AbstractThis paper investigates the linkage of returns and volatilities between the United States and Chinese stock markets from January 2010 to March 2020. We use the dynamic conditional correlation (DCC) and asymmetric Baba–Engle–Kraft–Kroner (BEKK) GARCH models to calculate the time-varying correlations of these two markets and examine the return and volatility spillover effects between these two markets. The empirical results show that there are only unidirectional return spillovers from the U.S. stock market to the Chinese stock market. The U.S. stock market has a consistently positive spillover to China’s next day’s morning trading, but its impact on China’s next day’s afternoon trading appears to be insignificant. This finding implies that information in the U.S. stock market impacts the performance of the Chinese stock market differently in distinct semi-day trading. Moreover, with respect to the volatility, there are significant bidirectional spillover effects between these two markets.

This paper provides a detailed analysis of the difference between the Chinese stock market and the U.S. stock market under the development of financial technology. In conclusion, we find that the Chinese stock market is more dominated by retail investors, but the United States owns more stocks, mostly held by institutional investors, and has a better financial mindset. The behavior of investors in the Chinese stock market is mainly the excessive speculation of investors in the Chinese market. This is one of the reasons for the many fluctuations in the Chinese stock market. Due to the speculative nature of China’s stock market, the floating ratio reflects the management mechanism of China’s stock market and helps to observe the correlation with the U.S. stock market. And technology and digitalization affect the trading of the stock market. This research is correlational, and there is no causality implied.

PurposeThis study aims to examine the long memory as well as the effect of structural breaks in the US and the Chinese stock markets. More importantly, it further explores possible causes of the differences in long memory between these two stock markets.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employ various methods to estimate the memory parameters, including the modified R/S, averaged periodogram, Lagrange multiplier, local Whittle and exact local Whittle estimations.FindingsChina's two stock markets exhibit long memory, whereas the two US markets do not. Furthermore, long memory is robust in Chinese markets even when we test break-adjusted data. The Chinese stock market does not meet the efficient market hypothesis (EMHs), including the efficiency of information disclosure, regulations and supervision, investors' behavior, and trading mechanisms. Therefore, its stock prices' sluggish response to information leads to momentum effects and long memory.Originality/valueThe authors elaborately illustrate how long memory develops by analyzing not only stock market indices but also typical individual stocks in both the emerging China and the developed US, which diversifies the EMH with wider international stylized facts and findings when compared with previous literature. A couple of tests conducted to analyze structural break effects and spurious long memory demonstrate the reliability of the results. The authors’ findings have significant implications for investors and policymakers worldwide.

To assess the spillover effects of quantitative easing (QE) on return and volatility from the U.S. market to the selected Asian markets, this study applies dynamic correlation coefficient-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model to capture the time-varying nature of return and volatility spillovers during non-QE and QE periods of the sample countries. Furthermore, we incorporate the estimated time-varying correlation coefficients and country-specific factors to probe the determinants of the spillover. We find that the U.S. QE policies have significantly affected the correlations between the U.S. and some Asian countries, to which it performs significantly progressive decline in the correlations during the latest QE. Greater stock market liquidity remarkably increases their financial spillovers.

Based on the daily return and volatility series of the Chinese yuan (RMB)/US dollar (USD) exchange rate and the Shanghai Stock Composite Index, the time-varying long memories of the Chinese currency and stock markets are investigated by comprehensively using the rescaled range (R/S), the modified R/S, and the detrended fluctuation analysis methods. According to the results drawn: (1) the efficiency of the Chinese currency market has not improved significantly, whereas the efficiency of the Chinese stock market has improved steadily, (2) volatility series presents longer memory than return series either in the Chinese currency or stock market and (3) the time-varying Hurst exponent of the Chinese currency market is sensitive to the reform that enhances the flexibility of the RMB exchange rate. Moreover, we find that short-term bidirectional Granger causal relationship exists, but no long-run equilibrium relationship between the time-varying Hurst exponents of the Chinese currency and stock markets was found based on the Granger causality and cointegration tests, respectively.

We study how U.S. banks' exposure to the economic fallout due to governments' response to Covid-19 in foreign countries has affected their credit provision to borrowers in the United States. We combine a rarely accessed dataset on U.S. banks' cross-border exposure to borrowers in foreign countries with the most detailed regulatory ("credit registry") data that is available on their U.S.-based lending. We compare the change in the U.S. lending of banks that are more vs. less exposed to the pandemic abroad, during and after the onset of Covid-19 in 2020. We document strong spillover effects: U.S. banks with higher foreign exposures in badly "Covid-19-hit" regions cut their lending in the United States substantially more. This effect is particularly strong for longer-maturity loans and term loans and is robust to controlling for firms’ pandemic exposure.

The subprime mortgage crisis in the United States (U.S.) in mid-2008 suggests that stock prices volatility do spillover from one market to another after international stock markets downturn. The purpose of this paper is to examine the magnitude of return and volatility spillovers from developed markets (the U.S. and Japan) to eight emerging equity markets (India, China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand) and Vietnam. Employing a mean and volatility spillover model that deals with the U.S. and Japan shocks and day effects as exogenous variables in ARMA(1,1), GARCH(1,1) for Asian emerging markets, the study finds some interesting findings. Firstly, the day effect is present on six out of nine studied markets, except for the Indian, Taiwanese and Philippine. Secondly, the results of return spillover confirm significant spillover effects across the markets with different magnitudes. Specifically, the U.S. exerts a stronger influence on the Malaysian, Philippine and Vietnamese market compared with Japan. In contrast, Japan has a higher spillover effect on the Chinese, Indian, Korea, and Thailand than the U.S. For the Indonesian market, the return effect is equal. Finally, there is no evidence of a volatility effect of the U.S. and Japanese markets on the Asian emerging markets in this study.
