Background This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of prealbumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (PFR) and albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR) alone or in combination in Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric cancer (Hp-NGC) patients. Methods This study included 171 healthy controls, 180 Hp-NGC patients, and 215 Helicobacter pylori-negative chronic gastritis (HpN) patients. We compared the differences of various indicators and pathological characteristics between groups with Mann–Whitney U test and Chi-square test. The diagnostic value of PFR and AFR alone or in combination for Hp-NGC patients was assessed by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results PFR and AFR were related to the progression and clinicopathological characteristics of Hp-NGC. As the disease progressed, PFR and AFR values gradually decreased and were negatively related to the tumor size and depth of invasion. In addition, the area under the curves (AUCs) that resulted from combining PFR and AFR to distinguish Hp-NGC patients from healthy controls and HpN patients were 0.908 and 0.654, respectively. When combined with PFR and AFR in the differential diagnosis of tumors with a maximum diameter ≥ 5 cm and the T3 + T4 stage, the AUCs were 0.949 and 0.922; the sensitivity was 86.32% and 80.74%; and the specificity was 94.74% and 92.98%, respectively. Conclusions PFR and AFR may be used as diagnostic biomarkers for Hp-NGC. The combination of PFR and AFR was more valuable than each indicator alone in the diagnosis of Hp-NGC.

Abstract Background CKLF Like MARVEL Transmembrane Domain Containing 6 (CMTM6) is involved in the epigenetic regulation of genes and tumorigenesis. Programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is closely related to the prognosis of some human cancers. CMTM6 is a key regulator of PD-L1 in many cancers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expressions of these proteins in gastric cancer and the correlations with clinicopathological features and survival. Methods The expression levels of CMTM6 and PD-L1 were examined in 185 gastric cancer specimens by immunohistochemistry. Chi-square test was used to analyze the relationship between CMTM6 and PD-L1 expressions and clinicopathological characteristics. Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used to analyze the survival data of patients.Results The positive expression rates of CMTM6 and PD-L1 were 78.38% (145/185) and 75.68% (140/185), respectively. High expression of CMTM6 and PD-L1 was correlated with Borrmann type ( P < 0.001), N stage ( P = 0.002), peritoneal metastasis ( P = 0.007) and TNM stage ( P = 0.038). The expression of CMTM6 and PD-L1 in gastric cancer tissues was positively correlated (Pearson's coefficient test, r = 0.260; P < 0.001). High expression of CMTM6 was correlated with poor prognosis (HR = 1.668; 95% CI = 1.032–2.695; P = 0.037). High expression of both CMTM6 and PD-L1 could be used as an independent factor for overall survival (HR = 1.554; 95% CI = 1.011–2.389; P = 0.044). Conclusions The combined detection of CMTM6 and PD-L1 may be used as an indicator for judging the prognosis of gastric cancer.

Abstract Background: LIM and SH3 protein 1 (LASP-1) has been demonstrated to be overexpression in several types of cancers. The aim of this study was to verify the serum level of LASP-1 and investigate its diagnostic value in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) patients.Methods: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to detect the expression level of LASP-1 in CCA patients and healthy controls. The correlation of LASP-1 expression with clinicopathological characteristic of CCA patients was analyzed via Chi-square test. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was built to evaluate the diagnostic value of serum LASP-1 in CCA.Results: Serum levels of LASP-1 were upregulated in CCA compared with healthy controls (P<0.01). And the serum level and tissue level of LASP-1 mRNA exhibited significant correlation (R=0.454, P=0.000). Serum expression of LASP-1 was closely associated with lymph node metastasis (P=0.018) and TNM stage (P=0.021). ROC curve analysis revealed that serum LASP-1 was of great value in differentiating CCA patients from healthy individuals. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) value was 0.879 corresponding with a sensitivity of 81.9% and a specificity of 79.6%.Conclusions: Serum LASP-1 might be an useful diagnostic biomarker for CCA.

Abstract Background: Gastric cancer (GC) represents one of the most serious cancers worldwide with the increasing mortality. Metastasis associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1), a kind of lncRNAs, has been reported to be involved in the progression of cancers. This study aimed to assess serum expression pattern of MALAT1 and its clinical significance in diagnosis of GC.Methods: Serum specimens were collected from 120 GC patients and 58 healthy individuals. The expression profile of MALAT1 was examined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and its association with clinical parameters was estimated by chi-square test. The diagnostic value of MALAT1 in GC was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.Results: Upregulated expression of MALTA1 was found in GC patients compared with the healthy controls (P<0.05). The overexpression of MALAT1 was positively correlated with lymph node metastasis (P=0.041) and TNM stage (P=0.005). An area under the curve (AUC) was 0.897 in ROC analysis, suggesting the high diagnostic value of MALAT1. Conclusion: The expression of MALAT1 was upregulated in GC serum samples, and its expression might serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker in patients with GC.

