A physics-based, low-order ignition model is used to assess the ignition performance of a kerosene-fueled gas-turbine combustor under high-altitude relight conditions. The ignition model used in this study is based on the motion of virtual flame particles and their extinction according to a Karlovitz number criterion, and a stochastic procedure is used to account for the effects of spray polydispersity on the flame’s extinction behavior. The effects of large droplets arising from poor fuel atomization at sub-idle conditions are then investigated in the context of the model parameters and the combustor’s ignition behavior. For that, a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulation of the cold flow in the combustor was performed and used as an input for the ignition model. Ignition was possible with a Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of 50 μm, and was enhanced by increasing the spark volume. Although doubling the spark volume at larger SMDs (75 and 100 μm) resulted in the suppression of short-mode failure events, ignition was not achieved due to a reduction of the effective flammable volume in the combustor. Overall, a lower ignition probability is obtained when using the stochastic procedure for the spray, which is to be expected due to the additional detrimental effects associated with poor spray atomisation and high polydispersity.

The thermoacoustic modes of a full scale industrial gas turbine combustor have been predicted numerically. The predictive approach combines low order network modelling of the acoustic waves in a simplified geometry, with a weakly nonlinear flame describing function, obtained from incompressible large eddy simulations of the flame region under upstream forced velocity perturbations, incorporating reduced chemistry mechanisms. Two incompressible solvers, each employing different numbers of reduced chemistry mechanism steps, are used to simulate the turbulent reacting flowfield to predict the flame describing functions. The predictions differ slightly between reduced chemistry approximations, indicating the need for more involved chemistry. These are then incorporated into a low order thermoacoustic solver to predict thermoacoustic modes. For the combustor operating at two different pressures, most thermoacoustic modes are predicted to be stable, in agreement with the experiments. The predicted modal frequencies are in good agreement with the measurements, although some mismatches in the predicted modal growth rates and hence modal stabilities are observed. Overall, these findings lend confidence in this coupled approach for real industrial gas turbine combustors.

The three-dimensional coupled explicit Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and the two equation shear-stress transport k-w (SST k-w) model has been employed to numerically simulate the cold flow field in a special-shaped cavity-based supersonic combustor. In a cross-section shaped rectangular, hypersonic inlet with airflow at Mach 2.0 chamber, shock structures and flow characteristics of a herringbone-shaped boss and a herringbone-shaped cavity models were discussed, respectively. The results indicate: Firstly, according to the similarities of bevel-cutting shock characteristics between the boss case and the cavity case, the boss structure can serve as an ideal alternative model for shear-layer. Secondly, the eddies within cavity are composed of herringbone-spanwise vortexes, columnar vortices in the front and main-spanwise vortexes in the rear, featuring tilting, twisting and stretching. Thirdly, the simulated bottom-flow of cavity is in good agreement with experimental result, while the reverse flow-entrainment resulting from herringbone geometry and pressure gradient. However, the herringbone-shaped cavity has a better performance in fuel-mixing.

In this study, the fully-coupled and fully-dynamic Biot governing equations in the open-source geotechFoam solver are extended to account for pore fluid viscous stresses. Additionally, turbulent pore fluid flow in deformable porous media is modeled by means of the conventional eddy viscosity concept without the need to resolve all turbulence scales. A new approach is presented to account for porous media resistance to flow (solid-to-fluid coupling) by means of an effective viscosity, which accounts for tortuosity, grain shape and local turbulences induced by flow through porous media. The new model is compared to an implemented extended Darcy-Forchheimer model in the Navier-Stokes equations, which accounts for laminar, transitional, turbulent and transient flow regimes. Further, to account for skeleton deformation, the porosity and other model parameters are updated with regard to strain of geomaterials. The presented model is calibrated by means of available results of physical experiments of unidirectional and oscillatory flows.

An experimental investigation is carried out on modeling of fuel atomization for the purpose of simulating the idle regime of a gas turbine combustor through atmospheric testing. If the simulation is successfully applied, it will significantly reduce the cost of testing. The simulation must sustain nearly the same fuel spray characteristics and the same aerodynamics at the exit of the frontal device. Air assisting through the main stage of a dual orifice fuel nozzle is employed to match the fuel spray characteristics. Optical diagnostic methods including flow visualization and Adaptive Phase/Doppler Velocimetry are used for the investigation of spray characteristics. Once the fuel spray characteristics are matched by air assisting, the combustor characteristics may then be matched by maintaining the loading parameter constant. The possibility of modeling with air assisting is shown and appropriate conditions for air assisting are found.

