The material mechanical properties and crack propagation behavior of dissimilar metal welded joint (DMWJ) of pressurized water reactor (PWR) was investigated. In this research, the mechanical parameters of the cladding layer materials (304L-SA508) of the DMWJ in PWRs were obtained by the continuous indentation test. Simultaneously, the user-defined (USDFLD) subroutine in ABAQUS was used to establish the heterogeneous materials model of the welded joint. On this basis, the local crack propagation path of DMWJs has been discussed based on the extended finite element method (XFEM). The result indicated that the strength value at the fusion boundary line (FB line) is the largest, and the yield strength reaches 689 MPa. The yield stress values of the cladding metal (304 L) and base metal (SA508) are 371 MPa and 501 MPa, respectively. Affected by the material constraint effect of the DMWJ, the crack will propagate through the FB line when the initial crack is perpendicular to the FB line. And when the initial crack parallels the FB line, the crack will deviate from it. Meanwhile, the crack propagation length is smaller as the initial crack tip is closer to the FB line when the load condition is constant.

In this work, the role of long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase in the crack propagation behavior of an as-cast Mg95.5Y3Zn1.5 alloy was investigated by dynamic four-point bent tests. The as-cast Mg95.5Y3Zn1.5 alloy is mainly composed of Mg matrix, 18R LPSO phase located at the grain boundaries and 14H LPSO phase located within the Mg matrix. The alloy exhibits excellent dynamic mechanical properties; the yield stress, maximum stress and strain to failure are 190.51 ± 3.52 MPa, 378.32 ± 4.26 MPa and 0.168 ± 0.006, respectively, at the strain rate of ~3000 s−1. The LPSO phase effectively hinders dynamic crack propagation in four typical ways, including crack tip blunting, crack opening inhibition, crack deflection and crack bridging, which are beneficial to the mechanical properties of the alloy under dynamic loadings.

Environmental fatigue crack propagation of CF8M and CF8A steels used in the domestic nuclear power plants (NPPs) were investigated on the simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) condition (temperature: 316°C, pressure: 15MPa). The test equipment for environmental fatigue (high temperature-high pressure loop, autoclave, load frame, and measurement system) was designed. As-received and 60-year aged specimens were used in the test. To compare with environmental fatigue test, another test in the air condition was performed. The fracture surfaces of specimens were difficult to verify the fracture modes such as striation, inter-granular crack and cleavage and so on. As the ferrite content of CF8M is increased, more particles on the fracture surface were peeled.
