A gamified mobile application for first-year student orientation to promote library services

This study proposes a mobile application as a new approach for first-year student orientation to promote knowledge of library services using the gamification concept. The application is based on mobile devices with GPS to locate students, allowing them to catch, collect, and battle monsters around the library with questions on library service instructions. To evaluate the learning effectiveness of the approach, we performed a comparative experiment in which the control group used e-learning, while the experimental group used the mobile application of the CMU Journey. We evaluated the pre-and post-test scores, delayed 1-month post-test scores, and intrinsic motivation based on the IMI questionnaire. The results demonstrated that the preference for gamified experience among students can enhance knowledge retention and intrinsic motivation compared to other groups.

Preclinical Task based learning (TskBL) is a simulated learning approach in which focus for students is a real task done by a medical professional. TskBL includes standardized patient encounters and is helpful to provide Early Clinical Exposure. Our study aimed at planning, implementing and assessing TskBL among first year Medical students and comparing it to conventional method of tutorials in Physiology MBBS curriculum.This is a non-equivalent group quasi experimental study approved by Institutional ethics committee. TskBL was conducted for five topics among first year medical students of Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore for three academic years. Participants  were divided into a TskBL group and a control group. Both groups attended the theory classes in Physiology, practical sessions and clinical examinations concerning the tasks. Following this, TskBL group underwent TskBL and control group underwent tutorials. Pre and post-test assessments were conducted using the MCQ test and Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE).The mean TskBL scores for MCQ (exception:Hypertension) and OSCE (exception Anemia) were significantly higher than the tutorial group. Pre test and post test scores revealed significantly higher MCQ and OSCE scores for TskBL. Tutorial group did not show a significant improvement in test scores for all the tasks.TskBL strategy could be used for many other topics are likely to be encountered by the students during clinical attachments. Small group teaching can include TskBL over tutorials to provide early clinical exposure in medical schools.

This thesis is focused on the investigation of the effect of applying animal cartoon pictures on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. This study aims to find whether applying animal cartoon pictures significantly affect the students’ writing achievement or not. The data in this study were obtained by administering a written test. The population was the 2015/2016 first year (grade XI) of SMA Swasta Nusantara Lubuk Pakam and 66 students were taken as the sample by using random sampling. The sample was divided into two groups, experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught by applying animal cartoon pictures while the control group without animal cartoon pictures (x = lecturing). The data were taken the scores from the pre-test and post-test to both experimental and control groups. These data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of computing the t-test obviously showed that t-observed is higher than t-table (5.21 >1,67) with the degree of freedom 64 (df =N-2) at the level significance 0,05 one tail test. It showed that the application of animal cartoon pictures significantly affected the students of SMA Swasta Nusantara Lubuk Pakam achievement in writing narrative text.

Objective: The authors assessed whether anesthesia residents who acted as a scenario creators would have better knowledge retention than their juniors 90 days after participating in a simulation-based anesthetists’ non-technical skills (ANTS) workshop. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study via simulation ANTS workshop was conducted at a university hospital in southern Thailand in November 2017. Seven third-year post-graduate (PGY-3) residents volunteered as scenario creators, while the remaining anesthesia residents were randomly selected to participate in or observe three case scenarios, which were cardiac arrest, hypotension, and difficult ventilation. Resident’s knowledge was assessed before, immediately after, and 90 days after the workshop using a 20-item multiple-choice questionnaire. Predictors of change in knowledge scores were analyzed using multivariate linear regression analysis and presented as beta coefficient (β) and 95% confidence limits (CL). Results: Twenty-four anesthesia residents were recruited in the present study and included eight PGY-1, seven PGY-2, and nine PGY-3. The roles consisted of seven scenario creators, seven participants, and 10 observers. The overall immediate post-test and 90-day post-test scores increased significantly compared to the pre-test scores with a mean of 15.5 and 13.2 versus 11.7 (p<0.001 and p=0.007, respectively). The predictors of change in 90-day scores were PGY-3 versus PGY-1 (β 95% CL 4.0 [0.5 to 7.6], p=0.039), and role of participants and observers versus scenario creator (β 95% CL 5.5 [2.2 to 8.8] and 6.7 [2.8 to 10.6], p=0.004, respectively). Conclusion: Anesthesia residents who were participants or observers could improve their knowledge 90 days after a simulation-based ANTS workshop without necessarily being a scenario creator. This research aims to find out Is there any significant differences between the impact of traditional teaching method and using Index Card Match in teaching English vocabulary at the First Year Students of SMA HANG TUAH 3 MATARAM and to find out does using Index Card Match have a positive effect on students’ vocabulary knowledge. The sample of this research is 40 students. The kind of this research is experimental research. The students are divided into two groups such as experimental group and control group. Then the research subjects are pre-tested to know their prior vocabulary mastery. After the treatment, the sample is post-tested to know their recent vocabulary mastery as the result of the treatment. The scores in both pre-test and post-test are taken as the main data of the research. The data is analyzed by using t-test.

