The deliberate killing of a foetus in the womb, or a child from the first 24 h of birth to one month of age, or within the first year of life, is called foeticide, neonaticide and infanticide, respectively. Socioeconomic stress, mental illness, gender selection, shame or fear of punishment of adultery or illegitimacy, grudge and jealousy with parents and negligent delivery by dai are major causative factors in such cases. This is a retrospective, descriptive, observational study, and the sample pool consisted of 35 cases. Foeticide cases were 42.9% of the total and the same percentage of cases were neonaticides, while 14.3% of cases were of infanticide. The male-to-female ratio was 1.26:1 and the major cause of death was head injury. The study shows a prevalence of foeticide and neonaticide as compared to infanticide. It also displays the prevalence of males in overall cases and a higher number of unknown cases in our setting.

Background: Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare and heterogeneous group of malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin that comprise less than 1 percent of all adult malignancies. Although they occur anywhere in the body, they involve most commonly in extremities, trunk, retroperitoneum and head and neck. The aim of the study was to analyze clinical and histopathological features of various soft tissue sarcomas. Methods: This was a retrospective study, conducted in tertiary cancer centre in Odisha during the period 2015 to 2018. We collected clinical parameters like age, sex, site of swelling, any associated pain and biopsy reports and these variables were correlated with final histopathology reports. Results: A total of 107 patients were included in the study, with male to female ratio of 2:1(71 and 36) and average age of 43.45 years. All of them presented with a swelling. The lower extremities were the most common sites i.e. 44.62%. Pleomorphic sarcoma was the most frequent histologic variety comprising 43% and less frequent variety were angiosarcoma, and myxoid sarcoma. Conclusions: Soft tissue sarcoma are predominant in males and middle aged population are frequently affected. Most common affected site is lower extremity and pleomorphic sarcoma is the prominent histologic type.

Obstructive jaundice is a condition in which there is blockage of the flow of bile out of the liver. To find out the correlation between clinical diagnosis and operative findings of patients having obstructive jaundice. This prospective observational study was conducted at the Department of Surgery, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka from January 2008 to April 2009. Fifty clinically diagnosed obstructive jaundice cases were enrolled in this study. A detailed history was taken and thorough physical examination was done. Also necessary haematological, biochemical, radiological and other special investigations were carried out.  In this study, mean age of the patients was 42.9 years and male to female ratio was 1:1.17. The most frequent cause was choledocholithiasis (40%), stricture of CBD (6.0%), retained stone (14.0%), parasitic obstruction (4.0%), carcinoma (30.0%) and other cause (6.0%). Serum bilirubin level was below 10mg/dl in all cases of stricture of CBD. It was above 15mg/dL in cases of carcinoma head of the pancreas. The rise of Serum alkaline phosphates level was up to 3 folds in cases with choledocholithiasis, biliary stricture and pancreatic head malignancy. The average rise in other cases was 1 to 2 folds. Sensitivity and specificity of pre operative clinical diagnosis of choledocholithiasis, carcinoma and retain stone was 86.4 & 96.4%, 92.3 & 91.9% and 71.4 & 95.3% respectively. Pre operative clinical diagnosis of obstructive jaundice is a good diagnosis tool in diagnosis of causes of obstructive jaundice. Bangladesh Med J. 2018 Jan; 47 (1): 33-36

Accidents are not due to external factors all the time but often they occur due to failure of control of self-conscience and free thoughts. Road Traffic Accidents is still the major cause of death worldwide including India. A retrospective study has been conducted in Dr. S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur (Raj.), in the year 2019 to study the pattern and distribution of Head Injuries of fatal road traffic accidents and to prepare the demographic profile of it. Out of total 901 cases, male to female ratio was 9:1, and commonest age group affected was 21-30 years (39.8%). Among total victims, Hindus were 748 (83%) and rests were Muslims 103 (11.4%) and other religions. Head injury was the most common injury, present alone in 509 cases (56.4%) and in 392 (43.6) cases along with other injuries. Skull fractures were found in 451 (50.5), in which linear/fissure fracture (32.9%) was most common. Most common bone fractured was temporal bone. The commonest variety of intracranial hemorrhage was subdural hemorrhage and craniotomy was done in 29 (3.2%) cases. Keywords: Accidents, Road traffic, Head injury, Fractures.

Facial acanthosis nigricans (FAN) is an ignored dermatological entity. Nowadays it occurs more frequently than previous days may be due to changing economic and social status of our country. Aim of this study was to assess the rate of metabolic syndrome in cases of facial acanthosis nigricans. This observational study was conducted in the outpatient department (OPD) of dermatology and Venereology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in the year 2017 among thirty clinically diagnosed cases of FAN. After taking their informed written consent; BMI, random plasma glucose, fasting lipid profile and serum insulin level was estimated in venous blood and recorded accordingly. To confirm metabolic syndrome we followed NCEP ATP III guideline (2005) where 3 of 5 positive criteria confirmed the diagnosis. All data was preserved in a secured computer device and was analyzed with SPSS program with appropriate statistical tools. Mean (±SD) age of patients was 35.63 ± 14.26 years and male to female ratio was 1:1.14. The mean BMI of cases was 33.73±3. We found 11 cases with hypertension, 8 with type II diabetes mellitus and 9 with dyslipidemia. Among the 30 cases of FAN 12 zygomatic type, 8 generalized type and 5 had band like pigmentation on the forehead. Twenty-three patients had acanthosis nigricans on both sides of body. According to our preset criteria we found 26.66% cases had metabolic syndrome. The rate of metabolic syndrome is higher in facial acanthosis nigricans patients. A further large scale study is recommended for strengthening this study findings. Bangladesh Med J. 2018 May; 47 (2): 12-16

