The purpose of the research was to investigate the effects of including potato peels (PP) in broilers diet with exogenous enzymes supplementation on feed intake (FI), body weight gain (BWG), nutrient digestibility and carcass parameters. For this purpose, five iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous rations were formulated with different levels of PP (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%). Experimental diets were supplemented with a blend of exogenous enzymes (Xylanase, Mannanase, Protease, Cellulase). A total of four hundred male broiler chicks (day old) of 38 ± 3 gram were randomly distributed into 5 experimental groups in such a way that each group had 8 replicates and each replicate had 10 birds. Results revealed that the inclusion of PP @ 5% with exogenous enzymes had similar FI, BWG and nutrients digestibility with control. However, the inclusion of P @ of 10, 15, and 20% with exogenous enzymes in the broiler diet adversely affected the BWG, feed conversion ratio and nutrient digestibility ( p < 0.05). Results of carcass parameters were not affected ( p > 0.05) by dietary treatments. Based on findings, it is concluded that 5% addition of PP with exogenous enzymes could be practiced in broiler diet without any adverse effect on the performance of commercial broilers.

The increase in human population, particularly in the developing countries like Nigeria and the demand for animal protein intake has necessitated different approaches of solving protein shortage. A 28-day study was carried out to determine the performance of finishers fed on different hourly soaked doum palm (Hyphaene thebaica) pulp meal (DPPM) diets. Two hundred and sixteen (216) finishers (4 week-old) were randomly allotted to six dietary treatments. Each treatment consisted of 36 birds with three replicates (12 birds per replicate) in a completely randomized design (CRD). Six experimental diets were formulated and designed as follows: T1 (Control) contained 0% DPPM while T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 contained 12.5% each of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 hours soaked DPPM as substitute for maize, respectively. Feeds and water were provided ad libitum for all treatment groups. The average body weight gain (40.44- 42.71 g/b/d), average feed intake (87.52-96.73 g/b/d) and feed conversion ratio (2.14-2.34) were non-significant (p>0.05) regardless of the dietary treatments. Statistical differences (p<0.05) were observed in some carcass parameters such as thigh (13.40-14.98%), neck (5.32-6.55%), shank (3.81-5.2 %), wing (9.80-11.41%), head (2.43-3.74%) and two haematological indices; white blood cell (160.67-189.53 X 103/mm3) and eosinophils (0.33-2.00%) across the treatment groups. The processed DPPM could serve as a rich energy source in broiler feeds with the raw doum palm pulp containing 2987.45 kcal/kg. Also, soaking the pulp for 2 to 10 hours before been included in broiler diet improved the nutritional content, acceptability, palatability and utilization of the feed by the broilers. Thus, up to 12.5% processed DPPM can be included in the diets of broiler chickens without adverse effect on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass characteristics and haematological indices of chickens.

We investigated the effects of a blend of organic acids (OAs) and medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) supplementation in 800 1-d-old male Ross 308 broiler chickens (42 ± 0.90 g) in a 7-week study. Broiler chicks were randomly allocated into one of the five dietary treatments (16 birds per pen with 10 pens per treatment). Dietary treatments consisted of corn-soybean meal based basal diet and the basal diet supplemented with blend of OAs and MCFAs at 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 g, and 1 g per kg of feed. In the current study, during the whole experimental period, the inclusion of the blend of OAs and MCFAs in the basal diet linearly improved (p < 0.05) body weight gain (BWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and dry matter digestibility. The increasing inclusion of the blend of OA and MCFA levels in the diets linearly decreased (p = 0.002) feed intake during d 1 to 7. Broilers fed diets containing different levels of the blend of OAs and MCFAs showed a linear increase (p = 0.006) in Lactobacillus concentrations and decrease (p = 0.014) in ammonia (NH3) at the end of the experiment. However, the blend of OAs and MCFAs did not affect carcass quality, E. coli, and Salmonella counts, as well as hydrogen sulfide and total mercaptans gas emission (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the blend of OA and MCFA supplementation positively influenced growth performance, DM digestibility, excreta Lactobacillus counts, as well as NH3 gas emission in broiler chickens.