Abstract Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results are presented for synthetic turbulence generation by a proposed statistically targeted forcing (STF) method. The new method seeks to introduce a fluctuating velocity field with a distribution of first and second moments that match a user-specified target mean velocity and Reynolds stress tensor, by incorporating deterministic time-dependent forcing terms into the momentum equation for the resolved flow. The STF method is formulated to extend the applicability of previously documented methods and provide flexibility in regions where synthetic turbulence needs to be generated or damped, for use in engineering level large-eddy and hybrid large-eddy/Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes CFD simulations. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the proposed STF method in LES simulations of isotropic and anisotropic homogeneous turbulent flow test cases. Results are interrogated and compared to target statistical velocity and turbulent stress distributions and evaluated in terms of energy spectra. Analysis of the influence of STF model parameters, mesh resolution, and LES subgrid stress model on the results is investigated. Results show that the new method can successfully reproduce desired statistical distributions in a homogeneous turbulent flow.

This paper proposes an approach to develop building dynamic thermal models that are of paramount importance for controller application. In this context, controller requires a low-order, computationally efficient, and accurate models to achieve higher performance. An efficient building model is developed by having proper structural knowledge of low-order model and identifying its parameter values. Simplified low-order systems can be developed using thermal network models using thermal resistances and capacitances. In order to determine the low-order model parameter values, a specific approach is proposed using a stochastic particle swarm optimization. This method provides a significant approximation of the parameters when compared to the reference model whilst allowing low-order model to achieve 40% to 50% computational efficiency than the reference one. Additionally, extensive simulations are carried to evaluate the proposed simplified model with solar radiation and identified model parameters. The developed simplified model is afterward validated with real data from a case study building where the achieved results clearly show a high degree of accuracy compared to the actual data.

In this paper, a low-order model for predicting performance of radial turbocharger turbines is presented. The model combines an unsteady quasi-three-dimensional (Q3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method with multiple one-dimensional (1D) meanline impeller solvers. The new model preserves the critical volute geometry features, which is crucial for the accurate prediction of the wave dynamics and retains effects of the rotor inlet circumferential nonuniformity. It also still maintains the desirable properties of being easy to set-up and fast to run. The model has been validated against a experimentally validated full 3D unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) solver. The loss model in the meanline model is calibrated by the full 3D RANS solver under the steady flow states. The unsteady turbine performance under different inlet pulsating flow conditions predicted by the model was compared with the results of the full 3D URANS solver. Good agreement between the two was obtained with a speed-up ratio of about 4 orders of magnitude (∼104) for the low-order model. The low-order model was then used to investigate the effect of different pulse wave amplitudes and frequencies on the turbine cycle averaged performance. For the cases tested, it was found that compared with quasi-steady performance, the unsteady effect of the pulsating flow has a relatively small impact on the cycle-averaged turbine power output and the cycle-averaged mass flow capacity, while it has a large influence on the cycle-averaged ideal power output and cycle-averaged efficiency. This is related to the wave dynamics inside the volute, and the detailed mechanisms responsible are discussed in this paper.

A method of coupling a low-Reynolds-number k–ε RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) model with Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) in a two-layer Hybrid LES/RANS (HLR) scheme is proposed in the present work. The RANS model covers the near-wall region and the LES model the remainder of the flow domain. Two different subgrid-scale (SGS) models in LES were considered, the Smagorinsky model and the one-equation model for the residual kinetic energy (Yoshizawa and Horiuti, 1985), combined with two versions of the RANS ε equation, one governing the “isotropic” (ε˜; Chien, 1982) and the other the “homogeneous” dissipation rate (εh; Jakirlic and Hanjalic, 2002). Both fixed and self-adjusting interface locations were considered. The exchange of the variables across the interface was adjusted by smoothing the turbulence viscosity either by adjusting the RANS model parameters, such as Cμ (Temmerman et al., 2005), or by applying an additional forcing at the interface using a method of digital-filter-based generation of inflow data for spatially developing DNS and LES due to Klein et al. (2003). The feasibility of the method was illustrated against the available DNS, fine- and coarse grid LES, DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) and experiments in turbulent flow over a backward-facing step at a low (Yoshioka et al., 2001) and a high Re number (Vogel and Eaton, 1985), periodic flow over a series of 2-D hills (Fro¨hlich et al., 2005) and in a high-Re flow over a 2-D, wall-mounted hump (Greenblat et al, 2004). Prior to these computations, the method was validated in a fully-developed channel flow at a moderate Reynolds number Rem ≈ 24000 (Abe et al., 2004).
