Large and small safety accidents caused by experiments frequently occur in laboratories, and preventive measures are very important to prevent human, physical, and research and development (R&D) losses. It is very important to maximize R&D performance and to produce excellent R&D results through the efficient and optimal operation of laboratories, which can be done through R&D laboratory safety management activities. Research managers worldwide are obliged to engage in research activities with equal emphasis on good R&D performance and R&D laboratory safety management activities. In this article, the strategic R&D laboratory safety management status in South Korea was studied. Toward this end, an analytic hierarchy process analysis was conducted, and the degrees of importance and priority levels of the established factors affecting laboratory safety management, and their subfactors were analyzed based on a 5-point scale. Finally, a strategic management system for R&D laboratory safety was proposed.

In recent years, under the background of the country’s vigorous development of science and education, the construction of university laboratories has been continuously progressing and perfecting. Under such rapid development, the safety management mode of university laboratories has been lagging behind and many safety accidents have occurred threatening teachers and students. The safety of university laboratories urgently needs more attention. This research briefly analyzes the safety management system of domestic and foreign university laboratories and related laws, regulations and standards and analyzes the types and characteristics of accidents and the causes of accidents through statistics of 50 college laboratory accidents in recent years. Based on the analytic hierarchy process to study the weight of the cause of the accident. It is concluded that laboratory safety management and personnel management are the main reasons for the accident.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) published the Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Risk Management in 2017 to strengthen cybersecurity in consideration of digitalized ships. As part of these guidelines, the IMO recommends that each flag state should integrate and manage matters regarding cyber risk in the ship safety management system (SMS) according to the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) before the first annual verification that takes place on or after 1 January 2021. The purpose of this paper is to identify cybersecurity risk components in the maritime sector that should be managed by the SMS in 2021 and to derive priorities for vulnerability improvement plans through itemized risk assessment. To this end, qualitative risk assessment (RA) was carried out for administrative, technical, and physical security risk components based on industry and international standards, which were additionally presented in the IMO guidelines. Based on the risk matrix from the RA analysis results, a survey on improving cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the maritime sector was conducted, and the analytic hierarchy process was used to analyze the results and derive improvement plan priority measures.

From January 2020, the International Maritime Organization has regulated ship emissions to reduce sulfur content. As an alternative to this, LNG bunkering was proposed, and infrastructure and ships were deployed. Therefore, we used analytic hierarchy process AHP techniques to determine optimal methods of LNG bunkering for shipyard safety. First, we conducted a literature survey on the concept and type of LNG bunkering, global LNG bunkering trends, and features of Japan and South Korea cases and compared them. Thereafter, an expert survey was conducted, and survey data was analyzed using AHP techniques. Finally, we derived optimal methods applicable to shipyard industry. The analytical results revealed that the derived priority of the optimal LNG bunkering method of shipyard was in the order of the STS method, TTS method, and the PTS method. The result of this study can serve as a theoretical basis to make LNG bunkering safer and more economical in shipyards to prepare for the expansion of demand of LNG-fueled ships and LNG. However, this study inevitably has limitations of ranking reversals paradox as it was conducted by experts, assuming no weights to STS, TTS, or PTS.

It is imperative to develop a methodology to identify river impairment sources, particularly the relative impact of socioeconomic sources, to enhance the efficiency of various river restoration schemes and policies and to have an internal diagnosis system in place. This study, therefore, aims to identify and analyze the relative importance of the socioeconomic factors affecting river ecosystem impairment in South Korea. To achieve this goal, we applied the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate expert judgement of the relative importance of different socioeconomic factors influencing river ecosystem impairment. Based on a list of socioeconomic factors influencing stream health, an AHP questionnaire was prepared and administered to experts in aquatic ecology. Our analysis reveals that secondary industries form the most significant source of stream ecosystem impairment. Moreover, the most critical socioeconomic factors affecting stream impairment are direct inflow pollution, policy implementation, and industrial wastewater. The results also suggest that the AHP is a rapid and robust approach to assessing the relative importance of different socioeconomic factors that affect river ecosystem health. The results can be used to assist decision makers in focusing on actions to improve river ecosystem health.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the safety of ship berthing operations in port. Based on the features of ship's berthing operations and relevant literature, the Safety Factors (SFs) of ship berthing at docks are first investigated. A Safety Index (SI) with a Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model is then proposed to assess those SFs from port marine pilots, by which port managers and ship carriers may make policies to improve ship berthing safety. To validate the model, berthing operations at Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan were empirically investigated. The results indicate the main safety factors affecting ship berthing at port docks are: working concentration, the condition of mooring lines, emergency response, port policy of improving business and berth length. Based on those results, the theoretical and managerial implications for ship berthing safety at dock are finally discussed.

Urban underground logistics system is a newly emerging concept, and there is no molded sample project to provide reference information. So there exists much uncertainty in its development, and such uncertainty will have some impact on overall development of the system. In this paper, gray analytic hierarchy process analysis will be used to evaluate the risk factors in the development of urban underground logistics system. And then, we use the empirical analysis to quantify the risk of the development of urban underground logistics and provide references for the development of urban underground logistics system.

Long-term care hospitals for the elderly are places for the elderly and patients with impaired mobility to live in, but these places face a high risk of great damage in the event of a fire. The standards for fire safety at long-term care hospitals for the elderly are limited to inspection of firefighting facilities and training plans, with no index to evaluate the evacuation plans, facilities for evacuation in case of fire, and the fire response manuals of long-term care hospitals for the elderly. Therefore, this study tries to carry out a basic analysis and establish fire safety evaluation indices for long-term care hospitals for the elderly. To that end, the study derives the importance and priorities of the indices related to fire safety in long-term care hospitals for the elderly through an analytic hierarchy process questionnaire surveying 44 firefighting experts. Finally, considering the importance and priorities of the indices, this study presents fire safety evaluation standards (drafts) for long-term care hospitals for the elderly.
