Integration of renewable energy sources to the grid-connected system has influenced scholarly research in recent times to evolve solutions for power electronic conversion. Particularly, solar photovoltaic (SPV), being a resource available throughout the year, demands needful research to meet the demand for industrial applications. To facilitate SPV, multilevel inverters (MLIs) and cascaded H-bridge inverters (CHBIs) are proposed in the literature to meet the power requirement. However, these circuits suffer from efficiency loss, economic aspects of DC sources usage, and switching losses. Hence, in this research, a new power converter topology is projected to improve the overall efficiency of SPV systems. Further, a three-level approach involving (i) SPV Panel-Temperature Reduction (SPV-PTR) Setup, (ii) Boost Multilevel Direct Current Link Converter (BMLDCLC), and (iii) use of effective snubber modules (SM) are effectively handled to promote the industry readiness of the proposed system. From a detailed system investigation, it is seen that the proposed arrangement has minimized the power loss to ensure better quality in output. Furthermore, the software-based results and hardware setup of the planned comprehensive converter have shown promising results in terms of (i) reduced voltage stress, (ii) reduced total harmonic distortion (THD) without filter component, and (iii) reduced power loss. It is observed that the experimental setup has reported a 12.9% of excess heat removal, 5% decrease in harmonics, and 33% switch reduction than the existing MLI schemes. In addition, the proposed setup is suggested to apply for industrial purposes indicate its efficacy to be a solution in real time.

This paper deals with a reduced switch multi-level inverter for the solar photovoltaic system-based 127-level multi-level inverter. The proposed technique uses the minimum number of switches to achieve the maximum steps in staircase AC output voltage when compared to the flying capacitor multi-level inverter, cascaded type multilevel inverter and diode clamped multi-level inverter. The use of a minimum number of switches decreases the cost of the system. To eliminate the switching losses, in this topology a square wave switch is used instead of pulse width modulation. Thereby the total harmonic distortion (THD) and harmonics have been reduced in the pulsating AC output voltage waveform. The performance of 127-level MLI is compared with 15 level, 31-level and 63-level multilevel inverters. The outcomes of the solar photovoltaic system-based 127-level multi-level inverter have been simulated in a MATLAB R2009b environment.

Multilevel inverters (MLIs) have been extensively used and gained interest over last few decades in industrial and grid connected renewable energy applications because of its numerous merits. Besides various advantages like obtaining reduced harmonic distortion and lesser dv/dt stress across switches it has the capability of generating any number of levels. The theory of multilevel concept was initiated for high power and high/medium voltage applications as they are helpful in interfacing with renewable energy sources. By proper combination of the switches it generates a stair case output with reduced harmonic distortion because of this MLI is widely used and it became one of the advanced power converter topology. The rise of new topologies has attained importance over conventional multilevel inverter topologies, which generates more number of levels with reduced switch components. This paper presents various conventional MLI topologies and hybrid MLI topologies for renewable energy applications. Also, this review paper includes different modulation strategies which plays an important role to improve the overall performance of MLI.

A fuzzy control system has been widely used in various problem solving. Its performance can be optimized using particle swarm optimization (PSO). This performance can be proven by applying it to the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy on solar photovoltaic systems. Solar photovoltaic power generation systems are increasingly popular because they are clean and renewable energy sources. The power generated by solar photovoltaic is strongly influenced by solar irradiation and the load carried. In order to obtain maximum power output, an MPPT control strategy is needed. An MPPT control strategy based on fuzzy and PSO hybrid control systems is proposed in this research. The fuzzy-PSO method selects and produces the optimal duty cycle for the boost dc-dc converter in a solar photovoltaic system. Variable duty cycle due to solar irradiation and load changes can be conditioned by the fuzzy-PSO-based MPPT method to extract maximum power. The research results show that the fuzzy-PSO method can control the solar photovoltaic output voltage through a dc-dc converter to produce maximum power at various solar irradiations. Test result by applying a resistive load produces output power at the maximum point. The best result is obtained in the 100 Ohm load test: the response time of 0.0818 seconds and excellent robustness.

In this paper a novel 5 switch seven level DC-AC inverter is being proposed. The proposed multilevel inverter uses reduced number of switches as compared to the switches used in the conventional multilevel inverter. The inverter has been designed to generate a 7 level AC output using 5 switches. The voltage stress on each of the switches as well as the switching losses is found to be less, minimized common mode voltage (CMV) level and reduced total harmonic distortion. The proposed 7-level inverter topology has four dc sources, which is energized through the PV system. Proposed inverter is controlled with help of multicarrier sinusoidal pulse width modulation (MCSPWM).The simulation and hardware results were verified using matlab simulink and dspic microcontroller respectively.

The installation of small-scale solar photovoltaic system has recently gaining popularity in Malaysia mainly driven by the Feed-in Tariff scheme. Given its relatively small generation capacity, the single-phase solar inverters are not required to comply with power quality standard. Neverthelss, the impact of small-scale solar system on the grid could become significant when the penetration is increasing over the years. In this regard, this paper presents a case study on the influence of single-phase grid-connected solar photovoltaic systems on the total harmonic distortion for current at the point of common coupling. Field measurements have been carried out for a total of 12 single-phase solar systems which were installed at three different locations at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. Detailed analyses have been performed to characterize the aggregated current harmonic performance for the overall system. The findings from the presented case study suggest that the current quality from the inverter is highly dependent on the level of inverter output. Hence, the proper selection of the array-to-inverter ratio at the system design stage could greatly improve the overall total harmonic performance performance for current. The installation of small-scale solar photovoltaic system has recently gaining popularity in Malaysia mainly driven by the Feed-in Tariff scheme. Multilevel power converters are becoming increasingly used in several sectors: energy, grid-tie renewable energy systems, High voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission, and a multitude of industrial applications. However, the multilevel converters consist of several drives and a high number of power switches, which leads to a considerable cost and an increased size of the device. Thus, a novel topology of a multilevel bidirectional inverter using a reduced number of semiconductor power components is proposed in this paper. Without any diode clamped or flying capacitor, only nine switches are used to generate nine voltage levels in this new topology. The proposed multilevel converter is compared with the conventional structures in terms of cost, the number of active power switches, clamped diodes, flying capacitors, DC floating capacitors, and the number of DC voltage sources. This comparative analysis shows that the proposed topology is suitable for many applications. For optimum control of this multilevel voltage inverter and to reduce switching losses in power semiconductors, a hybrid modulation technique based on fundamental frequency modulation and multi-carrier-based sinusoidal pulse-width modulation schemes is performed. The effectiveness of the proposed multilevel power converter is verified by simulation results.

A new bidirectional multilevel inverter topology with a high number of voltage levels with a very reduced number of power components is proposed in this paper. Only TEN power switches and four asymmetric DC voltage sources are used to generate 25 voltage levels in this new topology. The proposed multilevel converter is more suitable for e-mobility and photovoltaic applications where the overall energy source can be composed of a few units/associations of several basic source modules. Several benefits are provided by this new topology: Highly sinusoidal current and voltage waveforms, low Total Harmonic Distortion, very low switching losses, and minimum cost and size of the device. For optimum control of this 25-level voltage inverter, a special Modified Hybrid Modulation technique is performed. The proposed 25-level inverter is compared to various topologies published recently in terms of cost, the number of active power switches, clamped diodes, flying capacitors, DC floating capacitors, and the number of DC voltage sources. This comparison clearly shows that the proposed topology is cost-effective, compact, and very efficient. The effectiveness and the good performance of the proposed multilevel power converter (with and without PWM control) are verified and checked by computational simulations.