Kajian lalu menunjukkan kebolehan mengarang karangan dalam kalangan murid sekolah rendah adalah rendah. Oleh hal yang demikian, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengkaji kesan penggunaan peta pemikiran terhadap tahap penulisan karangan Bahasa Melayu dalam kalangan murid tahun lima. Penyelidik menggunakan kaedah eksperimen kuasi melibatkan satu sampel kajian yang terdiri daripada 64 murid sekolah rendah yang dibahagikan sama rata kepada satu kumpulan perlakuan dan satu kumpulan kawalan. Para murid dalam kumpulan pertama menggunakan peta pemikiran dalam pengajaran karangan, sementara kumpulan kedua menggunakan kaedah tradisional. Ujian pra dan ujian pasca digunakan untuk mendapatkan data yang dianalisis dengan Statistical Package For Social Science (SPSS) versi 21. Bagi kumpulan perlakuan, analisis data menunjukkan skor pasca ujian min murid adalah lebih tinggi dari skor pra ujian min mereka, sekali gus menunjukkan mereka memperoleh peningkatan dalam penulisan karangan dari segi kandungan dan pengolahan idea. Dapatan yang sama juga menunjukkan skor pasca ujian min murid dalam kumpulan perlakuan adalah lebih tinggi dari min skor yang sama bagi mereka dalam kumpulan kawalan, sekali gus menunjukkan kumpulan perlakuan adalah lebih berprestasi daripada kumpulan kawalan. Dapatan kajian ini mempunyai implikasi dalam amalan pengajaran semasa. Guru mata pelajaran Bahasa Melayu boleh menggunakan peta pemikiran sebagai satu alat pengajaran bagi membantu murid sekolah rendah belajar menulis karangan dengan lebih berkesan.   Studies have shown that students’ essay writing abilities of primary school students are low. As such, this study was carried out to examine the extent of the effects of using thinking maps on the teaching of Malay language essay writing among Year Five students. In this study, the researchers used a quasi-experimental method involving a study sample consisting of 64 primary school students were divided equally into a treatment group and a control group. The former used thinking maps in essay writing learning, while the latter used a traditional method. A pre-test and a post-test were used to obtain the data, which were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21. For the treatment group, the analysis of data showed students’ mean post-test scores were significantly higher than their mean pre-test scores, indicating they made significant improvements in essay writing in terms of content and ideation. The same analysis also showed students’ mean post-test scores in the treatment group were significantly higher than those of the control group, indicating the former outperformed the latter. These findings have a practical implication for the current teaching practice. Malay language teachers can use thinking maps as a teaching tool to help primary school students effectively learn to write essays.

This paper attempts to explore whether there is significant difference of achievement in vocabulary between students taught by using pictures and those are not. The subject of this study is the first year students of SLTP Muhammadiyah Simo Susukan, Semarang where the sample contains 50 students that is divided into experimental group (with treatment) and control group (without treatment). The data is gathered from participants’ score obtained from pre test and post test. Using t test as technique of data analysis, result shows that students taught by using pictures perform better than those are not. This study aimed to determine the effects of using manipulatives in teaching fractions.   Quasi- experimental method of research was used in this study. It was conducted during the first quarter of S.Y. 2019-2020 among the respondents were randomly selected. Two sections of Arayat National High School were the respondents of the study. The control group was the 7-Rosal while the 7-Sampaguita was the experimental group. Both groups were given a pretest prior to the discussion about fractions and a posttest after instruction using the traditional method (control group) and the use of manipulatives (experimental group). The results were then evaluated, analysed through SPSS, and interpreted. Mean, t-test and ANCOVA were utilized to analyze and interpret the data. This study found out that the post-test scores of the respondents from the two groups improved in comparison to their pre-test scores.  The mean pretest and mean posttest scores of both groups showed significant difference. The results showed that the use of virtual manipulatives in converting fractions to decimals had significant difference compared the use of the traditional method. On the contrary, teaching fractions on a number line did not have significant difference. Out of the four operations on fractions, three showed that the use of concrete manipulatives was highly effective. This study recommends that teachers must test the prior knowledge of their students before discussing about fractions to determine the students’ strengths and weaknesses. Although both traditional method and the manipulative approach showed improvement on the post-test results in teaching fractions, still, teachers are encouraged to use manipulatives in teaching fractions to improve students’ performance. It is important for teachers to provide their students opportunities for hands-on manipulation of objects in order to grasp the concepts of fractions more easily. Lastly, teachers must develop the use of concrete and virtual manipulatives in teaching fractions to promote active learning that can enhance students’ mathematics performance and can help them to realize that mathematics is an enjoyable subject.

