerical model including the runner gap and the pressure-balance pipe was established. The method SST k-ω model was used to predict the internal flow characteristics of the pump turbine. The pressure pulsation of the runner under different operating conditions during the no-load process was compared. Because the rotation speed, flow rate, and guide vane opening of the unit change in a small range during the no-load process, the pressure pulsation characteristics of the runner are basically the same. Therefore, a working condition was selected to analyze the transient characteristics of the flow field, and it was found that there was a high-speed ring in the vaneless zone, and a stable channel vortex was generated in the runner flow passage. Analyzing the axial water thrust of each part of the runner, it was found that the axial water thrust of the runner gap was much larger than the axial water thrust of the runner blades, and it changed with time periodically. It was affected by rotor stator interaction. The main frequency was expressed as a multiple of the number of guide vanes, that is, vanes passing frequency, 22fn. During the entire no-load process, the axial water thrust of the runner changed slowly with time and fluctuated slightly.

Centrifugal pump is a kind of important industrial installation for fluid delivery. The research on the unsteady flow in centrifugal pump is very meaningful to reducing vibration. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) system and test pump designed for PIV measurement were introduced. The experimental scheme and the methods of numerical simulation were discussed. PIV technique was used to measure the unsteady velocity field near the volute tongue under the mode of external synchronization. The unsteady pressure field was simulated by using Sliding Mesh (SM) model provided by Fluent. The results show that the velocity and pressure fluctuate periodically with the rotation of impeller. Partial fluid flows back to the impeller passage and the velocity in the inlet of diffusion tube decreases significantly due to shunt effect of the volute tongue. On the section VIII, the magnitude and fluctuation range of velocity show a decreasing trend in radial direction. The fluctuation of circumferential velocity is related to the position of high-speed flow in impeller passage, and the fluctuation of radial velocity is influenced by blade interference and Coriolis force. The static pressure increases and the dynamic pressure decreases in the radial direction of volute. The velocity and the pressure on the section VIII and the outlet total pressure fluctuate intensively when the blade tail end passes the section VIII and the volute tongue. The vibration of pump can be reduced by increasing the volute tongue mounting angle and decreasing the blade outlet mounting angle properly.