Background Epilepsy in cerebral palsy (CP) is usually difficult to treat and can lead to poor prognosis due to increased risk for motor and cognitive disorders. The prevalence and risk factors of epilepsy in children with CP vary among studies. Objective To determine the prevalence and risk factors for epilepsy in spastic CP.Methods We performed a retrospective study using medical records of patients with spastic CP at the Departement of Child Health, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital from January 2003 until December 2008. Prevalence ratio was calculated by comparing the prevalence of epilepsy in subjects with and without risk factors. We excluded patients with metabolic disorder, genetic syndrome, and onset of CP after 3 years of age. Results Two hundred thirty six out of 238 spastic CP patients were analyzed. The mean age at diagnosis of spastic CP was 28.8 months. Male to female ratio was 1.4:1. The prevalence of epilepsy in spastic CP was 39%. The risk factors for epilepsy in spastic CP were central nervous system infection, the ocurrence of seizure in the first year of life, and abnormality of EE G.Conclusions The prevalence of epilepsy in spastic CP is 39%. The risk factors for epilepsy in spastic CP are post central nervous system infection, and ocurrence of seizure in the first year of life. [Paediatr Indones. 2010;50:11-7].

AbstractDescribing the sex ratio, age structure of the population and ontogenetic variability of Red fox, Vulpes vulpes (Canidae, Carnivora) skull parameters, this study is based on 416 male and 289 female skulls collected in the Czech Republic. The skulls analysed came from feral individuals, that were shot by hunters. The male to female ratio was 1:0.69 regarding the whole population. Individuals younger than one year prevailed in the population (54% males, 48% females were in their first year of life). Four growth patterns of skull dimensions were described. The first group included mainly skull length dimensions (e.g. condylobasal length). They grew rapidly until the sixth month of life, becoming stabilised afterwards. The second group comprised parameters that were stable throughout the life (e.g. cheek tooth rows). Measurements representing the third growth pattern showed continual growth (mainly width dimensions, e.g. zygomatic breadth). Conversely, smaller dimensions of postorbital breadth were observed after the sixth month of life. Postorbital breadth represented the fourth growth pattern. It was concluded, that male and female Red foxes had similar ontogenetic skull development, even though there were some differences, e.g. in jugular breadth, which increased after the age of six months in males unlike in females.

Lichen Planus (LP) is an inflammatory disorder of skin, mucous membranes, nails and hair. There are various modalities of treatment but none is curative. This prospective therapeutic trial was done among patients with lichen planus at the outpatient department of Dermatology & Venereology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka between November 2001 and April 2002. Total 20 patients were taken of them 12 were male and 8 were female with male to female ratio 3:2. Age of the patients was between 10 to 50 years. Patients were diagnosed clinically & confirmed histologically. They were treated with griseofulvin 500 mg daily for 6 months. Out of 20 patients, 8 had only oral lesions, of them 2 (25%) showed complete response, 3(37.5%) showed moderate improvement and 4 (37.5%) showed no response. Other 12 patients had lichen planus involving skin without oral mucosa, of them 4 (33.3%) showed moderate improvement, 4 (33.3%) showed no response and 4 (33.3%) patients worsens with treatment. So, success in patients with cutaneous lichen planus is less likely; however, griseofulvin may afford relief in selected patients with oral lesion. This study indicates that further prospective placebo controlled studies are needed to clarify the efficacy of griseofulvin in lichen planus. This review examines 197 cases of fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) described in the literature and provides a detailed clinicopathologic analysis of what is known to date of this peculiar lesion of the subcutis and lower dermis. The vast majority of these cases occurred within the first year of life (91%). Twenty-three percent were congenital. There was a predilection for boys with a male/female ratio of 2.4. Males and females had similar anatomic distribution with the most common locations being the axillary region, upper arm, upper trunk, inguinal region, and external genital area. Most cases presented as solitary masses, but four cases of multiple separate synchronous lesions have been reported. Most lesions presented as a painless nodule, sometimes with rapid growth. A few cases had overlying skin changes, including alteration in pigmentation, eccrine gland hyperplasia, and increased hair. No lesions were reported to have familial or syndromic association, or to occur in combination with other hamartomas. Spontaneous regression has not been reported. The treatment of choice is local excision. Even with incomplete excision, FHI has a low recurrence rate. Criteria for histologic diagnosis include the presence of well-defined bundles of dense, uniform, fibrous connective tissue projecting into fat, primitive mesenchyme arranged in nests, concentric whorls or bands, and mature adipose tissue intimately admixed with the other components. Flow-cytometric and conventional cytogenetic studies have not been reported; these may clarify any relationship to other fibroblastic/myofibroblastic proliferations in children, resulting in better classification and terminology of this unique lesion.
