This study presented an empirical correlation to estimate the drilling rate of penetration (ROP) while drilling into a sandstone formation. The equation developed in this study was based on the artificial neural networks (ANN) which was learned to assess the ROP from the drilling mechanical parameters. The ANN model was trained on 630 datapoints collected from five different wells; the suggested equation was then tested on 270 datapoints from the same training wells and then validated on three other wells. The results showed that, for the training data, the learned ANN model predicted the ROP with an AAPE of 7.5%. The extracted equation was tested on data gathered from the same training wells where it estimated the ROP with AAPE of 8.1%. The equation was then validated on three wells, and it determined the ROP with AAPEs of 9.0%, 10.7%, and 8.9% in Well-A, Well-B, and Well-D, respectively. Compared with the available empirical equations, the equation developed in this study was most accurate in estimating the ROP.

The main objective of this study is to develop a rate of penetration (ROP) model for Khasib formation in Ahdab oil field and determine the drilling parameters controlling the prediction of ROP values by using artificial neural network (ANN).      An Interactive Petrophysical software was used to convert the raw dataset of transit time (LAS Readings) from parts of meter-to-meter reading with depth. The IBM SPSS statistics software version 22 was used to create an interconnection between the drilling variables and the rate of penetration, detection of outliers of input parameters, and regression modeling. While a JMP Version 11 software from SAS Institute Inc. was used for artificial neural modeling.      The proposed artificial neural network method depends on obtaining the input data from drilling mud logging data and wireline logging data. The data then analyzes it to create an interconnection between the drilling variables and the rate of penetration.      The proposed ANN model consists of an input layer, hidden layer and outputs layer, while it applies the tangent function (TanH) as a learning and training algorithm in the hidden layer. Finally, the predicted values of ROP are compared with the measured values. The proposed ANN model is more efficient than the multiple regression analysis in predicting ROP. The obtained coefficient of determination (R2) values using the ANN technique are 0.93 and 0.91 for training and validation sets, respectively. This study presents a new model for predicting ROP values in comparison with other conventional drilling measurements.

The present work aims to test the potential of the application of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for food authentication. For this purpose, honey was chosen as the working matrix. The samples were originated from two countries: Romania (50) and France (53), having as floral origins: acacia, linden, honeydew, colza, galium verum, coriander, sunflower, thyme, raspberry, lavender and chestnut. The ANNs were built on the isotope and elemental content of the investigated honey samples. This approach conducted to the development of a prediction model for geographical recognition with an accuracy of 96%. Alongside this work, distinct models were developed and tested, with the aim of identifying the most suitable configurations for this application. In this regard, improvements have been continuously performed; the most important of them consisted in overcoming the unwanted phenomenon of over-fitting, observed for the training data set. This was achieved by identifying appropriate values for the number of iterations over the training data and for the size and number of the hidden layers and by introducing of a dropout layer in the configuration of the neural structure. As a conclusion, ANNs can be successfully applied in food authenticity control, but with a degree of caution with respect to the “over optimization” of the correct classification percentage for the training sample set, which can lead to an over-fitted model.

The concentration of carbonyl is one of the most important properties contributing to the detection of the thermal aging of polymer ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM). In this publication, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to predict concentration of carbenyl during the thermal aging of EPDM using a database consisting of seven input variables. The best fitting training data was obtained with the architecture of (7 inputs neurons, 10 hidden neurons and 1 output neuron). A Levenberg Marquardt learning (LM) algorithm, hyperbolic tangent transfer function were used at the hidden and output layer respectively. The optimal ANN was obtained with a high correlation coefficient R= 0.995 and a very low root mean square error RMSE = 0.0148 mol/l during the generalization phase. The comparison between the experimental and calculated results show that the ANN model is able of predicted the concentration of carbonyl during the thermal aging of ethylene propylene diene monomer

The drilling rate of penetration (ROP) is defined as the speed of drilling through rock under the bit. ROP is affected by different interconnected factors, which makes it very difficult to infer the mutual effect of each individual parameter. A robust ROP is required to understand the complexity of the drilling process. Therefore, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to predict ROP and capture the effect of the changes in the drilling parameters. Field data (4525 points) from three vertical onshore wells drilled in the same formation using the same conventional bottom hole assembly were used to train, test, and validate the ANN model. Data from Well A (1528 points) were utilized to train and test the model with a 70/30 data ratio. Data from Well B and Well C were used to test the model. An empirical equation was derived based on the weights and biases of the optimized ANN model and compared with four ROP models using the data set of Well C. The developed ANN model accurately predicted the ROP with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.94 and an average absolute percentage error (AAPE) of 8.6%. The developed ANN model outperformed four existing models with the lowest AAPE and highest R value.

The producing M. australis Sandstone of the Stag Oil Field is a bioturbated glauconitic sandstone that is difficult to evaluate using conventional methods. Well log and core data are available for the Stag Field and for the nearby Centaur–1 well. Eight wells have log data; six also have core data.In the past few years artificial intelligence has been applied to formation evaluation. In particular, artificial neural networks (ANN) used to match log and core data have been studied. The ANN approach has been used to analyse the producing Stag Field sands. In this paper, new ways of applying the ANN are reported. Results from simple ANN approach are unsatisfactory. An integrated ANN approach comprising the unsupervised Self-Organising Map (SOM) and the Supervised Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) appears to give a more reasonable analysis. In this case study the mineralogical and petrophysical characteristics of a cored well are predicted from the 'training' data set of the other cored wells in the field. The prediction from the ANN model is then used for comparison with the known core data. In this manner, the accuracy of the prediction is determined and a prediction qualifier computed. This new approach to formation evaluation should provide a match between log and core data that may be used to predict the characteristics of a similar uncored interval. Although the results for the Stag Field are satisfactory, further study applying the method to other fields is required.
