The Hancheng block in the southeastern Ordos Basin is one of the earliest and the most important areas for coalbed methane exploration and development in China. However, there are significant production variations in different wells or even some adjacent wells in the Hancheng block. To reveal the reasons of production differences in such a small scale, further detailed studies of coalbed methane productivity in the Hancheng pilot test area, a precursor trial area in Hancheng block with mature, well-characterized coalbed methane reservoirs and long-term production database, were conducted. The influence of nine factors (including engineering and geological factors) on gas production was analyzed. By introducing the rough set theory, which is applicable to the vague, imprecise, and incomplete information system, this paper presents a method for quantitative evaluation of the influencing factors on gas production. The results indicate that there are certain distribution characteristics of productivity in Hancheng pilot test area, which can be partitioned into four zones. The degressive order of the influencing degree of these nine factors is (i) the distance between the well and the fault, (ii) the structure curvature of the coal seams, (iii) the gas content, (iv) the critical reservoir ratio, (v) the volume of the fracturing liquids per meter, (vi) the volume of the fracturing sand per meter, (vii) the dynamic liquid level drop rate, (viii) the depth, and (ix) the thickness. Geological factors, especially the influence of fault, structural curvature of the coal seams and gas content, play a major role in controlling long-term gas production. Engineering factors (effect of fracturing and dynamic liquid level drop rate) have always been integral parts of coalbed methane development.

Coalbed methane (CBM) productivity is influenced by various factors. Based on field production data and test data of southern Qinshui Basin, factors including geological factors, engineering factors and drainage factors that affect CBM productivity are analyzed. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is introduced to calculate the contribution of each parameter to CBM productivity. A three-level model for evaluating CBM productivity based on AHP is established. The results show that average daily gas production of single well in southern Qinshui Basin increases with gas content, coal seam thickness, permeability, porosity, gas saturation, critical desorption pressure. Filling minerals in pores and fractures of coal can decrease gas content, porosity and permeability of coal reservoir. When burial depth is deeper than 500m or reservoir pressure is greater than 2MPa and burial depth is shallower than 1000m or reservoir pressure is less than 10MPa, CBM productivity is relatively high. According to the calculation, the weight of geological factors, engineering factors and drainage factors are 50%, 25% and 25%, respectively. Reservoir physical properties, geological conditions, fracturing technology and drainage process have the most impact, the weight of which are 33.33%, 16.67%, 11.79%, and 15.00%, respectively.

New technological development and a best knowledge of the basin allow to have justified expectation to find coalbed methane reserves. Measurements of gas content in unexploited coal seams are made in order to estimate the CBM could revive the economic interest of the Asturian Central Coal Basin (ACCB). According to first estimations based on the studies accomplished, the minimum resources of coalbed methane in the whole of the Asturian Central Coal Basin are in the order of 25,000 Mm3 and the gas content of the coal seams range from 6 m3 to 14 m3/t. The introduction should briefly place the study in a broad context and define the purpose of the work and its significance.

The Wuwei Basin is located in the Gansu Corridor, which has abundant coalbed methane resources of 2.75 × 1011 m3. However, a low degree of coalbed methane exploration exists, and only a few wells have been drilled in local regions due to insufficient understanding of coalbed methane enrichment and its main controlling factors. This study analyzed the controlling factors of coalbed methane enrichment, including coal reservoir characteristics, hydrogeological conditions, and the original sedimentary environment of the coal-bearing strata. The results showed that the main coal seams were developed in the Taiyuan Formation, and were mostly concentrated in the Yingpan Sag in the south and the Ermahu Sag in the north of the study area. The macrolithotype of the coals in this basin was mainly semi-bright coal with a medium to high rank. Coal macerals were mainly vitrinite, ranging between 65.1% and 91.6% (averaged 81.70%), followed by liptinite, ranging between 1.9% and 29.5% (averaged 8.82%), and inertinite, ranging between 0.2% and 16.5% (averaged 3.66%). Mineral contents varied from 2.5% to 15.1% (averaged 6.16%). The macrolithotype and microlithotype of the Taiyuan Formation coals were favorable for coalbed methane formation. Through comparative analysis of moisture content, ash yield, gas content, and coal-forming sedimentary environments, it was found that the coal formed in the lagoon environment had a higher gas content and lower ash yield than that of the coal formed in the tidal flat environment. The high contents of total dissolved solids in aquifers around coal seams (1.75–16.70 g/L) reflected the closed hydrodynamic environment and were favorable for the preservation of coalbed methane in the Yingpan Sag. Considering various controlling factors (i.e., structure, sedimentation and hydrogeology), three coalbed methane enrichment models were proposed. The model of coalbed methane enrichment in the synclinorium was the most favorable for the enrichment of coalbed methane in the Yingpan Sag.