After more than ten years of democracy in South Africa, many of the previously disadvantaged segments of the community, especially Blacks, would have hoped that a new economic order would have been created. Instead, South Africa still has very high unemployment and even young Black South Africans with a degree are not guaranteed a job. The purpose of this research was to ascertain whether a traditional first-year university business management course with an entrepreneurial component can contribute to the entrepreneurial orientation of students. The major features of entrepreneurs and innovators are knowledge, skills and attitudes. While the imparting of knowledge and the development of skills development receive, respectively, thorough and sketchy attention in formal education, attitude is hardly addressed. The need for achievement, innovation, locus of control and self-esteem are the variables of attitude that have been most commonly used in research on business motivation and the entrepreneur. To determine the success of an enterprise education course, therefore, the change in attitude of the students can be used as a measure. The instrument that was used to gauge the entrepreneurial attitude orientation of the students was an adaptation of an Entrepreneurial Attitude Orientation (EAO) scale. The authors tested 463 students using a pre-test and post-test approach, incorporating an experimental group and a control group. The results of this study do not augur well for the improvement of the entrepreneurial orientation of students.

The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of a context-based approach (CBA) ‘Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating, Transferring’ (REACT) strategy used in relation to the topic of solubility equilibrium in the laboratory chemistry course on students’ achievement at associate level in a health-related program. In this regard, two contexts related to the topic of solubility equilibrium were developed and applied. The study had pre-test post-test with a control group research design and the participants consisted of sophomore students studying in the Medical Laboratory Techniques (MLT) and the Pharmacy Services (PS) Programs of the Ahmet Erdogan Vocational School of Health Services at Bulent Ecevit University (N= 96). The students enrolled in the MLT program were randomly assigned as the experimental group (n= 47) and the students in the PS program were randomly assigned as the control group (n= 49). The experimental group was taught solubility equilibrium by a CBA REACT strategy, whereas the control group was taught the relevant topic by conventional teaching. The ‘Equilibrium of Solubility Achievement Test (ESAT)’ and ‘Structured Interview Form’ were used as data collection tools in the research. The results of content analysis of ESAT post-test showed that the frequency of answers in the sound understanding category was higher for the experimental group compared to the control group students. In addition, the results of Mann–WhitneyUand Wilcoxon tests of the ESAT indicated that post-test scores were higher in both groups compared to pre-test scores and the increase was higher in the experimental group compared to the control group. The content analysis results of structured interview form and semi-structured interviews showed that the students expressed positive views concerning the instruction and the qualities of the contexts in general. In this research, it was concluded that the CBA REACT strategy used in relation to the topic of solubility equilibrium in the laboratory chemistry course improved students’ sound understanding and achievement and helped them develop positive views regarding the instruction and the quality of the contexts.

In this study, it was investigated that effect of games including physical activity on digital game addiction of 11-14 age group middle-school students. Along with the determination of digital game addiction, conducting applied experimental study is important regarding showing results of application with theoretical knowledge towards solving problem. Within this framework, it was thought that “games including physical activity” will be important tool for decreasing the level of digital game addiction. Experimental Design method was used in the study in which was adopted Quantitative Research model. When 11-14 age group students who addicted digital games consisted of the population of the study, the sample of the study consisted of 29 girls and 51 boys who have studied. In the study, personal information form and digital game addiction scale that was developed by the researcher were used as measurement tools. During data collection period, by accepting applied pre-test to students as criterion sample process, students who have high addiction level (total scale score is 49 and above) were detected and control (n = 40) and experimental (n = 40) groups were created with unbiased assignment method. After the 12-weeks period “games including physical activity” training, the data which was collected from the control and experimental groups by taking post-test data was evaluated with SPSS 20 packaged software. It was found that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test of both sub-dimensions and total addiction scores and post-test scores were lower than pre-test scores. It was shown that post-test addiction scores were significantly higher than pre-test addiction scores in control group. When investigating post-test addiction scores of control and experiment groups, it was shown that addiction level of experimental group significantly decrease comparing control group. It was determined that pre-test/post-test scores of experimental group students did not show significant differences in terms of gender, age, education level of mothers, education level of fathers, number of siblings. It was also found that pre-test/post-test addiction scores of experimental and control groups showed significant differences regarding playing digital game duration. When playing digital game duration decreased in experimental group, playing game duration increased in control group. Therefore, it was concluded that addiction levels of students who are digital game addict decreased because of interesting games including physical activity. As a result; physical moving games and sports can be said to be an important tool in dealing with digital game addiction. It can also be said that an important way to protect children from such addictions is to do sports.
