Aim To investigate the presence and impact of self-sacrifice within the nursing profession. Background Evidence suggests the existence of a culture of self-sacrifice within nursing, but its potential detriments to the profession have not been explored. Design A qualitative descriptive approach was used. Methods Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 practicing nurses to explore the existence and potential implications of a self-sacrificing culture within nursing. Results All participants reported self-sacrifice within the nursing profession as the result of the prevailing stereotypical image of the “ideal nurse,” leading to job dissatisfaction, presenteeism, and burnout. Younger nurses reported being less willing to self-sacrifice and consequently felt unsupported by management and senior staff, resulting in job dissatisfaction and intent to leave their job. Conclusion A culture of self-sacrifice within the nursing profession may lead to job dissatisfaction, presenteeism, burnout, and retention problems, especially for younger nurses. A self-sacrificing image of nursing may also deter potential recruits from exploring a career in the profession.

This study explores older people’s long-term care experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana. A qualitative descriptive approach employing semi-structured interviews was used to collect data from 15 older people from Southern Ghana. Analysis of interview data resulted in five interrelated themes: (1) sources and type of long-term care; (2) older people’s satisfaction with the long-term care received; (3) changes in their long-term care; (4) feelings of neglect regarding long-term care; and (5) older people’s resilience in long-term care. The sustainability of long-term care depends on the state’s ability to devise innovative long-term care policies and programmes to promote older people’s and their carers’ well-being.

As the era progresses, technological advances bring ease in accessing information from various media, one of which is social media. One of the most popular social media is Instagram. Instagram is a social media that allows their users to share information in the form of images, videos or writings. But social media is often used as a means to mock individuals with the action of body shaming. Body shaming is an act of commenting on all aspects of one's body. Body shaming action occurs due to the ideal body standardization. The ideal body standardization differs from one place and culture, more often experienced by women. However some people resist the actions of body shaming experienced. Some body shaming survivors have courage to resist such an act by direct or social media resistance. The purpose of this research is to find out the form of resistance by the survivors of body shaming through Instagram. The study uses phenomenological research methods with qualitative descriptive approach. Research data is derived from depth interviews on five interviewees, observations, document studies and literature studies. The conclusion is the form of resistance of the survivors of body shaming through social media Instagram divided into two, open resistance and closed resistance. Adapted to the characteristics of body shaming survivors.  The open resistance is characterized by an open interaction between the Group One and the other group. While hidden resistance is characterized by a closed interaction, indirect inter-group.

This study aims to determine student perceptions of the ideal mathematics learning during the covid-19 pandemic. This research is a qualitative descriptive study which was carried out using observation, questionnaire and interview techniques to 36 students of mathematics education class 2020 Gorontalo State University  who had participated in online learning for 2 semesters. The results showed that mathematics learning carried out during the covid-19 pandemic was still not ideal with a percentage of 91.6% due to the nature of difficult and abstract mathematics material and there were several repeated obstacles that occurred in the online learning process, namely: 1) teachers were less proficient in use of online platforms; 2) teaching is carried out using only sound (audio); 3) the internet network is less stable so that students cannot participate in online learning. The recommendations for the ideal mathematics learning are: 1) in the online learning process the teacher must be able to master (proficiently) use the online platform used; 2) teachers must be able to design innovative and fun learning by utilizing the features available on the platform or utilizing objects that are around students; 3) teachers can provide learning resources that can be accessed at any time so as to facilitate students in order not to miss the subject matter.

Women’s choice and control impact birthing experiences. This study used a qualitative, descriptive approach to explore how women develop their initial birth plan and how changes made to the plan affect overall birth experiences. Narrative, semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 women who had given birth in Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada, and data were analyzed using a phenomenological approach. Findings showed that women relied on many resources when planning a birth and that changes made to a woman’s initial birth plan affected her recollection of the birth experience. Conclusions are that women’s positive and negative recollections of their birth experiences are related more to feelings and exertion of choice and control than to specific details of the birth experience.