Adsorption and desorption of coalbed methane are generally at a dynamic equilibrium state under the undisturbed coal reservoir. However, as the reservoir pressure drops to a certain value during the extraction of coalbed methane, the equilibrium state is destroyed and thus more coalbed methane desorbs and escapes from coal to wellbore. Here the corresponding bottom-hole fluid pressure is called initial gas production pressure (IGPP) in the development practice of coalbed methane wells. This paper, which has taken Changzhi-Anze block in the central-southern part of Qinshui basin as the study object, addresses the distribution characteristic and control factors of IGPP of coalbed methane wells and then explores the key factors affecting IGPP using grey correlation analysis theory. The results indicate that IGPP varies from 1.09 MPa to 6.57 MPa, showing a distribution law with high in the middle and low in the west and east of the study area, which presents a similar distribution characteristic with burial depth, thickness, coal rank, gas content, original reservoir pressure, and in-situ stress. Further, through grey correlation analysis, it concludes that the correlation degrees of control factors affecting IGPP of coalbed methane wells in the descending order are decline rate of working fluid level, water yield before gas production, reservoir pressure, coal thickness, coal rank, minimum horizontal principal stress, burial depth, and gas content. Among these factors, engineering factors, including decline rate of working fluid level and water yield before gas production, present a key controlling effect, because they can determine the smooth migration pathway directly during initial water production. And another key factor, original reservoir pressure also builds strong and positive correlation with IGPP under the interaction of other geology and reservoir factors, revealing the capability of gas desorption and the transmission of pressure drops.

Based on the structural interpretation of seismic data, we analyzed the gas controlling effects of folds and faults on CBM accumulation qualitatively. Meanwhile, we discussed the lateral sealing ability of the major overthrust faults quantificationally by bringing in “Shale Gouge Ratio (SGR)”, which is proved to be applicable in analyzing the gas controlling effects of faults. The results of the theoretical analysis show that overthrust faults have better sealing effects than normal faults, and synclines are more conducive to CBM accumulation than anticlines. The SGR computed results show a high consistency with the distribution characteristics of the CBM gas content. In all, the folds have little controlling on CBM accumulation, and the faults play a major role in the gas controlling on CBM accumulation in the Weibei CBM field.

The Baode block on the eastern margin of the Ordos Basin is a key area for the development of low-rank coalbed methane (CBM) in China. In order to find out the genesis of CBM and its storage and seepage space in Baode block, the isotopic testing of gas samples was carried out to reveal the origin of CH4 and CO2, as well, mercury intrusion porosimetry, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, and X-ray CT tests were performed to characterize the pores and fractures in No. 4 + 5 and No. 8 + 9 coal seams. The results showed that the average volume fraction of CH4, N2, and CO2 is 88.31%, 4.73%, and 6.36%, respectively. No. 4 + 5 and No. 8 + 9 coal seams both have biogenic gas and thermogenic methane. Meanwhile, No. 4 + 5 and No. 8 + 9 coal seams both contain CO2 generated by coal pyrolysis, which belongs to organic genetic gas, while shallow CO2 is greatly affected by the action of microorganisms and belongs to biogenic gas. The average proportion of micropores, transition pores, mesopores, and macropores is 56.61%, 28.22%, 5.10%, and 10.07%, respectively. Samples collected from No. 4 + 5 coal seams have developed more sorption pores. Meanwhile, samples collected from No. 8 + 9 coal seams exhibited a relatively low degree of hysteresis (Hg retention), suggesting good pore connectivity and relatively high seepage ability, which is conducive to gas migration. The connected porosity of coal samples varies greatly, mainly depending on the relative mineral content and the proportion of connected pores.

To enhance the coalbed methane (CBM) extraction in broken-soft coal seams, a method of drilling a horizontal well along the roof to hydraulically fracture the coal seam is studied (i.e., HWR-HFC method). We first tested the physical and mechanical properties of the broken-soft and low-permeability (BSLP) coal resourced from Zhaozhuang coalmine. Afterward, the in situ hydraulic fracturing test was conducted in the No. 3 coal seam of Zhaozhuang coalmine. The results show that (1) the top part of the coal seam is fractured coal, and the bottom is fragmented-mylonitic coal with a firmness coefficient value of less than 1.0. (2) In the hydraulic fracturing test of the layered rock-coal specimens in laboratory, the through-type vertical fractures are usually formed if the applied vertical stress is the maximum principal stress and is greater than 4 MPa compared with the maximum horizontal stress. However, horizontal fractures always developed when horizontal stress is the maximum or it is less than 4 MPa compared with vertical stress. (3) The in situ HWR-HFC hydraulic fracturing tests show that the detected maximum daily gas production is 11,000 m3, and the average gas production is about 7000 m3 per day. This implies that the CBM extraction using this method is increased by 50%~100% compared with traditional hydraulic fracturing in BSLP coal seams. The research result could give an indication of CBM developing in the broken-soft and low-permeability coal seams.

Drilling horizontal wells in low permeability coal seams is a key technology to increase the drainage area of a well, and hence, decrease costs. It’s unavoidable that some parts of the horizontal section will be drilled outside the targeted coal seam due to unforeseen subsurface conditions, such as sub-seismic faulting, seam rolls, basic geosteering tools, drilling practices and limited experiences. Therefore, understanding the impact of horizontal in-seam drilling performance on coal seam gas (CSG) production and remaining gas distribution is an important consideration in drilling and field development plans. This study presents a new workflow to investigate the impact of horizontal in-seam performance on CSG production and gas distribution for coal seams with different porosity, permeability, permeability anisotropy, initial gas content (GC), initial gas saturation and the ratio of in-coal length to in-seam length (RIIL). First, a box model with an area of 2 km × 0.3 km × 6 m was used for conceptual simulations. Reduction indexes of the cumulative gas production at the end of 10 years of simulations were compared. Then, a current Chevron well consisting of a vertical well and two lateral wells, was selected as a case study in which the impact of outside coal drilling on history matching and remaining gas distribution were analysed. Results show that the RIIL plays an increasing role for cases with decreasing permeability or initial gas saturation, while it plays a very similar role for cases with varied porosity, permeability anisotropy and GC. The size and location of outside coal drilling will affect the CSG production and remaining gas distribution.