This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of conventional ingredients replacement with alternative ingredients on growth performance, carcass quality, nutrient digestibility and intestinal microbial of broilers. One hundred twenty Cobb500 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to four diets. Corn, soybean meal and fish meal were replaced with rice waste, meat and bone waste and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) at 0, 10, 30 and 50% to form four treatments. Body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and digestibility of crude protein and fat were improved in broilers fed the replacement diets. Feed intake was not affected by the treatments suggesting that the replacement diets were well accepted by the chicken. Escherichia coli was decreased in the cecum and Lactobacillus were increased in the intestines of broilers fed the replacement diets. The fiber and chitin contents in the replacement diets may alter intestinal bacterial fermentation leading to improved nutrient digestibility. However, abdominal fat percentage increased in broilers fed the replacement diets. In conclusion, conventional ingredients can be replaced with up to 50% rice waste, meat and bone waste and BSFL in the diets with promising effect on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal microbial populations. © 2021 Friends Science Publishers

The study included 300 unsexed broiler chicks (Hubbard) were used to evaluate (Roselle Flower) as a feed additives on the productive performance of broiler. The chicks were divided into five groups with three replicates (20 birds in each) and fed on five diets. Diet 1 (control group) dried Roselle flower powder were supplemented to the diet 2, 3, 4 and 5 as 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1% respectively. The result revealed that a significant (P<0.05) increase in body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption and improvement in feed conversion ratio. Although the differences between groups for edible parts percent were not significant (Heart, Liver and Gizzard). The hematological values PCV%, RBC, WBC and H/L ratio were increased significantly (P<0.05) and cholesterol values decreased significantly as compared with control group. It can conclude that Roselle as other herbal plants may be considered as a feed additive in broiler diet would improve the productive performance, hematological and biochemical values of broiler. Diet Roselle flower supplementation of (1g/kg) might be acceptable for achieving optimum broilers performance.

Background: Copper (Cu) is an essential trace mineral for growth, production and health of poultry. Due to its poor absorption from inorganic source which is common supplemental form, large amount of Cu is excreted in the excreta. This experiment was conducted to assess the bioavailability of Cu from organic and nano sources at lower level of supplementation to reduce the excretion level without compromising the growth performance of chicken. Methods: A total of 420-day-old Giriraja chicks were randomly assigned to 7 treatment groups having 4 replicates each (15 chicks per replicate). The basal diets of both chick (0-6 weeks) and grower phases (7-10 weeks) were supplemented with 20 and 30 ppm of Cu from inorganic source as control (T1), the groups T2, T3 and T4 supplemented with 100, 75 and 50% of control from organic Cu, T5, T6 and T7 treatment diets supplemented with 75, 50 and 25% of control from Cu nanoparticles, respectively. Result: The grower phase and cumulative body weight gain was significantly (p less than 0.05) higher in T2 compared to T1, T6 and T7 groups, while the feed intake in chick phase was lower in T2, T5 and T7 groups as compared to T1, T3, T4 and T6. The chick phase feed conversion ratio was significantly (p less than 0.05) better in T2 and T5 groups compared to T1, T3, T4, T6 and T7, whereas the cumulative FCR was better in T2 and T5 compared to T6 and T7 groups, while it was not affected during grower phase. The dry matter and crude protein metabolizability were significantly (p less than 0.05) higher in T2 and T5, the organic matter and ether extract metabolizability was higher only in T5. The crude fiber and nitrogen free extract was not affected by the treatment diets. Nitrogen excretion was significantly (p less than 0.05) lower and its retention was higher in T2 and T5 treatment groups but was comparable with control. The Cu excretion through excreta was significantly (p less than 0.05) higher and its retention was lower in control as compared to all dietary treatments. Hence, it was concluded that the Cu supplementation from organic or nanoparticles form can be reduced by 50 and 75% of standard, respectively without compromising the growth performance of birds and nutrient digestibility of diets.

The present study 180, day-old broiler chicks (Vencobb) were randomly distributed into 3 treatment groups with three replicates in each group. The chicks were placed in 9 pens with 20 chicks in each pen and reared in deep litter system under uniform management conditions. Control starter (0-3 wk) and finisher (4-6 wk) diets were formulated to meet the entire nutrients. Subsequently two test diets were prepared by incorporating acid treated fish silage at 5 and 10% level. Each diet was offered ad libium to 3 pens of 20 chicks each throughout the experimental period (0-6 wks). Dietary incorporation of acid treated fish silage up to 10% had no influence on body weight gain and feed consumption of broilers. The feed conversion ratio improved significantly by incorporation of fish silage at both 5 and 10%, during starter phase, but no influence was noticed subsequently. Fish silage up to 10% in the diet did not affect the dressed percentage and relative weight of other carcass parameters such as liver, heart, gizzard, breast and abdominal fat. The albumin to globulin ratio increased significantly (P>0.05) due to incorporation of fish silage at 10% in the diet compared to that of control. The serum triglyceride concentration increased significantly (P>0.05) at 10% level of inclusion of fish silage in diet. Lowest cholesterol concentration was found in the dietary group fed the control diet. The serum cholesterol concentration increased significantly (P>0.05) and linearly by increasing the level of fish silage from 5 to 10%. It is concluded that acid treated fish silage can be incorporated upto 10% in the diet without any adverse effect on performance of broiler chickens.

