This article aims at problematizing the boundaries of what counts as focus group and in so doing it identifies some continuity between focus group and workshop, especially when it comes to arts informed and activity laden focus groups. The workshop [1] is often marginalized as a legitimate method for qualitative data collection outside PAR (Participatory Action Research)-based methodologies. Using examples from our research projects in East Africa and in London we argue that there are areas of overlap between these two methods, yet we tend to use concepts and definitions associated with focus groups because of the lack of visibility of workshops in qualitative research methods academic literature. The article argues that focus groups and workshops present a series of intertwined features resulting in a blending of the two which needs further exploration. In problematizing the boundaries of focus groups and recognizing the increasing usage of art-based and activity-based processes for the production of qualitative data during focus groups, we argue that focus groups and workshop are increasingly converging. We use a specifically feminist epistemology in order to critically unveil the myth around the non-hierarchical nature of consensus and group interaction during focus group discussions and other multi-vocal qualitative methods and contend that more methodological research should be carried out on the workshop as a legitimate qualitative data collection technique situated outside the cycle of action research.

Objective:Adolescents with cancer pose a unique challenge to current health systems and the professional working with them. Throughout the world, it is increasingly recognized that the needs of this particular group of patients may not be met through existing services within either the pediatric or adult systems. In Australia, this is a new area of research, and little is known about the unmet physical, psychological, and social needs of this patient group. This study reports the outcomes of a focus group conducted to explore these issues.Methods:Six young people, with a mean age at diagnosis of 17 years and 6 months, participated in a 2-h focus group. A qualitative analytic approach was utilized to examine themes.Results:The participants identified a number of concerns relating to three broad categories: information provision, treatment processes, and survivorship.Significance of results:The research findings support previously documented evidence that indicate gaps in cancer services provided to this age group. Importantly, these gaps can be narrowed by improving access to adolescent multidisciplinary teams and introducing specific training for health care professionals.

The diagnosis of patients with rare diseases is often delayed. A Clinical Decision Support System using similarity analysis of patient-based data may have the potential to support the diagnosis of patients with rare diseases. This qualitative study has the objective to investigate how the result of a patient similarity analysis should be presented to a physician to enable diagnosis support. We conducted a focus group with physicians practicing in rare diseases as well as medical informatics researchers. To prepare the focus group, a literature search was performed to check the current state of research regarding visualization of similar patients. We then created software-mockups for the presentation of these visualization methods for the discussion within the focus group. Two persons took independently field notes for data collection of the focus group. A questionnaire was distributed to the participants to rate the visualization methods. The results show that four visualization methods are promising for the visualization of similar patients: “Patient on demand table”, “Criteria selection”, “Time-Series chart” and “Patient timeline. “Patient on demand table” shows a direct comparison of patient characteristics, whereas “Criteria selection” allows the selection of different patient criteria to get deeper insights into the data. The “Time-Series chart” shows the time course of clinical parameters (e.g. blood pressure) whereas a “Patient timeline” indicates which time events exist for a patient (e.g. several symptoms on different dates). In the future, we will develop a software-prototype of the Clinical Decision Support System to include the visualization methods and evaluate the clinical usage.

A new group of medically fragile young adults are graduating from pediatric palliative care programs with limited expectations to live beyond early adulthood, and no comparable adult services to support their complex needs. Accessing this population is difficult because of the complexity of their conditions, the extensive personal and equipment supports that limit feasibility for travel, and divergent communication abilities. Therefore, we undertook a descriptive case study using an asynchronous modification of an online focus group, a bulletin board focus group (BBFG). The greatest strengths of the BBFG are the appeal of this methodology for young adults and the multi day focus group becomes both a community and an intervention. An important limitation of this method was participant follow through on discussion threads. This BBFG provided rich and varied types of data, and very positive participant experiences.

El ser humano pasa por varias etapas en su vida, desde la prenatal hasta la ancianidad, esta última descrita por algunos como tercera edad o edad de oro, es una de las más importantes y agradable a nivel social y personal; por tal motivo, el presente estudio pretende analizar la programación dedicada al adulto mayor dentro de la parrilla televisiva Guayaquileña.Uno de los principales temas que conlleva a la realización de este estudio es la ausencia de programación de calidad orientada al adulto mayor en canales locales, otro de los puntos considerados es el incremento de esta parte de la población a nivel mundial durante los últimos años,  y la real necesidad de atención hacia este mercado emergente.Para desarrollar el estudio se plantea una metodología de investigación inclusiva, con la finalidad de recolectar información de fuentes primaria, para lo cual se utilizó encuestas adultos mayores, entrevistos a expertos del tema y focus group a los adultos mayores de la ciudad de Guayaquil. En base a los fundamentos teóricos y la información recolectada se indican conclusiones importantes del estudio y se logra determinar una posible parrilla de programación local acorde a las necesidades reales del grupo estudiado.

La investigación tiene como objetivo determinar las representaciones que tienen los profesores en formación de Historia, Geografía y Ciencias Sociales respecto del pueblo mapuche. Con un enfoque cualitativo y a través del uso de focus group a 40 estudiantes, se concluye que la problemática mapuche no ha logrado ser relevada dentro de su formación inicial, aun cuando consideran que es una temática necesaria de trabajar en el contexto de la educación secundaria.