Al-Farabi's Islamic economic thinking can be seen in his works such as the Book of Ara 'Ahl al-Madinah al-Fadilah, Kitab al-Siyasat al-Madaniyah and the Tahsil al-Sa'adah Book. Al-Farabi was one of the economic thinkers who emphasized his economic thinking on the concept of man as homo Islamicus who had an advantage in the field of reason compared to other beings (al-hayawan al-nathiq) where one of his goals was to become a perfect society (al- kalimah) and happy by doing noble actions, virtues and virtues. However, in its journey, the existence of the community formed a state that was in the form of a main state (al-Madinah al-Fadilah), a foolish state (al-madinah al-Jahilah), a fasiq state (al-madinah al-Fasiqah), a perverse country (al -madinah al-Dhallah), and a changing state (al-madinah al-Mutabaddilah). Background. Many nurse educators understand that students need to embrace the challenges and rewards of working with older clients. Yet, they might wonder how they can help students to develop and what is the specialized knowledge necessary to care for older clients. Question. How do students perceive the nursing needs of older adults? Method. A qualitative descriptive study was undertaken. Data collection occurred through semistructured interviews (9 students) and one focus group (8 students) using a photoelicitation technique. The researchers used a descriptive approach to analyze the data. Findings. Six themes emerged from the data: ask the older client!; physiology rules; personal, not professional; who can validate?; hierarchy of needs; and help us learn. Conclusion. Participants relied upon previous patterns of learning, primarily experiential, and on the views of health care colleagues in clinical practice to make decisions about the health needs of older clients. Participants clearly recognized the need to and significance of understanding the health care requirements of older clients. Findings have implications for how the care of older clients is introduced into nursing education programs.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the construct of dignity of the patient–family dyad in hospice palliative care, as well as its influencing factors from the perspective of hospice palliative care staff.MethodsA qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 34 staff members from a residential hospice in Amherst, USA, and an inpatient palliative care unit in Winnipeg, Canada, between September 2013 and December 2016. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and were analysed using the thematic analysis approach.ResultsFindings suggested that staff members viewed dignity as something that is reciprocally supported within the patient–family unit. Themes including respect, comfort, privacy, being informed and quality family time were common in the conceptualisation of dignity in patients and families; themes of being human and being self, autonomy and living with dignity were uniquely used to conceptualise patient dignity. Themes solely constituting family dignity included being included in care, being capable and being treated fairly. Cultural considerations, environmental factors, teamwork and patient/family–staff relationship were the factors identified by staff members that affected dignity in hospice palliative care.ConclusionFindings of this study provide insights into the development of strategies to support the dignity of the patient–family unit in hospice palliative care.

Biofeedback is among the various self-regulation techniques that mental performance consultants can utilize in their practice with athletes. Biofeedback produces psychophysiological assessments in real time to enhance awareness of thoughts and emotions. Quantitatively, research shows that biofeedback can facilitate self-regulation, allowing an athlete to gain control over psychophysiological responses that could be detrimental to performance. With technology becoming a widespread tool in monitoring psychophysiological states, an exploration of consultants’ use of biofeedback, their perceptions of effectiveness, and limitations of their use was warranted to qualitatively evaluate efficiency of the tool. A qualitative descriptive approach was taken through semistructured interviews with 10 mental performance consultants. Inductive reasoning uncovered three themes: positive implications, practical limitations, and equipment options. With biofeedback, athletes have the ability to develop a deeper level of self-awareness and thereby facilitate the use of self-regulation strategies intended for optimal performance states and outcomes.

Abstract A growing body of literature supports the use of mindfulness-based practices to increase resilience and reduce emotional and behavioral problems of low-income youth of color who are exposed to chronic trauma. The current study, the first of its kind, addresses existing gaps in the literature by examining the social and emotional effects of mindfulness on instructors of color, a largely understudied population. All trainees (n = 25) in a year-long, mindfulness-based workforce development program in Baltimore were invited to participate in this qualitative descriptive study that involved semistructured interviews regarding the personal emotional impact of participating in the program, as well as possible changes in the subjects’ perceptions of yoga and the potential role of yoga in their communities. We applied a transcript-based analysis approach to the data from the individual interviews and derived themes using the constant comparative method. Twenty-one trainees (84%) participated in semistructured interviews. Participants were between the ages of 18 and 29 and were predominantly male (71.4%) and African-American (85.7%). We identified four key themes related to participating in the program: (1) changes in emotional functioning and self-perception, (2) changes in interactions with others, (3) changes in perception of yoga and mindfulness, and (4) perceived real-world application of yoga and mindfulness. The current study adds to the literature by exploring the public health implications of mindfulness, particularly in addressing effects of chronic trauma in low-income communities of color. The workforce development program also merits further evaluation as a potential model for enabling local and national nonprofit organizations to offer low-income youth and youth of color employment options that enhance resources in trauma-affected communities.
