A Case of Nasal Cavity and Laryngeal Involvement of Rosai–Dorfman Disease

Rosai–Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare non-malignant disorder, characterized by painless multiple cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, and elevated inflammatory markers. Its diagnosis is difficult due to its rare incidence and various clinical presentations, especially in extranodal involvement. In this report, we demonstrate a patient with RDD who presented with a nasal septum and laryngeal tumor that caused dyspnea. We achieved a successful treatment outcome with combined surgical resection of the laryngeal mass and corticosteroid medication. The symptoms and tumors were resolved within 3 weeks after treatment. We reported our experiences with review of literatures.

✓ Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (Rosai—Dorfman disease) is a nonneoplastic lymphoproliferative disorder that usually presents with massive painless cervical lymphadenopathy accompanied by fever and weight loss. Extranodal involvement occurs in over 40% of patients; however, isolated extranodal disease without lymph node involvement is unusual. Extranodal involvement of the nervous system is unusual and isolated central nervous system disease in the absence of nodal disease is distinctly rare. The author describes the case of a 35-year-old man who presented with paraplegia and an enhancing intramedullary lesion on magnetic resonance imaging that was suggestive of a primary spinal cord tumor. The lesion was completely resected and histologically proved to be consistent with an isolated extranodal case of Rosai—Dorfman disease. Although a number of cases of this entity involving the CNS have been published, the author believes this case represents the first report of intramedullary spinal cord involvement as the initial and only sign of disease.

Rosai-Dorfman disease is a rare histiocytic proliferative disorder of unknown etiology typically characterized by cervical lymphadenopathy. Extranodal involvement often manifests in the head and neck region. We present a 10-year-old male who presented to our hospital with left epiphora from an aggressive paranasal mass invading the left orbit with osseous destruction. The mass was surgically biopsied and debulked with histopathological examination revealing Rosai-Dorfman disease. Although rarely found in the sinuses, Rosai-Dorfman disease should be considered when evaluating sinonasal masses.

Rosai–Dorman disease, also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, typically presents as massive enlargement of lymph nodes accompanied by systemic symptoms. Extranodal involvement is also known usually in head and neck regions. Rarely the disease presents at extranodal sites only without involvement of lymph nodes.We present a case of 58 years-old female who presented with mass in nasal septum without involvement of lymph nodes. The mass was removed surgically and diagnosis was made on histological grounds with classical indings of histiocytic proliferation and emperipolesis.

Rosai-Dorfman disease or sinus histiocytosis is a nonmalignant disease chiefly presenting as a painless cervical lymphadenopathy, although extranodal involvement is also frequent. Involvement of the tracheobronchial tree is extremely rare, and there are no clear guidelines on management. Rosai-Dorfman disease usually presents as a tracheal tumor, although it may also present with extraluminal compression. Only 12 cases have been reported in the English language literature. Histopathology is required to confirm the diagnosis. We describe what we think is India’s first reported case of histologically proven tracheal Rosai-Dorfman disease in a 40-year-old otherwise healthy lady.

AbstractTreatment interruption is one of the main risk factors of poor treatment outcome and occurrence of additional drug resistant tuberculosis. This study is a national retrospective cohort study with 10 years follow up period in MDR-TB patients in Ethiopia. We included 204 patients who had missed the treatment at least for one day over the course of the treatment (exposed group) and 203 patients who had never interrupted the treatment (unexposed group). We categorized treatment outcome into successful (cured or completed) and unsuccessful (lost to follow up, failed or died). We described treatment interruption by the length of time between interruptions, time to first interruption, total number of interruption episodes and percent of missed doses. We used Poisson regression model with robust standard error to determine the association between treatment interruption and outcome. 82% of the patients interrupted the treatment in the first six month of treatment period, and considerable proportion of patients demonstrated long intervals between two consecutive interruptions. Treatment interruption was significantly associated with unsuccessful treatment outcome (Adjusted Risk Ratio (ARR) = 1.9; 95% CI (1.4–2.6)). Early identification of patients at high risk of interruption is vital in improving successful treatment outcome.

Objectives: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is an uncommon, benign histiocytic disorder of unknown etiology, typically presenting in young adulthood. We highlight the cytomorphology of RDD and correlate it with the histopathology. Study Design: All cases diagnosed as RDD on fine-needle aspiration cytology between January 2001 and June 2015 were included. Clinical details were obtained from medical records. The cytology smears were reviewed along with the histopathology and immunohistochemistry, wherever available. Results: The study included 10 cases ranging in age from 11 to 68 years (median 29). There was a male predominance with a male:female ratio of 1.5:1. The patients commonly presented with bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. Extranodal involvement was seen in 2 cases in the nose and mandible, respectively. Of these 10 cases, 8 were later biopsied. The cytological features included numerous crescentic histiocytes, emperipolesis, reactive lymphocytes and plasma cells. A histological diagnosis of RDD was made in 7 out of 8 cases, and 1 was diagnosed as Hodgkin lymphoma. Conclusion: FNA represents an efficient, minimally invasive, cost-effective and reliable technique for the diagnosis of RDD and may obviate the need for further biopsy. However, the disease has close differential diagnoses, including Langerhans cell histiocytosis, granulomatous lesions, and Hodgkin lymphoma. Hence, it must be remembered that there can be pitfalls when the diagnosis is made by cytology alone.

Nanotechnology has brought revolutionary changes in the fields of medicine and dentistry. The application of nanoparticles in dentistry is termed as nanodentistry. Researchers worldwide experiment and employ suitable nanoparticles to overcome the existing drawbacks associated with various materials and techniques used in dentistry. Dentistry is finely segregated into various disciplines, yet still closely interwoven and interdependent to achieve a successful treatment outcome. This approach forms the backbone of interdisciplinary dentistry. From combating infections caused by microbes to improving anchorage of implants, nanotechnology and nanomaterials find multitude of use in interdisciplinary dentistry. This review article summaries the plethora of nanoparticles and their application in interdisciplinary dentistry.