Abstract Background: The study was aimed to examine the diagnostic value of serum human telomerase reverse transcriptiptase (hTERT) in patients with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA).Methods: Serum hTERT in CCA patients and healthy controls was detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and compared by student’s t-test. Relationships of serum hTERT and clinical parameters were explained by Chi-square test. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was conducted to identify the diagnostic value of serum hTERT in CCA.Results: Serum hTERT was up-regulated in CCA patients compared with healthy controls (P<0.05). Furthermore, serum hTERT was closely related with differentiation (P=0.005), distant metastasis (P=0.015) and TNM stage (P=0.009). The AUC value of ROC curve was 0.901, demonstrating that serum hTERT could discriminate between CCA and healthy individuals, with the cutoff point of 1.88. Besides, the diagnostic specificity and sensitivity of serum hTERT in CCA were 89.7% and 76.0%, respectively.Conclusions: hTERT may be a promising biomarker for diagnosis of CCA.

Summary Aim: With the recent advances in multidetector-row CT, a fusion of functional PET with three dimensional (3D) CT gastrography may provide enhanced diagnostic capability and help surgeons during preoperative planning. The diagnostic value of hybrid PET/CT gastrography was compared with that of conventional PET/CT alone in gastric cancer staging. Patients, methods: Patients with gastric cancer (n = 101) confirmed by endoscopic biopsy specimens underwent conventional PET/CT and regional PET with contrast enhanced CT, followed by gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy at our institution from November 2007 to November 2008. These images were fused into a hybrid PET/CT gastrography using the cardiac IQ fusion software. Conventional PET/CT and hybrid PET/ CT gastrography were evaluated for staging of gastric cancer. After gastrectomy, these were compared with pathologic reports respectively. Results: Gastric cancer was diagnosed as 50 early gastric cancer (EGC) and 51 advanced gastric cancer (AGC) on pathologic examination. In EGC, hybrid PET/CT gastrography and PET/CT identified 36 (72%) and 7 (14%) tumours, respectively. Hybrid PET/CT gastrography correctly delineated the subtype of 25 EGC. In AGC, all 51 (100%) tumours were identified on the hybrid PET/CT gastrography compared to 39 (76.5%) tumours on PET/CT. Hybrid PET/CT gastrography correctly classified the morphology of 42 AGC using the Bormann classification. Additionally, depth of invasion was correctly presented in 38 of 51 AGC. Hybrid PET/CT gastrography for regional lymph node (LN) metastasis in the EGC and AGC showed the sensitivity of 75% and 83.9%, and specificity 90.5% and 55%, respectively. Conclusion: Hybrid PET/CT gastrography is the more intuitive and comprehensive method for the preoperative evaluation of gastric cancer than conventional PET/CT.

RESUMOObjetivo: Avaliar o perfil dos pacientes com neoplasia maligna de estômago, que receberam atendimento e tratamento no Hospital Municipal Dr. Jose de Carvalho Florence (HMJCF). Métodos: Estudo retrospectivo a partir do levantamento de prontuários. Análises foram feitas com uma amostragem e proporções esperadas desiguais e Quadros de contingência. Para se verificar associação entre as variáveis, utilizado o teste Qui–Quadrado de Pearson, considerando-se p ≤ 0,05, em um grau de confiabilidade de 95%. Resultados: O sexo masculino é o com maior número de casos na proporção de 2:1. A idade média ao diagnóstico é 65,16 anos. A queixa mais comum apresentada por estes pacientes foi a epigastralgia seguido pela inapetência. A maioria dos tumores encontrava-se no antro gástrico. Cinquenta e nove destes pacientes foram submetidos a cirurgia sendo 45 com intuito curativo. A sobrevida média foi de 15 meses e a taxa de sobrevida em 5 anos de apenas 6%.  Conclusão: O CG é uma doença muito agressiva e de prognóstico ruim. Methods: Retrospective study based on a survey of medical records. Analysis were made with a sampling and unequal expected ratios and contingency tables. To assess the association between variables, will be used the chi-square test, considering p ≤ 0.05, at a reliability level of 95%. Results: The largest number of cases are male, ratio of 2:1. The average age at diagnosis is 65.16 years. Caucasians followed by mulatto were the most frequent with Gastric Cancer. The most common complaint presented by these patients was abdominal pain followed by loss of appetite. Most tumors found in the gastric antrum. Fifty-nine of these patients underwent surgery with curative intent in 45. Twenty of them had some type of metastasis intraoperatively and 12 outpatients progressed to metastatic lesions. The median survival was 15 months and the survivor rate in 5 years was only 6%. Conclusion: The Gastric Cancer is a very aggressive and poor prognosis disease. Its initial symptoms are nonspecific, making diagnosis difficult in the early stages.Keywords: Gastric Cancer, Gastric Ulcer, Health Profile.