Day-old male chicks were used to test the effects of a combination of formic and propionic acids (CFP) added to wheat- and barley-based diets on the performance and gut histomorphology of broilers. The CFP, containing formic and propionic acids based on an inorganic phyllo-silicate carrier, was added to starter and grower broiler diets of standard (NRC, 1994) or lower nutrient density (LND) using different levels of wheat and barley. Body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broiler chicks were significantly (P < 0.001) improved by CFP supplementation at 21 days of age regardless of nutrient density (ND). However, at 35 days of age CFP addition significantly (P < 0.001) increased BWG and FCR. Proventriculus weight was also significantly affected by the dietary treatments. Ileal viscosity was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by ND which was associated with wheat and barley contents, whereas feed viscosity was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by CFP supplementation. Villus height was significantly (P < 0.05) increased by the CFP supplementation. In the case of villus width, an interaction effect was observed: there was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the group fed the standard ND diet, but only a numerical decrease in the group fed the LND diet compared to control group. No significant effect of dietary treatment on the thickness of the lamina muscularis mucosae could be detected.

The effectiveness of diatomaceous earth (DE) and bentonite clay (BC) in reducing the toxic effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in chicks was assessed. A total of 150 day-old male broiler chicks were assigned to six dietary treatments, with 5 replicate pens of five chicks per treatment. Dietary treatments were: (1) a positive control basal diet (BD) containing no AFB1, no BC and no DE; (2) BD + 0.50% BC but with no AFB1 and DE; (3) BD + 0.50% DE but with no AF and BC; (4) BD + 2 mg AFB1/kg diet but with no BC and DE; (5) BD + 0.50% BC + 2 mg AFB1/kg diet but with no DE; and (6) BD + 0.50% DE + 2 mg AFB1/kg diet but with no BC. Compared with controls, feed intake (FI) and body weight gain (BWG) were depressed (P<0.05) in chicks fed AFB1, with greater reduction in FI and BWG observed in birds fed the AFB1 plus 0.50% DE diet. Feed conversion ratio was similar. Chicks fed AFB1 alone had increased (P<0.05) relative liver weights compared to all other dietary treatments except for chicks fed AFB1+ DE. Chicks fed AFB1 alone and those fed AFB1+ DE had heavier (P<0.05) relative kidney weights compared to chicks fed other treatments. Compared with the control chicks, livers from birds fed dietary AFB1 and AFB1 plus DE were similar. Liver lesion score of chicks fed AFB1 plus BC was lower (P<0.05) than that of chicks fed AFB1 but higher (P<0.05) than that of control chicks. Compared to controls, serum concentrations of glucose, albumin, total protein globulin, and calcium were decreased (P<0.05) in chicks fed AFB1 alone, whereas serum concentrations of aspartate amino transferase and gamma glutamyl transferase were increased (P<0.05). It can be concluded that this concentration of BC was partially effective in reducing the toxic effects of 2 mg/kg AFB1, whereas DE at the same concentration was not effective in reducing the toxic effects of 2 mg/kg AFB1.

The present study was planned to evaluate the response of broiler chicks to diets containing graded levels of spearmint (Mentha spicata).  A total of 200 , five days-old, unsexes (cob) broiler chicks were used. Chicks were weighed individually and assigned randomly to five groups of 40 chicks per treatment and each treatment was subdivided to four replicates of 10 chicks each. Five experimental diets were formulated (A, B, C, D and E) to meet the nutrient requirements of broiler chicks. The experimental parameters examined were growth performance, serum metabolite, electrolyte and enzyme activities and economic appreciable. Diet (A) Negative      Control (NC), a basal diet without antibiotic or spearmint,  diet B as Positive Control (PC) basal diet supplemented with antibiotic (Neomycin 16 mg/Kg), diets C,D and E were basal diet  supplemented with spearmint at levels of 1,1.5,and 2%, respectively. Result obtained showed that addition of spearmint improved significantly (P<0.05) the performance (body weight gain and feed conversion ratio) of broiler chicks compared to group fed on NC while no significant (P<0.05) differences between chicks fed on diets supplemented with spearmint  and PC group observed, no significantly difference was found in feed consumption between all treated groups. The mortality rate did not influenced by the dietary treatments. Results revealed no significant differences (P<0.05) observed among all treatment groups in the carcass dressing percentages, Supplementation of broiler diets with spearmint at various levels was resulted in significant (p>0.05) reduction of abdominal fat, serum cholesterol, and AST enzyme activity compared to both NC and PC groups while the levels of urea, total protein, glucose and ALP and serum electrolytes levels remained unchanged. The highest profitability ratio (1.13) was obtained from the diet (E) supplemented with 2% spearmint. This study showed that spearmint when added as growth promoter in broiler diets has a similar effect on performance as that of antibiotic without any adverse effects.