Background: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease primarily affecting the peripheral nervous system and skin. Multibacillary leprosy is associated with nerve damage which could contribute to myelin alteration. As ceramide is a constituent of myelin sheath, the present study aimed to compare anti-ceramide antibody titre in paucibacillary and multibacillary leprosy patients with controls. Methodology: Serum levels of anti-ceramide antibody were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) in 50 leprosy patients (25 paucibacillary and 25 multibacillary) and 25 healthy controls. Results were reported in OD units as mean ± SD and analyzed by Chi square test (significance at p < 0.05). Results: Patients suffering from multibacillary leprosy had significantly higher anti-ceramide antibody serum levels compared to paucibacillary leprosy patients and healthy controls (p < 0.005). Conclusions: Since nerve damage is the most debilitating effect of leprosy, the search for a serum marker for assessing nerve damage is required in countries where leprosy is still widespread. In multibacillary leprosy patients, the role of anti-ceramide antibody as a marker for nerve damage should be explored.

Background: Cervical cancer in young women is rare and disparity exists in its characteristics in the available reports. The study aimed to determine the disease burden and to compare its clinicopathological characteristics with older women. Materials and methods: Retrospective study was performed by retrieving data from the cancer registry for consecutive 843 cervical cancer patients treated in the center between 2017 and 2020. Patients were divided into younger (<40 years) and older (≥ 40 years) age. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 23 for windows. Chi square test was used for analyzing the categorical variables and P < 0.05 was considered signicant. Results: Cervical cancer in young women constituted 9.4%, with majority (96.2%) belonged to 30-39 years age. Higher prevalence of human immunodeciency virus (HIV) was found among younger compared to older women (P = 0.000). Younger women commonly presented late compared to older women (patients presented after 4 months are 49.4% vs. 18.8% respectively, P=0.000). Squamous cell carcinoma was commonest histology in both the groups and no difference in histology pattern between the two groups. Younger women had higher rate of bulky tumor (>4cm) compared to older (62.2% vs. 44.4%, P = 0.023). Conclusion: Delayed and advanced stage of presentation of cervical cancer in younger women in this region of India warrants promotion of health education, knowledge translation, regular cervical cancer screening for its prevention and early detection

Background. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is the first imaging modality for investigating the depth of invasion in early gastric cancer (EGC). However, there is presently no consensus on the accuracy of EUS in diagnosing the invasion depth of EGC. Aim. This study is aimed at systematically evaluating the accuracy of EUS in diagnosing the invasion depth of EGC and its affecting factors. Methods. The literatures were identified by searching PubMed, SpringerLink, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Nature, and Karger knowledge databases. Two researchers extracted the data from the literature and reconstructed these in 2×2 tables. The Meta-DiSc software was used to evaluate the overall sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic advantage ratio, and 95% confidence interval (CI). The SROC was drawn, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated to evaluate the diagnostic value. Results. A total of 17 articles were selected, which included 4525 cases of lesions. The sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, diagnostic dominance ratio, and 95% CI of EUS for diagnosing EGC was 0.87 (95% CI: 0.86-0.88), 0.67 (95% CI: 0.65-0.70), 2.90 (95% CI: 2.25-3.75), 0.17 (95% CI: 0.13-0.23), and 18.25 (95% CI: 12.61-26.39), respectively. The overall overstaging rate of mucosa/submucosa 1 (M/SM1) and SM by EUS was 13.31% and 32.8%, respectively, while the overall understaging rate of SM was 29.7%. The total misdiagnosis rates for EUS were as follows: 30.4% for lesions≥2 cm and 20.9% for lesions<2 cm, 27.7% for ulcerative lesions and 21.4% for nonulcerative lesions, and 22% for differentiated lesions and 26.9% for undifferentiated lesions. Conclusion. EUS has a moderate diagnostic value for the depth of invasion of EGC. The shape, size, and differentiation of lesions might be the main factors that affect the accuracy of EUS in diagnosing EGC.
